That's why you can hear some microphone adjustments and playing with the level settings at the beginning. For those who were going by the schedule on the ProgDay web page and were expecting the first band of Sunday to be Us, Today...there was a change of plans. The drummer for the band Farmhouse Odyssey couldn't make it to the show (much to the disappointment of the rest of the band who were there and ready to play), so the ProgDay organizers made some quick calls and got Marbin, who had played the Thursday night ProgDay preshow and were still in North Carolina, to drive from Charlotte to Chapel Hill to play the first slot at ProgDay before driving to Asheville for a Sunday night gig. As guitarist Dani Rabin put it, "If you need a last-minute fusion band, we'll chopper in". Those who have seen or heard ProgDay 2015 might remember these guys as a kick-ass instrumental fusion band led by guitar and saxophone. They still are, but if anything the intervening years on the road have only sharped them up further and given them a nearly telepathic ability to play unison lines. On my first attempt to torrent this recording, I rolled too much low end off and ended up with a very tinny sounding recording with weak guitar and squeaky sax. So I started over from scratch and left much more bass in. I may have gone a tad too far in the opposite direction, but to my ears the end result sounds much better. I tried to amplify Dani's "storytimes" as much as I could without letting them get overwhelmed by hiss. He's a very entertaining guy. If he weren't such a great guitarist, he could go into stand-up comedy. If anyone can figure out what that fifth song's title is, I'd love to be able to fill in that hole in the setlist. It might be a continuation of The World of Computers or it might be another new song, but it sounded familiar. I skimmed through all the band's albums and couldn't find anything that was an obvious match, but I might have missed something. Marbin on the web: http://www.marbinmusic.com/ https://marbinmusic.bandcamp.com/ https://www.facebook.com/marbinmusic/ About ProgDay: ProgDay is an outdoor festival of progressive rock that has been held annually since 1995. In 1996 it was expanded from one day to two and has been featuring anywhere from eight to eleven progressive rock bands each year since, with a few more bands usually hosting related Thursday, Friday or Saturday night events at nearby venues. It's definitely worth the trip if you're a prog fan and don't mind a little heat and humidity and a little driving around. I first went in 1997 and had such a great time that I've been back every year since. The main event takes place at beautiful Storybook Farm, unless rain forces it indoors (which has fortunately only happened a couple times in the festival's history). It's a relaxed atmosphere, where you can listen and watch from anywhere you want - if you really like a particular band, you can sit right up against the stage (if you get there early enough to claim the space). Some people listen to the bands while shopping for CDs and merchandise in the vendor tent or getting food in the pavilion or playing frisbee in the field behind the audience or just sharing a beer or two with friends. The people are friendly, and the band members often hang out all weekend taking in the show, selling merchandise and chatting with fans when they're not on stage. If you're a prog rock fan and can possibly attend, make every effort to attend. If you'd like to make a donation via PayPal to help keep the festival afloat (and ensure more of these ProgDay torrents in the future), please visit: http://www.progday.net/ProgDay-Support.html |
