While not an exceptional recording by any means, this is surely some great early Phish captured on tape. Despite the distant sound, the overall sound of the tape was quite good considering the age. While the source info is not "nailed", below is the email that led me to the tape:
An etree friend has come across a cassette that he believes to be from this show.
If in fact this show is from this date, it would definitely be the first Wilson and Golgi known (supplanting the current first known for those 2 which is 10/15/1986). My friend has actually not listened to this show, but he lives in San Diego and got it from a guy he works with who was at Goddard College in 1986 (kind of an odd coincidence I would say) since his coworker approached him knowing my friend was into Phish.
Rather than paraphrase everything told to me, here is exactly what my friend told me about this tape/show:
Tom [his coworker] told me he wasn't sure of the exact date, but that he did go to the show. He said that it was in a barn. Actually, he said when he went there opened up the wrong door and was on or near the stage and was looking at the whole crowd staring back at him before he went around to the entrance. Anyway, he tells me that it was in October 1986 at Goddard College so I can only assume it is the October 12,1986 Haybarn Theater, Goddard College, Plainfield, VT show. Tom got it from
Del Martin and the only information that I have is that Del gave him a copy of the tape (which was taped off of Del's recording). I have a copy of Tom's tape. Tom said he is pretty sure that Del had a 4-track and was recording with 2 mics. Other than that I don't know any other info except a setlist or partial setlist he gave me which is: Golgi-(first time?)> Slave to the Traffic Light, Wilson (first time?), Haley's Comet w/ Nancy, Possum, Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley, Makisupa Policeman. Since I don't have a good tape player and I don't want to jack it up by listening to it. Can you or do you know anybody that can put it in flac or shn format for digital transfer? I really don't want to get hopes up too high because I haven't listened to it, but I think that it should be okay. I didn't ask what type of precautions he took with this tape over the last 20 years.
ENJOY!

Notes: This is all that is known to circulate/exist of this show.
The quality is pretty decent for 1988, and the crowd is
really chatty at times! It's interesting to listen to Nectars
fill up as the show goes on. This is definately Set I and II
of probably a 3 set show (as most of the Nectar's gigs were)
as Trey announces a set break after The Lizards.
Enjoy! |

Notes:
-The original seed for this show had sets 1 and 2 switched. This seed fixes that problem in addition to the tracks at the end of set 2 that were graciously provided to me by John. For some reason, none of the Cass/1 sources contain those d2t06-d2t08.
-This version includes replaced d1t03
Replacement track provided by Jeff Ishaq...thanks!
Fixes:
-Removed dropout in d1t08 2:55 (0.030s)
-Applied -90 cents pitch shift in SF 4.5 to d2t06-d2t08 to compensate for the increased analog generations. I matched the track times between the previous seed and this seed for the rest of Set 2 to achieve this value. |

**NOTES**
There was a tape flip between Lizards and A-Train...the start of A-Train was cut, so the files were crossfaded. There is a short pause at the start of The Lizards. The levels were adjusted by using the L3 MultiMaximizer and to also limit sub-bands to squeeze the most db's out of the recording without introducing distortion. |

*Editing Notes*
1) Tried to "adjust" the weirdness in the levels. Unfortunately, about the first 3 seconds of the song were unusable due to the levels and channel dropouts. I tried to smooth them out as best as possible...This does result in some hiss becomming very prevelant.
2) Crossfaded the tape flip....you probably won't even notice it because I did it to the meter of the song.
3) Adjusted the levels to make them a little more even (sometimes this does result in some hiss, but hey it was worth it).
3a) You won't hardly notice the tape flip that happens here.
4) Levels do rise here, and there is a short fade, but they were also raised in relation to all material in the mastering stage (not normalized).
5) The start of this song is completely "gone". the levels are so distorted that when brought into CD mastering levels, it is at levels that can damage speakers from the overload.....I just did a real fast fade to try and lessen the possiblity of damaging speakers from the level adjustment made at the board. The rest of the volume fluctuations are how they were....blame Paul ;-)

* the vocal jam is based upon the Led Zepplin song "The Ocean" from the album Houses of the Holy

Show Notes: Rocky Top through Antelope featured the Reverend Jeff Mosier on banjo; Antelope also featured Oteil Burbridge on bass. This show features one of the most humorous moments ever caught on tape! It started when the crowd chanted for Fee as Fishman took the stage during HYHU. Fish sounded perplexed, and remarked that he doesn't sing Fee, but Trey and Page started the song up anyway and left Fishman on the spot. He tried his best and got through the first verse before falling apart during the chorus.
*note*
There is some distortion on the set...it starts durring the fishman part and continues to the end. I lowered the volume to lessen the crackle, but it's still distorted. This is pretty much for historical purposes only...and it is pretty darn funny to boot!

The first set has some distortion because of the levels being too loud. There was no way to correct this or else I would have.
Most setlists have Donna Lee as the second song, it's not....
I faded the end of the seond set before the encore as there was a pause. There was no music lost.

# Same take as track 11 on disc 1 but poorer quality.
From the Pharmer's Almanac Vol. 6:
"Recorded in the summer of 1990 at Wendell Studios in Boston, MA. The band entered the studio soon after
the June 16, 1990 Townshend Family Park show, but elected not to release any of the recorded material.
Tapes of the sessions circulate lightly among fansl the first tape is more difficult to track down than
the second"
A note from Wayne:
"Props must be given to Pete Gershon of Burlington VT, from whom I got the first session from.
He's unsure of the actual linage - thinks it's SBD > cass/2 > CDR
The first disc is very clean.
The 2nd disc is the same thing that currently curculates.
Enjoy the complete session."
Much thanks to Sarah and Wayne for the discs!
Enjoy the music. Peace~ Bill DiPalma (DiPalma81@comcast.net) |

Sbd/Aud mixes: The following shows were recorded to DAT from a separate recording board at the shows. They are some of the highest
quality Phish tapes in existence: 4/22/90, 10/30/90, 10/31/90, 11/2/90, 11/3/90, 11/4/90, 3/13/91, 3/15/91, 3/16/91, 3/17/91, 3/22/91,

(not EQ) and mixed completely separately from the board mix, rumoredly done in a truck outside the venue. The engineer used 2 audience
mics to mix in crowd/hall ambience (on most of them).

$ w/ Carl "Gears" Gearhard
* Power Outage during Chalkdust Torture. John turned the deck off briefly.
When the tape deck comes back on, Page, Fishman and Carl Gearhard jam...
Jam includes portions of the Spiderman TV theme song (killer!). When the
power comes back, Trey and Mike join in and finish the Jam.
notes from Weave:
I remember the tapers using their pen lights to light the guys on the
stage during this jam. John was taping from just in front of the soundboard.
Unfortunately, the air conditioning did not come back on the rest of the
night. It was litterally the hottest show I was at. It was an unusually warm
spring day, so it was miserably hot and sticky inside the Campus Club. By
the end of the show we were all drenched in sweat! (That's why Trey makes
mention of the A/C problem at the end of A-Train).
TMWSIY is introduced as "the old man who stepped into yesterday" for Page, on his birthday.

Shockra opened. With The Giant Country Horns.
The bouncers/security at The Casino Ballroom are assholes. The worst I have ever seen. The taper and I (weave) were on the guest list for this show. The bouncers at the door insisted we were not on the list. We had to find someone with a ticket to go inside and find John Paluska. Eventually, Paluska came to the door and we got in.
The Casino Ballroom has a policy that everyone must sit down at their table for all shows. And they enforce it with their steroid-crazed bouncers. You can hear them yelling for people to sit down early in the 1st set. More than 1 person got tossed out for standing/dancing. They had a small dance floor to the side of the stage. That was the only place were you could dance. The Casino Ballroom sucks.

There was a tape flip in YEM that was edited out smoothly. After the flip however, the tape changes azimuth and the results are audible. I decided to not re-transfer this as it would have resulted in doing multiple edits to splice all the corrected pieces together. There is also another tape flip that resulted in splitting this into 3 discs (between the end of Bowie and the start of A-Train) because of the sudden end of Bowie and the loss of music on A-Train.

When they went to play 'Possum, someone threw a bottle onstage prompting the band to play the

Notes: The "?" in the lineage is not an extra analog generation. I'm just not
sure if the PCM came from a DAT or not, thus I put the question mark in. I
transferred the PCM, removed the DC offset, converted from 44.056Khz to
44.1Khz at the highest quality setting, tracked, and burned this show on
July 30, 2003. I wonder if perhaps the master was recorded with Dolby on and
played back with it off. It seems a bit too bright to me. However, I did
not mess with the recording in any way. Enjoy!
* - There is a very small dropout at 2:10. I tried several times to get a
clean read off the PCM tape at that spot, but could not. It's hardly
noticable, though.
^ - Has a vocal jam based on "Hawaii" and a "Lullabye" tease in it.
^^ - "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" tease to start

***RE-MASTERING NOTES 8/2003***
This show almost certainly has the pre-emphisis enabled if this a *true* PCM recording. That is the most likely cause for the overly harsh sound of the show. Upon getting these SHN's, they were loaded into REBA and passed through a 20band Parametric EQ with the J17 de-emphisis setting. Next in store for this show was a pass through the BBE Sonic Maximizer. This was used to really bring the mix together....it really brought out the low end very well. You can actually hear Mike's bass now ;-) The reason this was done is because if you listen real closely, you may notice you hear a lot of room dynamics....the recording had a slight time smear problem because of the 2 sources used to record this. The BBE unit was used to correct for this. Yes, you heard me right...I think this is a matrix, SBD+AUD. The SOAM has some nasty feedback. I crossfaded the feedback to "lessen" the damage to our ears. The pops in Fluffhead were toned down somewhat, but I had to leave BBFCFM alone....most of the distortion you hear is not dropouts but rather mic overload.
The show was re-mastered, re-tracked, then shn'd in August 2003.

both sides. I seamlessly edited these using Soundforge 4.5

*** This is an excellent sounding show, the source given to me was SBD>Cass/0>DAT,
I am not sure if this is a SBD or just an excellent AUD recording, I could make up
my mind so I posted the sorce that was given, any opinions are welcome.
To me it sounds like an excellent AUD ***
* Comments from http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=20165
10/23/2003 Mr. Marmar This is most definately NOT a SBD. This sounds more like a FOB or a recording from the OTS.....The clarity is not there as in SBD's from this era....Also, there is too much of an "auditorium" quality to Mike's low-end notes. Not to mention that you can REALLY hear the drums reverb in the room.
10/23/2003 Alec I am going to have to agree with you Mr. Marmar, I struggled with this for a long time, but you bring up some good points.

~Mastering~
24/48 wav loaded into a montage for each set for reconstructing each set > each unprocessed 24/48 wav was then opened as a stereo wav to perform the following processes: BBE 1/4/0 > R-Bass @ 32Hz +5db > Waves C4 Multiband Compressor > Waves L1 for make-up gain > Waves X-Noise > 192kHz resampler to 44.1 > Waves L1+ for final gain adjustments and dithering to 16bit via Mode 1/Normal/Digital > FLAC 16bit
*NOTES*
This show speaks for itself. After having the FOB source for so long, I was suprised that this show surfaced as a SBD. Amazing jams all nite long. There is a cut near the end of Fluffhead that could not be fixed. There also appears to be a sopt of stretched tape durring Possum, but it is short lived. Whoever taped this off the DAT did it correctly by leaving some overlaps on the flips....this made it a snap to put back together seamlessly.

*** - Dedicated to Sarah who was taking care of Marley because he was "too old and fat to come on tour anymore."
**** - Spliced in from a master cassette audience source.
I received this show as thanks from Kevin Shapiro for filling a void in the Phish archives, Wetlands 6/9/90 that many of you have been enjoying.
It appears that there was an analog deck in the beginning of this chain since there are short drop-outs (due to tape flips) at the end of I Didn't Know
and in the middle of YEM. There is no hiss whatsoever on this source, so it definitely was recorded to a digital media.
Kevin used the master cassette audience source to smooth out the transition between Divided Sky and I Didn't Know.
I fused together the cut in YEM using Sound Forge 6.0 at 12:07. Kevin also supplied the fillers which sound like MCS or CS1 sources.
A HUGE THANK YOU to Kevin Shapiro for hooking me up with my first show : )

Show Notes: Crimes featured the Dude of Life on vocals. Antelope included Brady Bunch theme teases and a Simpsons Signal, while It's Ice featured Random Note, All Fall Down, and Oom Pa Pa Signals. Amazing Grace was performed without microphones. Also, while several versions of YEM have teased Oye Como Va, this version featured an all-out jam of the song. Contact segued out of the YEM vocal jam. During Daniel, the band introduced and thanked each member of the crew.
**Mastering Notes**
The DAT was running flat. This was corrected in wavelab using the Time Stretch feature of the Audio Montage with http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=1472 used as the tuning reference. That same source was used to patch the cassette flips after Fluffhead, the end of the Big Ball Jam, and the encores.

***Part of a operatic aria, with Andrea Baker (San Franciso Opera) singing (no mic).
#Boxes of macaroni and cheese are passed out before "Possum", which the crowd uses to play
along during "Possum" and "Fire". Fish encourages the crowd to, "Shake your macaroni!"

Phish or Trey Anastasio or Trey and Tom Marshall or Bivouac???
4 track recording
circa early 1980's
1. Dear Mrs. Reagen 2:00
This is one of the more obscure items I have had in my collection. It was a filler on a tape I got from a Vermonter in the early to mid 1990's. Maybe it was the White Tape, or Bivouac Jaun, I'm not sure. I used to look for old and rare recordings back then. Back when rare meant rare and you hand wrote tapes lists to send via snail mail. Some of you might not know that music was traded on cassettes back then ;) I have never seen any info about this nor have I stumbled onto anyone else who has this little gem. I decided to put it online for a couple reasons. I figured some people might enjoy it for one. More inportantly I was hoping to find an upgrade or prompt others to post some gems that are as rare as this. Some of you might not have even ever heard this tune, or heard of it. It was played very little in the very beginnings of Phishs career. This must be a four track home recording. I also know there were different version recorded of the same song.
So if you have any info PLEASE hit me up at cleantone hotmail com to let me know. Keven? I would also appreciate an upgrade, or maybe share some other very rare recordings with me. Thanks in advance and enjoy! |

9. Weekapaug Groove
Show date is not correct, actually this was released in June of 1987. It was a demo recording shopped around to Burlington bars, in hopes of scoring gigs. Part of this were proper studio recordings included on Junta (and omitted here) The rest were undated live tracks: Wilson, Alumni Blues, Lizards, The Sloth, and a STUDIO version of Mikes > H2 > Weekapaug, that is a Junta outtake.
Very rare, and very cool. |

8.Tweezer Reprise
Show Notes: The highlight of this show was a massive, long (over 50 minutes!),
jammed out Tweezer that included a brief Gypsy Queen jam, an Also Sprach tease,
a Slave-like jam, and a Digital Delay Loop Jam with whistling. Simple was performed
with an a cappella ending instead of a jam, akin to the ALO version from December 8, 1994.
Amazing Grace was performed without microphones. Listen for a Stairway to Heaven tease at
the start of the first set.
Tech Notes: Fades were added in soundforge 6.0 . I used a really quick fade at the beginning
of set II because the music cut in immediately on my dat and I wanted to preserve as much as possible.
There was also crowd noise missing between the second set and encore on my dat so I left it as is.
Amazing Grace is performed without amplification so it is barely audible on the DAT. |

Show Notes: In a Halloween tease responding to Michael Jackson predictions, the band teased Black or White before GTBT and Beat It before Hood and in Suzy Greenberg. Suzy also included a Tweezer Reprise tease.
Tech notes: I extracted the cds as a range and resplit the tracks using CDWAV. The EAC logs for each disc are included. Some minor static is present during the chess move (d2t1). I applied fades at the beginning and end of each set and the encore using soundforge 4.5. Some of the crowd noise has been edited out between the second set and encore. For this reason, I added a fade to make the switch less abrubt. |

Phish opened for Santana.
* the song fades in...not much of the beginning chords are lost. There are also some adjustments/rumble as the taper gets situated.
** there is a cut in the middle at 00:47:10.23 > 00:47:11.67 ...durring the WUDMTF part...this could not be repaired and was left as-is
^ this is where the distortion/dropouts get really bad....I did my best to edit them, but some are still audible
*NOTE*
This is not the best sounding show, but it is all we have and is being released for those who must have every show......There were numerous areas of dropouts/distortion in the entire show. I tried my best to remove all the really bad ones, but a few (minor) areas still remain.

Slave Source: FMSBD Broadcast -> DAT -> CD -> EAC
Transfer:
All work was done on "Reba" which is the name for my DAW. DAT's transfered by TASCAM DA-40 -> Behringer DDX3216 Digital Mixer -> MARK OF THE UNICORN 896 HDR -> Dual XENON @ 800mHz PC...and a whole buch of other stuff.
All Editing done in the digital domain using Steinberg Wavelab 4.0f, CubaseVST/32 5.1
**NOTES**
I previously seeded this show in 2000, and after reading some of the user comments I was compelled to do a re-seed of this show. After listening real carefully and comparing the SBD portion to 3 different FMSBD sources, I have concluded that the soundboard portion is "flat" or runs slower than the FM source. So, from the point where it changes in PYITE > Golgi & all of disc 3 I took tuning measurements and discovered the DSBD was flat by 20cents. The pitch correction was done in Wavelab using the highest quality settings possible. Then PYITE was missing the fist minute from the DAT I had due to the taper "patching in" to the SBD feed from the Pre-FM source. The missing portion of Suzie was also repaired using the DAUD DAT I got my hands on. All edits were performed AFTER the DC Offset was removed from all material. The Slave came from Morgan Bell, who was nice enough to send me the FM source to use. The levels of Slave had to be adjusted to match the DSBD material. The Slave was edited in using exacting methods I would rather not go into here...the main changes are level reduction, DC Offset removal, and slight dithering. So here it is...after 80+hrs of listening and relistening, the best source available for this show IMHO.

Show Notes: This "show" was an in-studio set before the Stuttgart show.
Between Talk and Waste, Trey noodled around to the tune of Michael
Jackson's Don't Stop Till You Get Enough. This was an extremely funny
interview with some great banter inbetween songs.
First 4 tracks are the songs alone pulled from the broadcast, followed
by the actual radio broadcast, thus the songs are presented twice. |

*Before they started the set, the crowd chanted the beginning of "Destiny Unbound"
(in hopes that the band would play it). Trey acknowledged the chant by saying that
he couldn't hear what was being sung; that it sounded like some kind of "death chant";
and asked if this was the point in the show where they do the human sacrifice.

Tech Notes
SHN/FLAC's decoded to wave and SF 6.0 was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch the SBD & AUD sources. This is a 60% AUD, 40% SBD mix.
- Mixed by dan@am-dig.com
- SHN conversion 12-DEC-2003 (1st)
- Remixed and SHN conversion 12-DEC-2004 (2nd)
- Artwork by dan@am-dig.com 300dpi - For best results
print at the highest resolution onto glossy photo paper.
Design for use with a clear slim double jewel case.
---------------------------------------------------------
Notes
In most situations I time correct the AUD source to match
the speed to the SBD source. In this situation the AUD was
off DAT and the SBD was off a cassette. I decided to use
the more time accurate source (DAT>AUD) and time corrected
the cassette SBD to match the speed on the AUD.
The SBD was recorder uneven; I decreased the levels 1db on
the right channel prior to mixdown. I reduced the levels on
the FOB by -3db prior to mixdown. This still resulted in a
60% AUD, 40% SBD mix.
SBD suffers from moderate distortion during PYITE, Ghost and
probably other spots. As a commentary note, this is not one of
the best SBD recordings. Not bad, not great. I would give this
B/B+ grade, for what that is worth. The FOB is very nice. A
real "in-your-face" recording with minimal crowd noise. This
is the primary reason for the 60%-AUD / 40%-SBD ratio in the
matrix mix. Whether you are a fan of AUD recordings or not I
suggest you check out the FOB.
02.294 missing on the SBD (cassette flip) btwn Maze and Dirt.
The FOB was trimmed 0:02.294 btwn 44:13.308 - 44:15.602 to
match. The result is smooth and most likely undetectable.
D2T5 The cassette flip on set two was reported as having
overlapping material. This was not the case. The joining
together or splicing out the cassette flip did result in an
inaudible splice but material was definitely missing. This
made for a bear of a project to synch to the FOB. Regardless,
the result is smooth and most likely undetectable.
D2T6 During the crowd cheer between the last song and the
encore you will hear commentary that "Mike Stanley is on the
stage". This is not referring to any special guest. We ran
several FOB's this tour and the aspect of actually becoming a
human mic stand night after night turned into the nickname
"Mike Stanley". |

I did the best I could with the names of the tracks
on disc one - since most of it is unreleased stuff -
I guessed on a few - feel free to submit corrections
if you may know the correct song titles.
This is the most complete, and most HQ version of
these sessions that I've yet heard, and felt they
deserved to be shared. Enjoy! |

$ With Kid Rock. Rumor had been strong that this was going to happen and Kid Rock
cruising in a golf cart in the lot forshadowed it. The relationship came about
when Trey and Kid Rock met at a post-Grammy party earlier this year.
# Aerosmith cover, first time played
## Sugarhill Gang cover, first time played. Trey on drums, Fishman briefly played
Trey's guitar and was rapping with Kid Rock. At the end Kid Rock yelled
"You want some rock n roll?!" and then went into the AC/DC classic
### AC/DC cover, second time played since its debut 4/20/89, Full Moon At The Zoo, Amherst College show
(after a fire alarm during Fluffhead, Phish came back onstage and debuted "You Shook Me" and then
segued back into the unfinished Fluffhead)
#### Grand Funk Railroad cover, second time played since its debut 11/16/96, 266 shows. |
