Indifference w/Eddie Vedder
notes: After performances by Neil Young (solo) and Jill Sobule, Ben Harper played a solo acoustic set to a packed house. Making his way on stage, he high-fived all the Bridge kids sitting behind him. Then he opened the set for the first time with "I Shall Not Walk Alone." Following "Burn One Down > My Own Two Hands", he switched his acoustic guitar with a lap slide guitar. Unfortunately his finger slide came up missing and he exclaimed, "This is what I get for not having my own crew with me!" A few moments later a replacement was found... He ended the 40-minute set with a stellar version of "The Woman in You"... Later during Pearl Jam's set, lead singer Eddie Vedder invited Ben to the stage. On his way out, Harper high-fived the band and carefully positioned his chair next to Vedder's. Anticipation grew heavy amongst the crowd. Like three years before at Madison Square Garden and earlier this year in Sydney, Eddie and Ben captivated the crowd as they traded verses on "Indifference."

*pearl Jam Set* Indifference
notes: On the second night of the Bridge School Benefit concert, Ben played "When She Believes" for only the second time ever live. After "Roses From My Friends", he turned around and played "Whipping Boy" to the Bridge kids sitting behind him. To close the set, his mother made a suprise appearance and joined him on the Dylan tune "Tomorrow Is a Long Time."
During Pearl Jam's set, Vedder again invited Ben on stage to help sing "Indifference." The tune landed on the band's annual fan club Christmas single.

rmd: A great sounding CD. The studio tracks are all excellent; The acetates are very good but sound like acetates. *The artwork, including an alternate picture from the Freewheelin' cover shoot, is excellent too. If you like this era, this is the best that's out on CD that I'm aware of. (Arnie Stodolsky)

($8.50 Admission). One mic was pointed at the PA (left or right)
and the other at the drums. Rango Keshavan took his master tapes and
put them onto DAT. Jim Wise took those DAT's and ran a
10dB noise reduction and gave the bass a boost @ 125Hz. He then sent
a CD set to Rango, who did the EAC and converted them to SHNs.

support act: The Meanies
set: Release, Last Exit, Spin the Black Circle, Tremor Christ, Corduroy, Not for You/Lukin, Animal, Glorified G, Daughter/(Stuff and Nonsense), State of Love and Trust, Why Go, Jeremy, Whipping, Immortality/Rearviewmirror, Alive, Black, Blood, Porch
enc: Go, Even Flow, Better Man, Improv (Words Seem Out of Place), Indifference, Rockin' in the Free World
notes: This show was broadcast on the Australian radio station, JJJ. Ed remarks: "It's not just us tonight, we're on the radio. I just thought I'd warn you, you know, if you, if you're s'posed to be at your friend's house spending the night, you weren't allowed to come, don't get your voice on the radio, we don't want you to get in trouble. Ah fuck it, get in trouble!" Later he says, "Fine bunch of mutants we got here We're all mutants up here, too." 'Jeremy' and 'Even Flow' are both sporting a new intros. Ed notes the full moon: "It's really too bad they couldn't open the roof in this place cuz there's a fuckin full moon out there that we're missing ... so if someone's out there listening to us in their car, stick your head out the window.. at home, go to the windows. Things happen in a full moon, good things, bad things, things happen." Ed gives his list of N.W. words/phrases. Reference is made to the poor security the previous night ("... we got the guys from last night the fuck outta here"). Ed acknowledges his wife, Beth: "She's back home, so it's not as if she's going to hear this on the radio, but it's me and Beth's 129 month anniversary today. And I'm going to sing the first line of this famous New Zealand song. This is for her. 'I've got you, and that's all I want.' [sings a couple bars of the Split Enz, 'I Got You'].
That's for her. This one's for you." (leading to 'Better Man'). Dave Grohl joins PJ for 'RitFW.' " stolen from 5H |

enc 1: Black, Porch, Immortality
enc 2: Indifference
notes: PJ performs their first six songs seated, experiencing some of the effects of the altitude and taking a different approach from the previous night. They get frustrated being seated (Stone declares, "All right, "fuck the seats") and they dump the chairs as they launch into 'Last Exit.'
'RVM' is interrupted to break up a fight. ("What are you guys fighting for? This is a rock and roll concert.") PJ picks up the song right where they left off. A new, slower version of 'Jeremy' is premiered here. The impromptu 'I've Just Seen a Face,' a Beatles' tune, is sung by Ed a capella. 'This Boy' is a song by an LA band, That Dog. Ed's parting comment: "Thanks for coming up to the mountain with us."

enc: Leaving Here, Better Man, Immortality, Porch, So You Want to be a Rock 'n Roll Star, Indifference
notes: Ed opens the show early with the (then) unreleased 'Dead Man,'. Later he quips, "So these are the faces I would have seen if I could have lifted my head up in San Francisco." After a long departure from these sort of antics, Ed climbs the speaker stacks and scaffolding during 'Porch.' He includes a bit of the 'Three Little Birds' tag in Porch, repeating the "every little thing's gonna be alright" line a few times. Ben Harper and Kim Warnick, from the Fastbacks, join PJ in 'Rock 'n Roll Star.'

enc: Who You Are, State of Love and Trust, Not for You, Present Tense, Leaving Here, Yellow Ledbetter
notes: This show was broadcast by many radio stations around the world, opening with a recording of John F. Kennedy's famous speech ("I am a Berliner"). After the first few songs, Ed asks, "How's everybody in Berlin tonight? For any of you are in the back and can't see, it's pretty damn packed in front is everybody OK? ... Do yourselves and everyone else a favor and watch out for your neighbor ... protect the women and children" leading to 'Red Mosquito.' After 'Lukin,' Stone steps up and says, "Alright, I'm gonna sing one," launching 'Mankind.' 'Hunger Strike is a nice surprise, with the crowd loudly singing along. Ed has a nice intro for 'Blood:' "Alright we'd like to say thanks, thanks for coming out, those of you lucky enough to get tickets ... We've had some interesting shows in Germany ... I remember every one of them, for good and bad, but actually this show is on the radio tonight so a bunch of other people were eavesdropping ... I fucked up quite a few times, thanks for covering up. This next song is called, 'I'll be glad when you're dead and gone, you bastard you', or 'this blood's for you.'" The encore begins with Ed chatting, "Thanks, very much. I don't know what to say so I'm just going to say, 'I am a donut.'" Later, Ed thanks Radio Fritz for playing "records that nobody else would" and for broadcasting the concert. Then, "... and now, Mike and I would like to serenade you," leading to 'Present Tense.' The band seems very ON and totally into this show, even if some of the songs seem to be played very fast. These radio broadcasts are just the greatest!
An "aftershow," similar to the Atlanta 94 radio show, broadcast only in Germany, featured Ed playing music and chatting with fans about life.
[Ed's DJ set: Pebbles (Shudder to Think), Strength to Endure (The Ramones), Sword of Damocles (Lou Reed), Sparks (The Who), Let Me Sleep (Christmas Time) (Pearl Jam), Bee Girl (Pearl Jam), Gravity (Howard Johnson and Gravity), Crystal Gypsy (Sebadoh), Jealous Guy (John Lennon), Rock 'n' Roll Radio, Let's Go! (The Ramones), Rockin' in the Free World (PJ w/ Neil Young from MTV VMA '93)]

Quality is great But, it is mp3 sourced and there are gaps betwean tracks.
10/22/01 - Key Arena: Seattle, WA (Groundwork 2001 Benefit) [50m]
soundcheck: I Got Shit, Insignificance (with a different middle), Grievance, new song, Gimme Some Truth, Nothing As It Seems, new song (not played at Bridge)
set: Gimme Some Truth, Grievance, Insignificance, Given to Fly, Light Years, Nothing As It Seems, I Am Mine, Better Man, Do the Evolution, Long Road (with Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan)
notes: This benefit for hunger was webcast. Opening with Lennon's 'Gimme Some Truth' and then strongly accelerating through 'Grievance' and 'Insignificance,' it appears that PJ is ready to plug in after the prior two night's acoustic shows! Ed sets the guitar aside halfway through 'Insignificance,' grabbing it and taking an ebow to it in the modified midsection breakdown. There's a bit of a false start to 'Light Years,' but it's 'GTF' with 'Light Years' following. Ed holds a high note for a long time during 'Better Man' and the whole band picks up during the jam at the end (with the "This is one of those times, you've got to try; won't you please, be mine ... don't let me down ..." tag). 'DTE' just kicks ass-wow! Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan vocalizes halfway through 'Long Road,' and he and Ed share a long ambrace while Ed plays out on guitar to close the song and the set. Very touching moment.
During R.E.M.'s set (following PJ's), they play about 1/3 of 'Better Man' (jury is out as to whether it was affectionate or mocking) and then during a fiery 'People Have The Power'inserted into the middle of 'It's the End of the World As We Know It,' Ed comes running behind the drumkit from stage right to a microphone set up for him stage left. Ed sings backing vocals and takes a verse and imitates Michael dancing when they go back into 'ITEOTW,' and even sings a few bars, and the two hug for an extended period of time (both wearing little fedoras) at the end. Unexpected and surprisingly intense ending to tonight's show.
The original setlist from tonight's show (from the soundboard): Grievance, Given To Fly, Insignificance, Light Years, Nothing As It Seems, I Am Mine, Better Man, Gimme Some Truth, Do The Evolution, I Got Shit, Long Road
