05/16/71 Robinson Apartment: Acoustic CDR 1 Lou Reed Richard and Lisa Robinson's Apartment New York, NY 1971-05-16 01 Berlin (fragment) 02 I Love You 03 Wild Child 04 Ride Into The Sun 05 Lisa Says 06 She's My Best Friend 07 Hangin' 'Round 08 Walk On The Wild Side 09 The Kids 10 What Goes On/Follow The Leader ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Downloaded from dime. Seeder?s notes: The recording presented here is from a cassette received in trade in 1973. It's a bit longer than the boot, mostly due to the presence of a fragment of "Berlin" not included on the CD, and it has slightly better sound quality, although the analog distortion that's present on the boot is also present here--it sounds like the original recording was overmodulated. These aren't really home recordings but the soundtrack to a videotape recorded by writer and producer Richard Robinson at his apartment. "Hangin' 'Round" and "Walk On The Wild Side" have significantly different lyrics than their later released versions. The backing vocals on "Hangin' 'Round" are by Lisa Robinson and (I think) Brigid Polk. That's Richard Meltzer accompanying Lou on "Walk On The Wild Side" and "The Kids" (labeled on my tape as "I am the Water Man," although it's doubtful if that was ever actually the title of the song.)
10/14/72 Leicester University CDR 1 Lou Reed Leicester University 14 October 1972 White Light/White Heat/Lonesome Cowboy Bill I'm Waiting For The Man Pale Blue Eyes I'll Be Your Mirror Candy Says Sweet Jane Heroin Berlin Who Loves The Sun? I Can't Stand It Wild Child Rock And Roll Head Held High Sister Ray Lisa Says Lou Reed: guitar, vocals Vinnie Laporta: guitar Eddie Reynolds: guitar Bobby Resigno: bass Scottie Clark: drums Notes from dimeadozen.org: A couple of weeks into their UK tour, ostensibly to promote the as-yet unreleased "Transformer", Lou and the Tots play at Leicester University. The set list has evolved a little since the tour began, but there are still no "Transformer" tunes (he?s surprised when someone calls out for "Walk On The Wild Side"). One of the best (if not THE best) shows of the 1972 tour - a truly outstanding selection of songs and inspired performances from the whole band. "I'll Be Your Mirror" and "Who Loves The Sun?" make rare appearances, there's an achingly tender solo version of "Candy Says", a nice loose version of "Sister Ray", and possibly the earliest known "solo" live rendition of "Lisa Says". And Lou has a few words of introduction for most of them.
11/01/72 Mile End Sundown CDR 2 Lou Reed London 1 November 1972 "Some Kinda Love" Mile End Sundown, London 1 November 1972 Disc 1 White Light/White Heat Lonesome Cowboy Bill I'm Waiting For The Man Pale Blue Eyes Some Kinda Love Afterhours Sweet Jane Heroin Walk On The Wild Side I Can't Stand It Wagon Wheel Rock And Roll Disc 2 Sister Ray Sweet Jane Heroin Walk On The Wild Side I'm Waiting For The Man Rock And Roll Some Kinda Love Afterhours Lou Reed: guitar, vocals Vinny Laporta: guitar Eddie Reynolds: guitar Bobby Resigno: bass Scottie Clark: drums On "Sister Ray", Lou and band are joined by the support act, Phillip Goodhand Tait, who played piano (and harmonica?). This must surely be the only recorded version of "Sister Ray" with what sounds like a harmonica solo. All of disc 1 and the 1st track on disc 2 are a straight transfer of a poor quality cassette of the whole show. The remaining tracks on disc 2 are from the "Some Kinda Love" vinyl bootleg LP which was issued in the mid 1980s.

Rock And Roll (encore) 16. Sister Ray The opening night of the "Berlin" aka the "Rock and Roll Animal" tour, as captured by an excellent audience recording (certainly for its time). Notes from the source: "The reason that the sound quality changes in the middle of Sister Ray is that everyone in the crowd was standing up at that point, so the taper got up off the ground, stood up, and held his little $25 Radio Shack tape recorder above the crowd's heads. And that is a dog's stifled bark in the middle of Satellite of Love--a seeing-eye dog belonging to a blind girl at the show."

10/19/01 Getty Center CDR 2 An Evening With Richard Thompson Getty Museum Los Angeles, CA. 10/19/01 Supporting Musicians John Densmore (misc perc), Judith Owens (vo) From the Evening's original Concert Program Notes: ************************************** We had great fun last year-possibly at the expense of the audience - with our show "One Thousand Years Of Popular Music", so I thought something similar might be appropriate this time. Someone paid me the backhanded compliment of declaring that the show did not lack for ambition; I have taken this stinging rebuke somewhat to heart, and this year, in spite of the snappy title, we will limit ourselves to a mere nine hundred years of Western musical history. I feel a kindly service has been performed to the audience in skipping over the heavy moralizing of Saint Godric (11th century), and we commence our odyssey with good old "Anon", working our way up to the latter-day troubadours of the twenty-first century. On our journey, we shall pass through moods blithe and troubled, bawdy and sacred. As I am unqualified to sing 90 percent of the music on show, let me stress here that the songs are intended to be the stars this evening; as fashions change and the baby gets thrown out with the bath water, we forget how appealing some of the old stuff can be. Bear with me this evening if I try to find a few selections that reflect on recent tragedies - for the good of my own heart I need to express some thoughts of patriotism, spiritual uplift, and human values. I hope you will join in as the mood takes you. Best Wishes, Richard Thompson Disc 1 o1 Introduction o2 "Worlds Blis Ne Last" - a 12th Century song in pre-Chaucerian Old English, with Richard on guitar and John on hand percussion; they walked on stage to the beat of the drum and went right into the song, whose lyrics were barely recognizable as English, if that. o3 "So Ben Mi Ca Bon Tempo" - a rather catchy song in medieval Italian by 16th Century composer Orazio Vecchi o4 "Bonnie St. Johnstone" - a genuinely creepy Scottish murder ballad about a woman who gave birth to twins in the forest, murdered them, and was later condemned to hell by the ghosts of her children o5 "When I Am Laid In Earth" - a song by Henry Purcell, sung by Judith o6 "A-Beggin' I Will Go" - described by Richard as an "unbelievably old" song which I actually knew from a Scottish version called "Tae the Beggin' I Will Go" done by The Tannahill Weavers o7 "Blackleg Miner" - a song about strike-breakers from the England's Industrial Age o8 "Shenandoah" - a terrific rendition of an old American favorite of mine Disc 2 o1 "I Live in Trafalgar Square" - a ditty from the English music hall days o2 "Why Have My Loved Ones Gone?" - by Stephen Foster o3 "There Is Beauty In The Bellow Of The Blast" - from "The Mikado", by Gilbert & Sullivan (!), which Richard and Judith sang together (Wes said, "That's a lot more difficult than it sounds", and it sounded pretty damned difficult to me.) o4 "Old Rockin' Chair/ - from Hoagy Carmichael o5 "Orange Coloured Sky" - from Hoagy Carmichael o6 "Hobo Bill's Last Ride" - from Jimmie Rodgers, "The Singing Brakeman" and one of the fathers of country music o7 "Cry Me A River" - a big hit for Julie London in 1955, sung by Judith o8 "The Fool" - from Elvis Presley, but only a snippet thereof o9 "A Legal Matter" - one of the less well-known songs from The Who, written (of course) by Pete Townshend o10 "Tempted" - by Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford of Squeeze ("One of my favorite bands of the last 10, 20, 30, 40 years," said Richard) o11 "Kiss" - by The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known as Prince But Now Once Again Known As Prince, to finish up the main set. o12 Richard, John and Judith came back for an encore of "You'll Never Walk Alone", from "Carousel" by Rogers and Hammerstein.
