11/04/00 Berkeley Community Theatre CDR 2 A Comments: The first set is about 79 minutes long. Unfortunately, the last track of the first set doesn't fit on a 74 minute disc with the rest of set 2. So you can either put the first set on an 80 min disc or split it up and put the whole show on three 74 minute discs. Levels are a little low, but I couldn't be at the seat to make watch levels all night. I decided to set levels conservatively. I think it came out well. Notice that at the encore, I had to climb back to the seat where the rig was to raise the stand. Everyone decided to stand (finally) and the stand was still about 4.5' high. There was one other visible taper running Naks from the balcony. This appears to be the only FOB source. - joe Najera

I have 2 foam-padded L-shaped metal brackets I made that can be attached to a pole and I frequently use them instead of a mic stand. I attached the brackets to pillars on each side of the room, about 40 feet apart and 30' straight back from the each main stack, and used one cardiod on each side of the room and one PZM for the middle channel. I put them all about 15 feet up in the air to limit crowd noise. I found a nice place up on the balcony where there was an AC outlet and ran all the mic cable up there. I used three 50 foot balanced XLR cables to hook it all up, and ran the cable in the air so it didn't get walked on. The show was transfred using EAC from a set of Master CDs. Wilson has asked that I refer to his mic setup as "Wilson's Rig". This is becaue it is not a Schopes of Neumann setup that you normally see. All of the equipment requires AC power but because of his connections he is able to set the mics up in the best place. Once you hear this show you will realize just how much more important mic placement is over the mic brand. These tracks have a significant increase in the amount of tape hiss present. I found it to interfere with my enjoyment of the music. I created Hiss Reduced versions of these tracks for this supplement. I also crossfaded the real change (?) at ~11:40 in Alligator so that it doesn't blow your tweeters out! If you wish to create a CD using these HR tracks, simply use them instead of the ones in the main distribution. The main distribution files were the source for these supplment tracks. I used Sound Forge Noise Reduction to do the hiss reduction and other "voodoo". The tracks which were modified are included in the directory with this file. Here are the tracks that this supplement replaces: Disc 1 7. Midnight Hour Disc 2 7. Tuning Break 8. Alligator > Drums > Alligator (reprise) > 9. Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) 10. 03/03/68 Haight Street CDR 1 A- Grateful Dead Haight Street San Francisco, CA 3.3.68 DHH pre-FM Viola Lee Blues Smokestack Lightnin' Turn On Your Lovelight "Mary is looking for Shirley..." It Hurts Me Too >From Deadlists: Viola Lee Blues [21:03] ; Smokestack Lightnin' [11:#57] ; Turn On Your Lovelight [#14:10] ; It Hurts Me Too [3:11#] ; Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment ; Dancing In The Streets RECORDING 60 A? Only Viola Lee Blues thru It Hurts Me Too circulates. The master tape is incomplete, as the tapers' batteries were low. David Gans played the timed portion on KPFA, minus the That's It For The Other One suite which was recorded, but rendered unlistenable by the battery problem. DeadBase XI reports that the taper remembers that the closer was Dancing In The Streets. It is possible that additional songs were played between the second Cryptical and Dancin'. Larry, an eyewitness writes: "i remember getting off the bus on haight street That spring day, pushing my way through the crowds to see what all the excitement was about (i didn't know- did anyone? -that the deadwere parking a flat bed truck across haight street to play a free gig!)

06/05/69 Fillmore West CDR 2 A- There are two SBD masters of this show -- reels and cassettes. One master has 6 minutes cut from the Cryptical reprise; the other master (or circulating copies) cuts in just after the beginning of The Other One and runs unbroken through to the conclusion of the set. Between them, the two masters contain the complete show. Composites circulate, but also many partial combinations and unpatched fragmentary versions of That's It For The Other One. Collector beware. The Eleven analyzes: St. Stephen > 1st vocals 1:06 > transition jam 2:25 > Eleven jam 3:21 > Eleven vocals 0:42 > Eleven jam 2:53 > 2nd theme jam 1:41 > transition 0:48 > Lovelight. SBD of parts of this show have circulated for years, sometimes mislabeled "Family Dog 8/29/69." About an hour of FM excerpts were broadcast in the early 90s. Copies of one of the masters only emerged recently and optimal complete composites are finally beginning to circulate. Rob Bertrando writes: "The partial reel master of 6/5/69" is plagued by 'scrape flutter.'" 03/01/70 Family Dog at the Great Highway CDR 2 A this is the complete show as per Deadlists:patched with AUD: 3rd gen cassette > CD > SoundForge (5% speed correction/amplify) > CD "Total time 2:13:40 +. Timings are based on the AUD tape supplemented by the SBD. The AUD tape was mastered by Harry Ely. This tape cuts in during the "New Speedway Boogie jam," which sounds like Bobby playing the comp to this song over & over while the audience claps along and the equipment crew tries to get the rest of the band up & running. After 4:15 this cuts to another couple minutes of tuning, soundcheck activity and bitching about the sound system. The show proper finally kicks in with Casey Jones, though the circulating SBD only starts with Big Boy Pete. The circulating AUD is missing Me And My Uncle and King Bee, but they appear on the SBD. On the AUD tape China Cat cuts in at "kimono like a crazy-quilt star gown," and the 2nd stanza of Rider is clipped. These defects aside, AUD tape is quite a decent job of audience recording. The circulating SBD breaks off after Uncle John's Band. It's possible that Baby Blue was the conclusion of the show." patch by H.B., 7/01 thanks to Uli for the AUD and Matjaz for the SBD

Some digital errors remain as it proved unrealistic to re-transfer the reel due to circumstances including the physical condition of the tape itself.
05/15/70 Fillmore East (Late Show) CDR 6 A Note by Leigh Orf, who uploaded this show to orp.etree.org: I did some very minor editing to this show, mostly putting tasteful fades where there were cuts in the original. Thanks again to the aforementioned folks, plus David Finney for hunting the show down in its best form...

02/18/71 Capitol Theater CDR 3 A The Sound Forge noise reduction was used to attenuate a very narrow frequency band (in the vicinity of 8000 Hz) which was present as interference on the original reels. See http://members.home.net/orf/notch.html for details. Remastered by Leigh Orf <orf@mailbag.com>
02/19/71 Capitol Theatre CDR 3 A genealogy of this recording: 7" two track BBD reel w/ Dolby A @ 7 1/2 ips > PCM501ES @ 44.055 kHz PCM501ES analog out > Fostex D5 @ 48 kHz (Dolby not decoded?) > WAV > Cool Edit Pro (filtering and sample rate conversion) > SHN data files (seed) The recording is in mono, and reflects very occasional analog tape flaws such as bursts of flutter. These flaws are from the master. The lineage information available states that Dolby A decoding was not performed, but the sound is nevertheless very good and does not sound compressed. As with the other Port Chester recordings, a slight whine comes and goes throughout the recording. We have applied a very light notch filter as needed. The filtering was accomplished using Cool Edit Pro, and consisted of a sequence of notch filters at and around 8k, approx 1k wide and only 2db in depth. The filtering was mainly during the in-between banter but also on the songs where required - more so the 2nd set. In The Other One there were two short bursts of static that appear to have come from the stage, and these were reduced in level. No other filtering was performed. As indicated in the set list, Bird Song is cut. There are also several cuts on the master during crowd noise before Truckin' starts the first set, but who cares?

Signal fed into DigiDesign Pro Tools on a Macintosh with Audio Media III sound card. The only post processing was normalization. Final digital version assembled by: Noah Weiner - noahbw@home.com note: Weinberg recorded each set of this show on its own reel. Both were in very delicate condition at the time of the transfer (Summer 2001). The set two reel was degraded so much in sound quality (a tremendous loss of high end frequencies) that it proved better to used an older cassette copy of the set two reel for this new distribution. Also, Sing Me Back Home, Sugar Magnolia, and Casey Jones had been recorded over on the master reel at some point prior to the Summer 2001 digital transfer. Evidence of the current state of the set two reel can be heard on the set two intro, the first 23 seconds of Bertha, and the set two outro, which do come from the master reel. Also, the track list for set one differs from what prior record keeping indicated. However, this new track order is direct off the master reel. The old order seems to indicate that songs were possibly rearranged to fit them more comfortably onto cassette.note: there are some very slight digital ticks on tracks d2t12, d2t13 and d3t01. These are confirmed on the DAT that the transfer came from.

The music actually comes to us from two different tapes with very similar qualities. However, one tape had about the first 1 minute and 40 seconds missing on Promised Land, so I spliced it in from the other tape. The other tape had some other problems, not to mention a good portion of the between song banter cut out, so needless to say, we used the good tape for that.

02/26/77 Swing Auditorium CDR 3 A* One instance of DAT noise on second disc. Notes from Walter: The source, on both sets, was Betty Board Reel PCM (Beta) DAT (48k). This was my first sample rate conversion, but it came out great once I figured out how to do it right. I recorded the DAT digitally from my SONY PCM-M1 into my Wave 8/24 card with Cool Edit SE. I then down-sampled it to 44.1 with the high quality filter setting. The edits were made in Cakewalk Pro Audio 8, and it was mastered with Adaptec EZ CD creator to a Panasonic scsi CD-R.

04/24/78 Horton Field House, Illinois State University CDR 3 A Ahhhhh. Normal Illinois. Long one of my favorite shows; for some unknown reason it doesn't circulate much. This show came to me on a DBX encoded reel in 1979. I was told at the time that it was an edited dub off the master reel, but listening to it critically, there's too much hiss for that. I still have that reel, transfered from it directly to dat. From Dat, it went through a Digi96 card to my hard disk. Sound Forge was used to normalize, anti-alias and resample to 44.1, then CD WAV to track it out. Those WAV files were directly converted to SHN. I hope that spreading this copy causes an even better one to arise out there, because this show deserves some attention. It has never failed to stop the conversation at any gathering where I've played it. Enjoy! Mike McCaw

08/14/79 McNichols Sports Arena CDR 3 A (audience recording by Rob Eaton) All three of these shows were supposed to be at Red Rocks, just west of Denver in the foothills but due to very bad weather the venue was moved. I didn't record the 8/12/79 Red Rocks show due to the weather, but did record both 8/13 and 8/14 from virtually the same location with the same setup. Although the 13th is maybe a better show, the 14th is much less common in the trading world. In 79' for reasons unknown to me today I would pause my deck between songs. That policy changed as the years went on but for the most part I was into getting as few song cuts as possible and somehow i had better tape management by pausing. This show is no exception as the only comes during drums/space. I got in later than normal for the 14th and really didn't get settled until Easy To Love You. I raised the mic's as the show progressed as was the custom for FOB taping in the late 70's. There is a small tape artifact early in Jack A Roe that happened after the show in the car. It is very slight and not really a problem.

10/24/79 Springfield Civic Center CDR 3 A (audience recording by Rob Eaton FOB Center) This was one of those shows that getting the decks in and staying set up was even harder. As with most up-front recordings the crowd was slightly out of control. I had to raise and lower the mic's as the night progressed depending on security. It's not the best recording I've made but for a 79' it's not bad. Again like the 8/14 show I was pausing in between songs and I used 3 tapes to keep from getting cuts, which is a good thing with this show since it was over 50 minutes before drums on set 2. The other tapers I knew at the time all had to flip at Playin! At any rate I hope you enjoy it!

The first was a 1.5 second snippet of Mama Tried (~2:23 into the track), which was patched cleanly from another verse of the song. The second is abrupt level change near the end of Music Never Stopped (6:30 into the track). This was normalized somewhat, however audible artifacts do exist on this one. Both original snippets are incluided in the 'covers+archive' folder on the shn discs. All other editing was crossfading of cassette cuts and flips, all of these fell in crowd noise, and no music was disturbed

12/09/81 Events Center, University Of Colorado CDR 3 A Comments: * He's Gone cuts just before Drums, picks up there on Disc 3 (May be due to a tape flip on master.) From Jim Wise (posted to DNC on 08/05/2000): Not only was I there, but I recorded one of the only 3 HQ masters made at the show that I am aware of this particular evening was (along with the greek 9/81's) the hardest venue of all time to get gear into & 99% of the tapers I knew at the time just simply could not get the goods in. I sneaked my recording equipment into the events center in the afternoon while the GD were setting up & I had access, then I stashed my back pack in a plumbing closet & retrieved it after I went out and re-entered at show time. It's funny you should mention this cause Dick went off on this show big time (as only he could) & Rob B. can attest to this fact. Good news is that there were reels ran (a rarity at this point in time) the sbd has a bad cut in the "other one" and another in the 1st set, but my pretty darn good aud is relatively flawless & its an enjoyable performance to boot shn'ed by Jason Holden <jholden@du.edu> Enjoy!!
