(SBD) Audio compilation I put together from various sources of the band's four New Wave Theatre appearances. I'm pretty sure the first appearance was 1980 (tracks 1-3), the second 1981 (tracks 4-5), the third 82 (6-9), and the fourth 83 (10-11). All sound really good, except for the first which is exceptionally crunchy. |

Queer Pills rough takes |
CD-R |

A- |
(DEMO) Sounds like this went through a lot of generations before it reached me. It's definitely a soundboard patch, just a bit muddy sounding. The band does 5-10 takes of each song until they get a good one, then moves on. Todd Homer sings on these. |

(DEMO) Jeff Dahl on vocals. Great sound for a demo, with the only real problem being a ton of hiss in the left channel. A lot of the songs that were redone for BtS sound better here, due to lyrical changes for the album recordings ("Gonna carve my initials in the side of your head!") |

(DEMO) Excellent Mike Saunders solo demos. A lot of these would later appear on the band's late-80s efforts, but they sound a lot better here. Crucial for any Samoans fan. I dug this out of Chris BCT's tape collection a while back, and thus some of the track titles are guesses. |

(AUD) Audio is a bit poor and there are tiny clicks between tracks. I have gotten ahold of both sets, each about 20 songs, making this a 2-disc affair. One of Henry's first shows with the band! The highlight is a SUPER intense and FAST version of "Scream" on the second disc where Hank lives up to the song's title. |

(AUD) Amazing show that's well recorded. It's my favorite FEAR show purely due to the incredible energy in the club; you can really feel it as you listen. Gets a bit choppy near the middle but what can ya do? There's also a one-second or so silent bit at the end of We Gotta Get Out Of This Place and what I think is a tape flip at the start of Little Girls. The version of Hank Williams Was Queer is a lot better here than on the 7". Also includes an extended version of the FEAR Anthem at the end, complete with an totally over-the-top offensive (even for FEAR) and absolutely hilarious obscenity spew from Lee. Pure mayhem! |

(SBD) This is now my 2nd favorite FEAR show. It's fast! Probably the fastest version of I Don't Care About You that I've heard. Super crunchy Philo guitar in the left channel, grinding Lee rhythm guitar in the right channel, vocals and drums smack dab in the center, and bass that has no bass to it, only a dull pum-pum-pum sound to it. Easily the roughest-edged FEAR show recorded. Still, it really makes the tappa-tappa sound apparent and shows how energetic and incredible FEAR's live show was. The only problem is that the first four songs have a lot of tape slur on 'em. Still totally solid stuff. |

(AUD) Decent B+ sound, but with quite a few extremely rough starts right at the beginnings of some songs. Also troubling is that part of Camarillo is garbled, near the middle. Still a good show. Lee sings a surprisingly patriotic version of the band's anthem, and invites everyone onstage to dance and sings "We're waiting for the meat" during the last song, during which some asshole decides to (apparently) grab the mic and sing an out-of-tune version of "We've Got A Bigger Problem Now". Wholesome fun that the whole family can enjoy. |

(AUD/PRO) Brilliant show, filmed by someone with a tripod with great soundboard audio (it could be cam audio, but it sounds very good). Good song choices, although it's too bad some of the band's best live songs (Strangulation, Waiting For The Gas, Responsibility) were retired for the newer lineups. |

Excellent show. In fact, the best Hüsker show I've heard. They really should have released this instead of LSR as their debut since not only is the sound quality significantly better (this is maybe an A or an A- and I would call LSR a B+ or B++), but the song selection here is phenomenal (Sore Eyes, Travel in the Opposite Car, Do You Remember, Wheels, Sexual Economics and Private Hell being far better than the cuts that made LSR). Any fan of the band's early stuff should pick up Everything Falls Apart (the "And More" songs aren't nessecary), Metal Circus, and this show, and you'll be set. |

(PRO) Grant Hart looks super creepy here. The fact that he is a total mouth breather here doesn't help. In addition, Greg Norton does not yet have his trademark moustache (which is quite shocking as well), and Bob Mould makes some of the weirdest facial expressions I have ever seen.
As for the musical performance, the band totally rocks. They play almost all the songs from Land Speed Record in a similar order, as well as some tracks that didn't surface in the studio until up to two years later, and some that I don't think I've heard in any other form. It's quite long for an early Hüsker show (about 60 minutes) and extremely energetic. They even do what is probably the first blast beat ever at the end of Tired of Doing Things.
There are a couple drop-outs in the video where it goes all blurry and gross for a few seconds (and the audio does that "bwaaawawawa" thing that old VHS tapes tend to do when this happens), but it's still pretty nice. The audio is better than LSR, a solid A-. I guess Twin/Tone has the masters from this still and might release it someday. |

Nice to hear some Zen Arcade stuff live. They cut basically all the early material out of their set after New Day Rising came out. It's funny because Hüsker Dü didn't go downhill like a lot of bands; they're early stuff is brilliant, up to Zen Arcade, and pretty much everything after is godawful, no downhill about it. They did redeem themselves with Warehouse, though. |

(AUD) Decent enough recording of an amazing show. The highlight of the show is Friend You've Got to Fall, during which Grant really lets the drumming slip, playing too slow and then speeding up every once in a while, but always slipping back into the too-slow beat. Bob sounds depressed about it as he sings the first verse, but gets angrier and eventually screams the bridge extremely passionately: "I know the difference..." It also has a mind-numbingly great guitar intro, even better than the one on The Living End. One of the coolest HüDü shows I've heard. |

(SBD) A very nice but aged soundboard. I got a very old tape of the from what appears to be a mail-order:
ENDANGERED MUSIK, "Barossa", Station Road, Brize Norton Oxon. 0x8 3Pl. (0993) 842706.
This means nothing to me so if anyone can tell me more, please do. Anyways, my tape of this was mega distorted, to the point where it would not even play. I solved this problem (kinda) by fast dubbing the show onto another blank tape. However, it still messed up a few times on the A-side of the tape, so there might be a few songs missing, I'm not sure. There is also a bit of very noticable hissy distortion over a few songs. I've pieced it together into a pretty complete package that sounds pretty good, although to be honest, I suspect others have this show in complete form and it would be better to get it from them. |

Also was probably recorded on an EP tape. It's still really good, just not great, quality wise. The show itself is insane. The filmer is on the balcony that stares right into the stage, and you can see every once in a while, people flinging themselves head-first off the side balconies (probably 20-30 feet off the ground) and into the crowd. The Angry Samoans footage is excellent and is mostly very good quality (the first two NWT songs have below average video and I've seen better versions of the Time Has Come Today promo). Someday I'd like to do a new version of this or possibly a sequel with the other Sams promo vids. Most people don't know this but they made a number of videos as VOM back in the 70s. The ones for I'm In Love With Your Mom and Electrocute Your Cock are pretty well done.
Weirdos footage is nice, their lead singer has some crazy hair.
The Circle Jerks footage is very good as well, pulled from the Best of New Wave Theatre VHS that saw a limited release in the early 90s. They do Wild In The Streets and as soon as Peter Ivers tries to do the interview spiel at the end Keith and the band start doing a raging version of Leave Me Alone instead of answering his questions.
The Plugz footage is definitely one of the highlights of the disc. They play an absolutely incredible version of In The Wait off their second album from 1981. The song (along with the rest of the album) is more Mexican-flavored pop rock on the album itself but here they punk it up a notch and it works really well.
I don't like Kraut much but their fans will surely like this footage. You get a neat promo video of All Twisted and 3 live songs, all of decent quality.
The Screamers' video is cool but unfortunately is clipped at the end. I have no idea if a full version of this actually exists in trader world. The whole band stands there completely still in a room full of TVs with zero emotion as they play the song. Apparently this was recorded live in the studio.
The Crime song has poor audio for some reason despite the video being nice Target Video quality. I don't like the fact that they are playing at a prison, but the song is OK.
Dead Boys footage is mostly of low quality and I'm not totally sure why it was included here since it doesn't really go with the rest of the DVD. I've always considered them to be more of an early punk group while all the other bands on here were most active during the 80s hardcore days (except maybe The Cramps).
Speaking of them, The Cramps' footage is all very good, but varies in quality. The Urgh! version of Tear It Up is a lot of fun.
The X video is OK. The guy who made the disc cut the intro off, though, which is about 45 seconds long but doesn't include the actual song.
It's very nice to see some Gears and UXA footage; I never knew any existed until I got this disc.
The 45 Grave stuff is very good in terms of quality and the songs themselves. I've always liked the song Wax and they play it twice here.
As for FEAR, I don't need to say much, this is probably the best quality copy of the SNL show you'll ever see, and the NWT footage is amazing. |

Laserdisc rip. As nice of a copy as you're gonna find, but it's missing one of the Catholic Discipline songs for whatever reason. If you don't care, go with this copy, if you want the complete package, go with my alternate VHS rip (which is still quite nice). |

(N/A) Extremely cool compilation of early DC punk rock video. Includes video of the entire 12/80 show that had Minor Threat's part on their DVD, Teen Idles video, SOA video, and more. Quality varies, but the footage is so rare it barely matters. |

(PRO) Great punk rock documentary. This version is from VHS and includes the uncut Black Flag footage (the DVD version, from what I hear, has a big black box over Greg Ginn and no audio). |

(AUD) A bunch of bands got together in DC to play mini-shows on this date. I have the complete FEAR, MDC, and Dead Kennedys sets, as well as fragments of the Double O and Scream sets. This is a 2-disc compilation of the aforementioned audio. |
