Thanks to joe ibrewbro for helping to set the setlist straight, pointing out the show

(As usual) While the track sizes should be correct for burning cds, I did not attempt
to define a cd-split boundary. And my naming convention is probably not
rigorously etree compliant. If such matters to you, please pardon my deviance
If you spot anything else that looks/sounds unsavory, please email me and
I will do what I can to fix it!

Candelario Matrix MSR D CD except
first 15:22 of Seastones (on Disc #2): AUD
end of Sunshine Daydream and encore: AUD
This is the Candelario matrix SBD reel recording. From 2:10 to 3:00 of Scarlet Begonias the mix gets strange while Kid adjusts his levels. We have left this passage intact (there is another version in circulation where it is patched with AUD). We have patched in from an AUD master the first 15:22 of Seastones, the tail end of Sunshine Daydream, and US Blues, all missing on the circulating MSR D. Naturally this set supplements and does not supplant the portions of this show released as parts of Dick's Picks #7, but until GDM releases the show complete, this will do the trick nicely.
Dave Greenberg did the final mastering of these discs. We don't know who mastered the patch of SSDD and US Blues; we extracted this portion from a CD of the MSR D containing Eyes through the end of the show, with this patch already in place, and nicely done -- our compliments to whoever mastered it. HB also provided important assistance. This project was instigated and these notes written by Jim Powell. SHN conversion by Jay Gerland (jay@theblackdog.org) with seed provided by Jed Distler (jdistler@composerscollab.org).

Skip's Notes:
I've always been frustrated that certain shows don't circulate in their
entirety. At the top of the list was 12/1/79 until yesterday when, through
the generosity of Charlie Miller, I received a very nice copy of the
complete show including the elusive first set. It was always my
understanding that a soundboard of the first set did not exist but . . .
here it is.

- i attenuated a number of "fireworks" explosions
- the prior exisiting etree shn seed (http://db.etree.org/shninfo_detail.php?shnid=7559) is from this source.
The mastering on that version had some clipping and pre-emphasis (i.e. not played back with dolby).

-Very nice audience recording.
-The only edting I did was retracking, fixing drop out at end of China Jam (tape flip?),
and cutting level of Day Job by 6 db.
-Drums can flow seemlessly into Space with longer media.
*Day Job may be from an unknown AUD source.
A few words from the recordists, in their own words:
-Mike Grace
I recorded both those shows on a Sony TcD5-M recorder and Nakamichi 300 super-cardiod mics. We were set up about 30 feet in front of the sound board. This was one of the last tours before the official 'Tapers Section' was established. We had to sneak the equipment into the show although security was not too tight. The tapes were transferred from the same Sony deck to a highly modified Sony 75ES DAT recorder. |

Subject: Sat. Nite Opener?
My friend & I just spoke about this show tonight. He was there and said, that on the previous night (Sat,May 3) the show had no Encore due to technical (sound) problems. So this day, the next day (Sunday), they opened the show with what would have been last nights Encore (1 more Sat. Nite).
We were talking about shows where they played this song when it wasn't actually Sat. nite. I will download the show to check it out. later...

they did open the show with OMSN and it smokes..might even be the highpoint of the show. Hot Brent keyboard solo and over the top Bobby lyrics..

...but not for the 'Saturday Night'... Try instead... SPACE. There's something about it... images of shimmering water, an isle with a lone column of an ancient ruin bathed in moonlight... Embodies what the Grateful Dead is for me... Other than that, nothing special |

Mastering Notes: the 24/48 FLACs were loaded into the Wavelab Audio Montage, and the NAK 300 source was lined up with the Sony ECM-MS5 source. Patches from the Sony mic source occur in the following places: Approx. 55 seconds into Landlady there was a dropout (patched for 5 seconds). After Funky Bitch there was a cut/dropout in the crowd noise (patched until first notes of Stash). Following Lawn Boy there was a tapeflip and the Tweezer intro was cut (patched from first notes of Tweezer for about 9 seconds). During Lizards, the Nak source was cut right after the "woah, woah" section, before the quiet building section (patched until the end of show). I smoothed out level changes in Stash, Tube, and McGrupp > HYHU with vector based volume curves.
The following mastering processes were used: Waves REQ 2-band, rolloff at 42Hz, Blue Tubes FA770 compression, BBE Sonic Maximizer and the Waves L2. The audio was downsampled to 44.1 with the 192KHz Stereo Resampler, and rendered to 16-bits with UVHR22 dithering. The resulting .WAVs were tracked in CD-WAV and converted to SHNv3 (seektables appended).

The first Tweezer Reprise?
The taper ran two D5s from two different mic sources for this night and 9/21/90. The mics both nights were Nak 300s and Sony ECM-MS5s. For 9/20/90, the sources were not labeled on the tapes or tape cover as to which mics were used for each source. Source information was determined by comparison with the 2 labelled sources for 9/21/90.
NO tracking/editing/alterations performed before archiving to 24-bit FLAC (except to trim silence from the ends).

Mastering Notes:
This a near flawless AUD, great sound, great performance. The tapeflips were smoothed with crossfades (try and find the one in the YEM vocal jam!), there was also a small drop out fixed during the YEM vocal jam. There was a level change in Highway to Hell which I fixed with vector-based volume control. Tape was stopped between the last tune and encore, I smoothed this out with a long crossfade.
The 24/48 FLACs were converted to .WAV and opened in the Wavelab Audio Montage, all edits were performed at the 24/48 stage.
The following mastering processes were used: Waves REQ 2-band, rolloff at 42Hz, Blue Tubes FA770 compression, BBE Sonic Maximizer and the Waves L2. Mastering Notes:
There was a very bad humming noise for the 1st 2 minutes of the show, I removed it with X-Noise, there was also some sortof adjustment made during Buried Alive after which everything sounds really nice. For the tuning and first minute of Buried Alive I adjusted volume (gain from the FA770) and bass levels (BBE lo contour) to make it somewhat listenable, there is a tiny crossfade at the switch point to make it smooth.
The tape was stopped in Wilson, it picks back up almost right away, I deleted the blank spot and bumped the 2 sections together. There is a crossfade in Landlady to cover the tapeflip. The tape flip right after Coil before Tweezer was quick, you can't tell it's there with the crossfade in place. The final tapeflip after Bouncin' cut no music, only crowd noise. 2dB was added to the second set to match the levels from the first.
The following mastering processes were rendered: Waves REQ (rolloff @ 40Hz), FA770 Compressor, BBE Sonic Maximizer (0.5, 2.5, -1), Waves L2 Ultramaximzer. The 192kHz stereo resampler was used to downsample, UV22 HR was used to dither to 16-bits.

Set 1 source: FM > DAT

Set 2 and 3 Source: FM > DA-P1
Transfer: Fostex D5 -> optical cable -> HOSA ODL-276 ->

The first set of this source has previously circulated along with a FOB
Schoeps recording of the 2nd and 3rd sets. My dat copy of set one had a cut
in Makisupa, so I have combined the two sources to make one complete FM
source. Big thanks to Jason for transferring my dats!
Edits to this source:
- Normalized all sets to -1.86db (peak value of the loudest set)
- Cleaned up digispots @ 3:24 (0.12sec.), 6:03 (0.031sec.),
8:00-8:01 (3 d/o's of ~0.03sec.), 10:23 (0.06sec.)of Wolfman's Brother (d3t1)
using SoundForge.
(some are still noticeable)
- added fades at the beginning/end of each set
- corrected the phase of discs 3 & 4 Jon Wolf <yahoo2@rncn.com>
- fixed the balance on D1 & D2 because the right channel was very low on
volume - 07/24/2003 - Jon Wolf <yahoo2@rcn.com>

Taped and Transferred (from DAT master)by David Schall. THANKS DAVID!
"Master" discs (ie. burned by David) extracted using EAC in secure mode with write caching
disabled, verified with SHNTool, then converted to SHN using MKW 0.97 with seek tables appended,
by Blane Harvey.
Fixes: Replaced first 3:09 mins of Down With Disease (with 5 second crossfade) from a secondary
FM source because of some reception problems on David's masters.
This is a killer source of a killer show. ENJOY!!!
