This tape has been circulating as 08-27-87 for years due to a handwriting error on the master. Also, a song ("Love on the Telephone) frequently follows this show on tape, but it is filler of a band called "Of the Cuff." *Without "Poster Nutbag" and dog story.

1-27-1988 AKA 1-30-1988
Gallagher's Waitsfield VT.
This show is dated 1-30-1988 on Phish.net as well
as on my dat.
This show is dated 1-27-1988 in the Phish Companion
so I elected to seed it using this date.
SOURCE:SBD>CASS(0)>DAT
DAT>SHN:Tascam DA-20>COAX>WAV>COOL EDIT>CDWAV>SHN
Via MKW.These SHN files are seekable in your SHNamp.
I have included both shn and wav md5s.
This show has been on a journey through the Cool Edit.
Using the Noise Reduction Feature, I have removed
2/3 of the hiss from this copy.There is still
a little bit of hiss,but it comes and goes in waves
instead of a constant annoyance.Before I did this,
the hiss was over the music,now it is behind it.
The music was left completely unaltered in this process.
When the show was originally recorded,the analog
taper kept reseting their levels louder and louder
to the point where there is some vibration.No
real distortion,just some annoying vibration so
don't crank these full throddle.I tried various
tools to try and fix it.I could not get it to my
liking so I chose to leave it alone.
About 2 minutes of Lizards is missing.
It is a very strange time for an analog flip,
but if this taper used 2 tapes for a 3 set show,
the timing matches up.
This is a fabulous show.If I had to give it a grade
for quality...
If it was recorded after 1993 it would be a "C".
Since it was recorded in 1988 and I was able to remove
most of the hiss, I give it an "A--".

Tape flips are after d1t08, td2t08, and d3 t07. The beginning of A-Train
(d1t09)
is cut a little, as is the very end of Brain (d3t07) and Whipping Post
(d3t10).
It is believed that a Cass0 copy of this show does exist, but efforts
to obtain it for transfer have been quite unsuccessful. While this may
occur in the future, I have chosen to transfer this fine copy for
enjoyment in the present |

**No DAE or resampling at all**
Minor Edits: None
"Sbd/Aud mixes: The following shows were recorded to DAT from a separate
recording board at the shows. They are some of the highest quality
Phish tapes in existence: 4/22/90, 10/30/90, 10/31/90, 11/2/90,
11/3/90, 11/4/90, 3/13/91, 3/15/91, 3/16/91, 3/17/91, 3/22/91,
3/23/91, 4/5/92.
Except for the 4/5/92 tape, they have all been fairly widely circulated.
They were done on a large recording console (not EQ) and mixed completely
separately from the board mix, rumoredly done in a truck outside the venue.
The engineer used 2 audience mics to mix in crowd/hall ambience (on most of them).
See also, PA info."
Quoted from: http://www.phish.net/PhishFAQ/tquality.html
Info From Kevin Shapiro: "11/3/90 and the other tapes of the era (10/30-11/4)
were all done by Mike Grace through a separate 16 track mixer and ran direct to 2
track DAT. He basically used the same setup in Spring 1991 too."
Mastered by Mike Grace, DATs for this transfer provided by Mikey Perrott. Thanks Mikey!

*notes*
This show was transferred by myself from analog. There are practically no other copies circulating, most traders with this show are either inactive or have incomplete copies.
There are a few errors, mostly gaps (corrected as much as possible, 3 or 4 total), and HYHU was replaced with Cold as Ice for some reason. This is the best i could do to get it circulating again. Overall quality isnt too bad. |

Then more Harpua and the Jimmy story (Jimmy and Poster Nutbag going to Vegas). They stop and camp. At the campsite, they start yodelling. $Based on the song from Jim Stafford's "Spiders and Snakes" album. #With yodelers. John McEuen and Heather and Anamiekl August did a country/yodel tune. The story continues, Jimmy & Poster meet up with four "Elvii" on the edge of Las Vegas and have a duel. ^The four "Elvii" sing the first few verses of "Suspicious Minds" and then Fish continues. Jimmy (Fish?) is victorious. Then the dog/cat fight. Harpua wins and the song finishes. At some point everyone returns and then Brian Mantia, the drummer for Primus, shows up for "Suzie Greenberg". **All of the above musicians; with "Suzie Q" jam lead by one of the Elvii.

*For Elvis Week. #This segment was dominated by the stage presence of Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Colonel Forbin doesn't meet Icculus this time but rather finds "Ken Uncle Sam Bozo Kesey" (or something near that). At this time Kesey, dressed as Uncle Sam, appears on the stage and accounces that the Bozos have been missing for two years but are on Phish tour now. He calls one by one the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, and Frankenstein (Phish breaks into "Frankenstein") to help him find the Bozos, which soon appear as four white things in costume. After singing about the Bozos which are doing interpretive dance, the Pranksters all leave the stage after Kesey hears the "Bozo Mockingbird". Trey comments that this is what happens "after you do too much acid 30 years later..." Phish had been playing background music (including McGrupp and Ghost teases) which had developed by this point into a deep funk jam. Trey announces that "we are supposed to start 'Famous Mockingbird', but the funk is too deep." The band continues the funk jam and eventually segues into "Camel Walk."

Then, the crowd "carries" the pieces of this design to the side of the venue where it is assembled and hoisted for everyone to see onto a tower. This wood tower is tall and covered in painted plywood and has been built during the two shows. As "Harry Hood" goes into its jam, Trey asks Chris to turn the lights off, and the band jams while the front section has a gigantic Glow Stick War. Trey tells the crowd at the end of the jamto "go and get more of those, because that was cool." #No Muel Duel. ^The entire art tower was burned to the ground

No normalization was done.
There was only room for about a 10% increase without clipping;
you could probably go up to 150% or so if you clip the peaks.
I figured for this show, since the levels were pretty good,
I'd leave it alone and let everyone have an unadulterated source. |

E: Ride Captain Ride (0:07)
*After "Have Mercy," there was apparently confusion or miscommunication (a partial shift back into "Bowie," then some reggae like "Have Mercy," then Page draws them into a reggae style "HYHU" jam, which brings Fish out front for a vacuum solo). #Then, Mike hands Fish a pair of "B-AH" cymbals, leading to "Cracklin' Rosie"; followed by Fish tossing the cymbals and doing several laps around the stage.

Set 2 was played from midnight to sunrise, non-stop. +With marshmallow war, lots of balloons, and aerial tortillas. *With Fish on vacuum. **Unfinished. ***First time played; J.J. Cale cover from the album "Naturally" (best known for the Eric Clapton version). #Set begins around 11:35 pm with Father Time on stage pedaling away at a stationary bike, powering a large clock, with the sound of the gears on the PA (possibly a Siket Disc track?). At approximately 11:50 pm, Father Time collapses from exhaustion and the clock stops. At this time, with appropriate sound effects, a large fan boat entered the field from halfway back, stage right. Soon the sides and top of the fan boat were blown off to reveal the band riding in the hot dog from 12-31-94. The hot dog approached the stage as the band threw leis and other goodies into the crowd. Once the hot dog reached the stage, the band disembarked carrying several meatsticks. They fed these to Father Time, reviving him to drive to clock to midnight. ^Instrumental version, with the band picking up the song from a pre-recorded version played during the hot dog ride. ^^With vocal jam, as Trey, Mike, and Page sang the notes as they played them. ^^^Recorded live for ABC's Millennium coverage; Trey instructed the crowd to chant the word "Cheesecake" after the song (instead of applauding), in an attempt to confuse TV viewers; Trey introduced the band for the recorded footage and offered a message of peace and harmony for the world ("The right lane is for driving. The left lane is for passing. So stay in the right lane unless you're passing."). ^^^^Preceded by "Meatstick" tease (possibly as Central Time hit midnight). %With "Cheesecake" vocal jam. %%Trey solo acoustic. %%%With Mike holding up a voice box, repeating the phrase "Quadrophonic Toppling." %%%%With Fish on vacuum; Fish introduced Page before the song, and Mike and Trey afterwards, and the band as "Phish 2000." $Preceded by a tease of the "Harry Hood" intro. $$No encore; post-show music was the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun."

Show Notes: * - first time played;
** - with a false start (Trey stopped the band and made a comment about practicing, then re-started a moment later), and with a vocal jam based on the name "George Takei" (the actor who played Mr. Sulu on Star Trek);
*** - lyric was "woke up this morning ... about 3 o'clock this afternoon... 'fatty'," and "Waffle House" and "Hooters" were mentioned in the singing toward the end of the song;
# - toward the end, Trey hands his guitar to Page (who plays it from his normal seat, doing things like playing behind his head, etc.), Mike hands his bass to Trey, Mike picks up the "B" and "AH" cymbals (traditionally used during "Crackin' Rosie"), and the song ends;
## - Trey says: "Ladies and gentlemen, Al Gore!", also with a Page solo/breakdown and a Mike solo/breakdown

- written by Shel Silverstein, originally performed by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show - First Time Played, and because Phish is on the cover of the current issue
** - prior to Fee, stagehand Brad Sands put lyrics out for Trey; also, Fee may have been incomplete
*** - with heavy What's the Use teases by Trey
^ - with Woman From Tokyo (Deep Purple) riffs by Trey, possibly unintentional, possibly referencing the Japanese woman who made Fishman's new dress (same design, fewer holes)
^^ - with delay loops
^^^ - during the end of the last verse, someone got on stage (from stage right), grabbed Trey's mic, and was only able to shout "I Love You Phish!" before being dragged off stage |

Setlist:
The "Tower Jam"
Notes:
The Tower Jam was an all-improvised (and unannounced, though heavily rumored) set
from the roof of the old air-traffic control tower, taking place about 2-3am,
with special lighting by Chris Kuroda.
Featured many teases, accompanied by dancers on rappel lines down the tower's sides.
I've left this tracked as it should be, as one track clocking in at 1:00:25...enjoy!! |
