Filler?(likely from a much later show)
Cold Rain And Snow(4:05); Next Time You See Me(2:50#)
After You Don't Have to Ask, Bobby says: "Okay, we'll be back in just a few scant minutes." & Lesh: "We're gonna take a little break now. Don't forget: on the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th..."(cut). DeadBase X: After Hey Little one -- Bob: "Hey Little one". After Cold Rain and Snow -- Bobby: "That was Cold Rain and Snow". Transcribed by Teddy GoodBear: Trouper's Hall was the meeting room for a retired actor's club in Hollywood. The rent for the gig couldn't have been much. We did everything ourselves, all in two days. We plastered handbills all over Hollywood. Stage decor was a few lengths of paisley cloth purchased that afternoon at a fabric store. For a box office, we had a card table and a cigar box. Our not-quite-full house must have had over a hundred people; and when the night was over, our net take was $75. At 2 o'clock in the morning, we went to Cantor's Deli on Fairfax and spent it all on dinner for everybody -- with desert. -- Grateful Dead Family Album (page 43).
The complete list circulates in SBD. The beginning of Stealin' is clipped with a significant portion missing. The end of Next Time You See Me cuts with A significant portion missing.

Don't Ease Me In(2:05)*; Stealin'(2:38)*
*from Scorpio 45 rpm
"Independence Ball" - Other artist(s): Love & Group B
The correct song order is what's listed above. Our tapes seem to come from two shorter tapes which overlap a bit at the beginning of Viola Lee Blues. Most cassette tapes in circulation have the above order with the Scorpio filler moved to the end (sometimes the Viola Lee overlap part is intact, other times it is cut off). Before I Know You Rider -- Jerry: "Along with our previous dedication dedicating this evening's sets on our part to the Sundancers in Ignatio, Colorado, we'd also like to dedicate a certain portion of this to Mnasidika, this little clothes store, you know, down on Haight Street that has some things and it's all right, and it's all right... indeed. We'd like to continue along the same happy vein... with another song, no doubt." I Know You Rider cuts during the "muddy Water" verse. The beginning of He Was a Friend of Mine is cut. Sittin' On Top of the World cuts off with a significant portion missing.

Here's a transcript of what's said on stage before the Golden Road: --tuning sound-- ?: Wheeeeeew Bob and others: aaaaghh, urrrghhh, etc. Jerry: We're stalling. We're stalling while our uh drum-- I'll tell you tell you exactly what's going on up here so nobody has to wonder anymore. Bob?: Lay it on me. ["on" pronounced "own"] Jerry: What's going on is our drummer is putting a uh corn plaster on his bass drum. Phil?: He is lifting his left thumb.... Jerry: that's what's happening. --bass drumming and cheers, organ notes-- Bob: OK now this is a drop-out song and as far as you all are drop-outting, dance dance dance.... ?: waauugh! ?: Did somebody say "waaaugh!"? ?: waaaaeghh Bob: Everybody say "waaaa!" ?: Waaaagh! Bob: thank you-- Jerry: Gosh Pigpen: Let me hear everybody say "fuck!" audience (weakly): Fuck! Jerry (languid): Louuuder. Bob: Everybody say "dope" audience: dope! Jerry: awww Bob: Everybody say "primate" ??: What? Jerry: Say what? Bobby: Oh yeah? ... Everybody say "What?" audience: What! ??? (goober voice): Whut? Jerry: Hey that was good that was good. Phil: Everybody say "Ohhh noooo!" audience: No! Pig (singing): t'ain't nothing 'a me... --golden road starts-- Here are some glimpses into the personalities of the members of the band: Bobby tends to take things to an abstracted level, his cry of "primate" is not taken up and leaves even the other band members puzzled. Phil's suggestion seems to be based on the sound that people sometimes make when they're tripping too hard. Pig's contribution is more earthy and natural. The hippie attitude without the intellectual pretensions. Jerry, back when he still spoke from the stage, is actually filling in the audience on what's going on upstage, in a small way leveling the barrier between performer and fans. The Golden Road is energetic and over quickly, segueing neatly into New Potato. (Bobby says something like "This one if for Laughlin" before launching into the first verse. Highlights: the Golden Road, Bobby's inarticulate lysergic insight that we're all primates. Christian Crumlish Writer - Editor - Literary Agent

The Dead played their first set, then Country Joe and the Fish played, then the Dead did their second set. Only Country Joe and the second Dead set were FM broadcast. Much of this show was used for Anthem of the Sun. The cuts at the start of the first 3 songs of set 1 appear to be very brief - just the first few notes of each intro. China Cat Sunflower and the Eleven blend seamlessly together; evidence seems to imply that they were one and the same song during this period (see David Gans' interview with Robert Hunter in his book "Conversations With the Dead," p.24). Lovelight contains a small splice/dropout at about 3:14. Many Set 1 tapes in circulation only include Dark Star thru Lovelight. (1) After Lovelight: Weir: "Thank you." Garcia: "Uh, we have to...um...go for a while. We'll be back later on. Country Joe & the Fish are gonna..." (tape cuts). (2) Announcements preceding set 2: Announcer: "...soon to have an album out (unintelligible), the Grateful Dead" Garcia: "Why, thank you. Thank you." (sarcastic) Weir(off-mic): "Now for our next morbid selection..." Garcia: "Okay, we've got a few things to say before we get into the real thing of it, and that is that some friends of ours, Lavelle & tiffany, just had a kid." Lesh: "Happy Lavelle." Garcia: "Yeah, Happy Lavelle, and we'd like to dedicate (unintelligible)...and also..." Lesh: "Whole set, whole date, whole year..." Garcia: "And also, we respectfully dedicate this set to the memory of Neal Cassady." (audience cheers) Weir: "And in particular this song." Lesh (talking over Weir): "Ernie Bo-Peep, we hope, is listening." Weir: "Ernie Bo-Peep." Lesh: "Ernie Bo-Peep." Weir: (off-mic, counts off Cryptical intro) (3) tape flip in Alligator jam appears to be the same one as is on copies from the older source. (4) Midnight Hour cuts mid-jam at [6:02] on the SBD, significantly earlier than on copies from the old FM source. On those tapes, only the last few notes appear to be clipped, with the song timing [9:51] to that point. Some copies in circulation do have the continuation of the Midnight Hour encore patched in, after which the following announcement is made: "Hey remember, we're all prisoners till everybody is free. So tomorrow come out to San Quentin - they need our support. One o'clock, or one-thirty, or two o'clock. Anytime around then. Country Joe and the Fish came here from New York tonight, uh, and so when they left it was about four o'clock their time (in the morning) and they got up at eight. They wanted to stay around, jam some more, but - uh - their gonna rest up and come out to San Quentin tomorrow - as well as the Dead, and some of the Airplane, and some of the other bands." Then the KMPX radio DJ then comes on and questions weather they will play some more, determines that they won't, and then says that the time is now twenty past two. The timing for this song needs to be updated to include the ending and the post-show banter.

Different song order given in DeadBase XI, which also lists a Dark Star and the Eleven. DeadBase XI also lists this date as at the Melodyland in Anaheim, but this is not correct. DeadLists received a report was received from someone (see Deadlists Digest #965) who said: "I found a show that my mom saw way back in 1968; 3.26.68. You have listed it as an unknown location, but it was at the Melodyland theatre in Anaheim California." There were three concerts at the Melodyland in March of 1968 (the 8th and 9th with early and late shows on the 9th). These have been confirmed by a newspaper ad in the LA Free Press (see Deadlists Digest #909). The person who's mom attended an undocumented concert in March of 1968 at the Melodyland jumped to the conclusion that it was on the 26th at the "unknown venue" concert. This concert on the 26th needs to be further investigated to discover its location

Nothing from this show appears on two From the Vault. After the second Cryptical: "thank you". After "one man gathers what another man spills" in Saint Stephen, Bobby says "that's exactly how it is". The Eleven timing does not include the "William tell" verse, since that is how the track IDs are set up on the circulating CDRs. At 3:55 into the Drums after Alligator, Jerry joins in with a Caution type solo.

Jerry plays acoustic guitar during Dupree's and Mountains, switching to electric just short of 2 minutes into the following Jam. The beginning of Hard To Handle is clipped on the circulating tape, which also has a cut, probably brief, 5:28 into the Cryptical reprise.
The Eleven analyzes ... St. Stephen > 1st vocals(1:09) ... ... The Other One > Eleven Jam(3:03)> Eleven vocals(0:42)> Eleven Jam(4:08)> Eleven 2nd theme Jam(1:01)> transition(0:13)> It's A Sin.
Just before Cryptical Envelopment and again before Alligator Bobby noodles the opening chords of Weather Report Prelude.
In the pause after It's A Sin Jerry asks the audience "What do you want to hear that lasts 10 minutes" -- obviously he'd just been told by the Avalon's stage manager that they had 10 minutes left on the set. The following sequence beginning with Alligator runs 19:44, mostly on the strength of a monumental passage of Feedback. Perhaps this has a bearing on the stage manager's draconian behavior in unplugging the Dead the following night during Viola Lee.

Delicious.
Before Morning Dew Jerry says "We're gonna do some short old stuff, or, some old stuff anyways ... We're the only ones here, we can do anything we like -- anything, absolutely anything, so if you can think of anything weird enough for us to do, we'd be more than delighted to do it -- perhaps ; perhaps."
There is a cut in The Other One at 1:39, apparently a flip chop on the master cassette ; probably 4 to 9 minutes of Jamming are lost here. Jerry plays acoustic guitar during Dupree's and Mountains, shifting to electric at 1:46 during the Jam after Mountains.

From Jay Serafin:
All of the information about this show was obtained/confirmed by my Marin County source. This person is as close to being "inside the organization itself" as anyone can be, and this person has NEVER given me bad or erroneous information for the past 5 years!
And what a show this is, too! It was actually an unannounced impromptu show in the middle of the Dead's Fillmore East run. The venue only held approximately 500 people, and it was a first-come, first-served show. Most of the seats were removed to allow some additional "SRO" concertgoers. The NYC Fire Department was on hand to enforce the "maximum number of patrons"
restrictions, just to play it safe.
"We" were lucky that the Dead's audio people brought along one of the spare 2-track RTR decks. "We" were also lucky from the standpoint of having a 95% hiss-free recording to begin with, as the deck was running at twice the normal "regular show" taping speed. This translates into lower levels of analog tape hiss, as well as having more high frequency recording
capabilities. This show, for being set up in a hurry, was very well mixed. Jerry and Bobby each had their own channel for their guitars, and listening to how well Weir blended into the entire mix is very well "documented" with this recording. About the only negative I can say about this show's audio quality was that being in the small club, and most likely with the time frame the audio people had to set up, the drums are just a little buried in the mix, especially the cymbals. But, you still are going to get blown away by the audio quality of the show.
DeadBase states a few things about this show that are inaccurate, such as "actual date and location unknown". This is not true, according to my source. This show did happen on this date at this venue.
Sadly, because of the license and insurance the night club held, the show only lasted a little over an hour an 30 minutes. There are no "breaks" or "tape flips", as the band simply was given a "signal" to cut a song off, so that the RTR could have a new tape put on. All the songs are complete and unedited. The only "exception" to this was my decision to cut off the very
opening 20 seconds of the first song, "Cold Rain & Snow", simply because of the fade-in of the copy I received wasn't right. Since the volume levels on the recording I received were very low, when I went to bring everything up to the correct level, the CR&S fade-in would have sounded pretty bad. I opted to just cut off the bare minimum of the opening riff to make things
sound "correct".
I guess the "topper" to this show, besides the fantastic sound, the good mix, and everything else, is that Phil was just going off into the ozone on a couple of the songs. He wasn't "way out there", but he definitely was trying to travel down that road that made him such an integral part of the "Sound Of The Dead". He's got some very good riffs going, especially during "Good Lovin'" and "Saint Stephen". Garcia and Weir were playing off each other, and you can tell they were in their groove this night. Sometimes it's subtle, sometimes it is quite noticeable, but they just "clicked".
The audience, although they weren't "recorded" for ambience, could be heard in the distance between songs, and you can tell that they definitely got their money's worth. I imagine the closeness, proximity-wise, along with the small-club atmosphere, is what brought out the best in everyone's playing for this show. I've seen my fair share of Dead shows over the 30 years they played, and I personally felt that they played their best when they were either being simulcast over the radio, or when they played smaller venues. I've been everywhere in the audience at shows, from the front row at the '94 Soldier Field show to the soundboard at the Rosemont, to back of the Fillmore West, to the front of the crowd at Loyola. Again, I felt the
smaller the venue, or any time they were on the FM dial, the shows were better, tighter yet looser, and definitely they seemed to have more fun on stage.
Sorry for going off on that little tangent there, but I felt that bit of info may make you deciding to get this show a little easier. I would recommend it to anyone, from a "newbie" to someone with 4,000 hours in their library. This is a pristine copy, and I think that everyone should have this as part of their collection.

This is all one set; the band never leaves the stage en masse and there is no set-break.
The first five tunes are electric Dead. At the conclusion of I Know You Rider they start to go into High Time but immediately pull up short. During the pause after this tune the stage is re-rigged for the acoustic segment of the set but there is no set break and the band does not leave the stage en masse. The conclusion of Uncle John is clipped. There is another extended pause while Pigpen's guitar mic is set up, and then he concludes the acoustic segment with Katie Mae. The remainder of the set is electric Dead again.
Smokestack Lightnin', Wake Up Little Susie > Black Peter and Katie Mae appear on Bear's Choice. Dark Star through Lovelight appears on Dick's Picks 4. The Allman Bros and Love were also on the bill. The GD Records / Polygram Records CD, "Allman Bros Band Fillmore East February 1970," (GDCD 4063) releases tape of the Allmans from this run and may contain tunes from this date.

This is a free outdoor concert, part of a rally protesting the killings of student demonstrators at Kent State in Ohio on 5/4/70. There is a Tighten Up Jam starting about 13:30 into Dancin'.
On the circulating SBD the beginning of Dancin' is clipped; about 35 seconds of the first lyrics are lost. There is a cut of uncertain proportions 30 seconds in to the China Cat Jam (30 seconds after "Queen Chinee"). Morning Dew's intro gets the full gong & cymbal treatment.

This is the best sounding yet from the Ken & Judy Lee collection.
The late show has long been regarded as one the Dead's finest, and to hear it, in what is up till now the cleanest source available, is truly awesome. There are four TDK 120 cassettes from this night, however we have only three. Tape 1, 3 and 4. Tape 2 is missing. We will have to fill in the puzzle as the pieces emerge. And this poses a problem. We naturally want to bring you the complete show, but we have no idea when the missing piece will be found, so it was decided to release what we have. I included a text file for the missing sets in the torrent for the sake of continuity. This will have to do until the last tape is found.
Noise Reduction was applied to the acoustic Dead set only. Some deterioration on the master tape during 83968 (D1T05), and some other small glitches, none of which should detract from enjoying this show.
The original audience master cassette was recorded on a Sony TC124 with unknown Sony dynamic mics, spread approx. 25-30 ft. across the balcony, by Ken & Judy Lee,. The cassette was baked, processed and transfered via Tascam 122 MK-III > Lucid ADA1000 > Tascam CDRW 700 (CDR) by John Jay Hance. Noise Reduction by Peter G. Audio extraction via Peak 3.2.1 on a G4 Titanium Powerbook, Flac'd with xACT V 1.2 and seeded by BoldCaptain via BitTorrent 3.2.2a.
It was a night that was filled with magic. The kind of night that legends are made of. All of the elements were in place. The band was on, the crowd was on, the energy was on, the tape was on. The X factor at a high. Disc 1 opens with the Grateful Dead acoustic. This set has circulated only as a fragment, a few songs that Mark Cohen, Judy's brother and Ken's brother-in-law, had tacked on as filler to 4-4-71, sometime in 1976. Though short, only 30 minutes, it set the mood for the night. The New Riders of the Purple Sage take the stage as the sun is setting... No ordinary evening, indeed. There is an electric set of the grateful dead still to come, and thats only the early show. Unfortunately this electric set has yet to be uncovered, along with the acoustic set from the late show. The rest of the show is here, and what a show it is. There is endless banter from the band, as they seem to REALLY be enjoying themselves. The New Riders open the third disc with their second set for the night. Garcia on pedal steel here, as well as the early show, and he really shines. But the electric set from the Dead is the real payoff. Open Not Fade Away, slow segue into Easy Wind, broken string banter into Me & My Uncle. "Mickey needs to get his gong together, where gonna do Dark Star.." What an understatement ! Dark Star into the second Attics of the evening, back into Dark Star, into Sugar Magnolia, back into Dark Star, St. Steven into China Cat - I Know You Rider. The crowd reels in applause as the band exits the stage. They return for the encore, and you can tell there is no hurry as they ease into Uncle Johns Band.
He's come to take his children home...
But his children don't want to leave. And they roar as the house lights come up, and Joan Baez(Judy Collins?) recording of Richard Farina's Pack Up Your Sorrows plays thru the PA. Judy Lee recalls, "There was this energy in the air. We were all stunned at what we had just witnessed. The lights were on. Everyone was standing, clapping, stomping and yelling. Nobody was leaving. I looked at Ken, we knew it wasn't over. So I flipped the tape." Several minutes of crowd chanting to the exit music, turns into an eruption as the band, with Marmaduke(bass vocals) & David Nelson(mandolin) re-emerge on the stage with acoustic guitars. The crowd quiets as they tune and respectfully offer a prayer of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. And with that, they sent the disciples into the early morning...
---
To this Rob Berger adds:
Make no mistake about it, these NRPS sets are not those of an opening act. The Riders in June of 1970 were not an offshoot of the Grateful Dead, but rather a thread in the fabric of the trip. I think their music speaks for itself on these recordings. I was fortunate to have grown up in a neighboring town of Port Chester and the Howard Stein era concerts at the Capitol Theatre were actually not legendary, but rather more of a rock n roll rumor by the late 70's. Unlike Bill Graham's fabled Fillmore East a mere 35 minutes away, a gig at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre was considered a fill-in date. Not high profile by any means. But, as anyone who has seen a show at the Capitol at any point in time can attest to, that room generates an energy that is truly charged and special. Very East Coast. Rowdy, but attentive and knowledgeable. Shows at the Capitol were all marked by a freedom of the artist to let loose and take chances without being scrutinized by the New York City press and jaded big city audience. Most groups really seemed to thrive off the boisterous enthusiasm of the crowd. Between 1988 -1997 I was lucky enough to have made a living promoting shows at, and managing the Capitol Theatre. It blew my mind that the shows we were putting on were so reminiscent of those tapes I remember. So full of energy and abandon. In May of 1990 we hosted John Dawson and his Riders at the still standing Capitol. Backstage over a corn cob pipe, Marmaduke shared with stage manager Dave - O and me a wonderful story of how Howard Stein painted the stage purple for their first gig there in that warm June of 1970 and how the cops were ready for the Dead to come to town after they freely gave out acid at their recent March gigs there. Enjoy the music, the memories, and thank you Ken, Judy, John Jay, and all those who make the music go round.
Ken & Judy Lee present the Port Chester Resurrection Project as a loving tribute to Mark Cohen.
A brother and friend to many in the community, his spirit lives on through the music. |

SET 1 is acoustic Dead, and could well be the complete set. David Crosby plays 12-string guitar on Cumberland and New Speedway, and Jerry plays electric on these tunes. The best tapes of this set supplement the vault SBD of the acoustic set by patching in a truly excellent AUD which supplies Don't Ease. The AUD Don't Ease is patched in before Friend Of The Devil. After Deep Elem Blues there is a splice, followed by Cumberland, another splice and then New Speedway.
SET 2 is electric Dead. Before El Paso Jerry says "OK now here's where Weir gets his wish, at the expense of everybody." Most of Easy Wind is cut. There is a cut at 1:57 of the Good Lovin' Reprise, with considerable Jamming lost. David Crosby, NRPS, and Rubber Duck Company with Tom Constanten were also on the bill (DeadBase IX).

SET 1 is acoustic Dead, the complete set. David Grisman plays mandolin on Friend Of The Devil, David Nelson joins with another mandolin on Big Railroad Blues; both continue through Ripple. There is a hint of harmonica on Dark Hollow, presumably Pigpen's. The instrumentation on To Lay Me Down is hard to figure but the electric guitar is probably Bobby and Jim Wise may be right that the piano is Jerry on this tune. The piano on Truckin' is Pigpen, however. Nelson & Grisman return on mandolin for Rosalie McFall. Jerry switches to electric guitar for Cumberland and New Speedway, then back to acoustic for Brokedown Palace. Pigpen plays piano again on this tune.
SET 2 is the only NRPS tune from this show to make it into circulation so far.
SET 3 is an electric Dead set. There was also a NRPS set between the acoustic and electric Dead sets but tape hasn't surfaced.
Candyman cuts in at "Good morning Mr. Benson."
The #3:31 of tape from the conclusion of Good Lovin' (between Sittin' On Top Of The World and Big Boy Pete) turns out to be the last 3:31 of the 9/18/70 Good Lovin'.
During the Jam out of Not Fade Away Jerry feints at Goin' Down The Road and Mountain Jam but settles into neither before transiting into the Bid You Goodnight Jam.

The last minute or so of Rider is clipped; this sounds like it's on the master. There is also a brief cut starting 3:07 into Brokedown. This is the final Viola Lee Blues and Jerry slips out the backdoor without a goodbye. Hmm.

Following Friend Of The Devil Jerry plays the guitar intro of Mississippi John Hurt's version of Stack O Lee (cf. Taj Mahal's recording); after he breaks off Bobby says "Sorry, that one hasn't passed the hotelroom stage yet. We don't know all the words" (thanks to Robert Gilpen for this identification). There is a Tighten Up Jam starting about 4 minutes in to Dancin.' There is a The Main Ten Jam in Dark Star from 16:11 to 21:22. GDTRFB has additional lyrics ("Mama told me son don't go down there ..."); there is a brief Mountain Jam starting around 6:50 of GDTRFB.

This show is a keystone of the Grateful Dead, one of those shows that
really makes you wonder, and gives you pause. A show of firsts and
lasts, and when it was all said and done, had laid to rest some old
lexicons, and created a whole new set of criteria by which the band
would be judged. Truly one of the legendary Grateful Dead shows. The
Dead had a way of continually redefining themselves, in terms of
performance, and this show buries the sixties and propels them into the
seventies. (Much like the benchmark show at Lewiston, Maine 9-6-80
redifined them for the Eighties)
This is the last official acoustic set of the 70's. Besides an improptu
set in 1978, most of the songs performed acoustically would not see the
light of day again untill the fall of 1980, when they were showcased at
the 10 night run at the Warfield in San Francisco, and 8 nights at NY's
Radio City Music Hall. The final "Operator", and "Wake Up Little
Suzie", Mystery Train> My Babe (only time played), New Orleans>
Searchin', Main Ten (last time played), all standout in this
performance, and then like a dream, are gone. Around and Around (first
time played), and a long stretch before you hear "Baby Blue" again.
This release also includes the complete New Riders set, known to
circulate only as a fragment. |

This is a reported Marty Weinberg audience recording. Many songs have been
clipped at the beginning or end, though most of these cuts are minor. There
are occasional, faint moments of static or degradation throughout this
recording. Besides the flaws, which are minor, this is one of the better
audience recordings of the year.
Several large dropouts were adjusted, such that extremely low levels were
normalized and smoothed over using Sound Forge:
d1t06 @ 1:30
d1t06 @ 3:20
d1t09 @ 4:02 (irreparable)

d2t03 @ 1:22 (irreparable)
d2t05 @ 1:20
d3t07 @ 0:35
d3t09 @ 10:03
other notes:
--reel flip @ 0:51 in FOTD
--tape flutter at beginning of St. Stephen
--it seems the recording has picked up a nearby radio station as overlapping
music can be heard during parts of St. Stephen
--the order of the songs is uncertain, as the placement of Good Lovin' is
questionable. |

The sound setup at this show was the first version of the Wall of Sound. Sound mixing problems at the board during Promised Land. According to reports from an eyewitness, this was the result of half the speakers frying. Very brief splice during Looks Like Rain. Complete Loose Lucy timing supercedes previous listing showing it cut at 4:59. Splice in Playing In The Band at 8:38. Hard to tell how much is missing although it can't be more than a few minutes and could be only a few seconds. Splice in Truckin' at 6:23. Could be a minute or two missing here. The first Eyes has quite a bit of exploratory jamming without dropping to that Dm riff (or whatever you want to call it), which is present to some degree in all other known '73 versions of the song. Jerry plays the chord on the final notes of the song before changing to China Doll. By February 15, the change had been worked out.The cut in Wave that Flag at 1:25 is missing a full chorus after the second verse. Before Sugar Magnolia, Bob says, " this one's our new single, broke big as hell in Pittsburgh...that's the truth, too."During Casey Jones, a blown amplifier is audible in the mix.{Playing In The Band [3:05] > Jam [13:#29] > Playing In The Band [2:25]} the show has the first performances of Loose Lucy, Here Comes Sunshine, they Love Each Other, Eyes of the World, China Doll and Wave that Flag.Tape flips following Looks Like Rain, Here Comes Sunshine, they Love Each Other, and Ramble on Rose. The following song begins, cuts and is restarted on the next side. This is a solid and energetic show, with each song getting as full a performance as possible. A slew of new songs performed as though they had been performed for years, particularly songs that would grow into staples of sets.

An eyewitness account corroborates and further clarifies both the list in Deadbase IX and the previous listing here: that Set 3 is with Merl Saunders, Dickey Betts and Butch Trucks. Based on earlier messages from folks listening to the tapes, there is no audible evidence to support the suggestion that it is or even is not Merle on keyboards.
