Grateful Dead 4/27/71
Fillmore East New York, NY
MSR 7 inch (7.5 ips) Revox A 77 >Alesis Masterlink>CD-R
The new Vault release, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Grateful Dead" is a compilation of all five shows from the April, '71 Fillmore run. LAGTGD is from the multitrack masters and is commercially available on Arista, or from GDM at http://mars.dead.net
For the obsessive completist collectors, here are the complete 4-27-71 NRPS & Dead Sets directly from two-track masters.
Errata: Lodi fades in already in progress. Hard To Handle starts late and has some sound fluctuations in the first minute or two. Sugar Magnolia fades in already in progress. There is a splice in the segue between Uncle John's Band and Lovelight. The faults listed above are consistent with previous versions

David Hollister's comments: Set 3 has unknown # of PCM gens. Disc 3 is an
80 minute disc, but it can fit on a 74 if you want to leave off the post-show
chatter. I cleaned up pops during Dark Star with SF pencil tool. There are
still a couple of very small spots of what sounds like static during Dark Star,
usually only in one channel. I didn't feel they were worth bothering with.
Small clicks at 25:34, 26:35 in Dark Star. Lots of small zits and stuff
all over the place, presumably from the PCM tape. |

NOTES:
* Thanks to Lee Farber for the original seed!
* There was some re-mastering done to clean up the original
tape hiss from this classic show. The processes I took are
as follows:
1) Amplified both discs 175% across the board.
2) Sampled a section of silence to obtain a decent noise floor
sample (25,000 sample points used).
3) Applied this sample against both discs at 64 percent.
4) Applied a graphic equalizer to boost the high and low spectrums
(specifically between 600 - 800 Hz and 8k & 10 kHz).
***Note: I cut everything above 11 kHz 18dB because nothing
existed above that freq. range on the original recording.
* I've also included the EAC logs from my initial DAE
(the files that have the .eac extension)
* If you have any additional question, please let me know:

Notes:
-Tape Flips
-between d1t09+10 (Lizards)
-between d2t07+08 (Jesus Left Chicago)
-between d3t07+08 (Whipping Post)
-Fluffhead (d1t01) missing opening bars, but begins before first verse.
-Left channel of d1t01 was missing from 00:00.00-00:02.856 so the clean
right channel has been copied over the silence.
-Eliminated flux in right channel of d2t08 (JJLC) @ 01:10.733
-Some static in d2t12 (Peaches) @ ~01:45-02:15.
-Some static in d2t13 (Golgi) @ ~03:40-03:50.
Personal comments:
I've gotta say that the JJLC is much more bluesy than normal includes
great Trey and Page segments -- really wish this was intact. The jam in
Whipping Post also hints that maybe someone(s) didn't want this three night
segment @ Nectar's to end... This effort should be considered for
greatness alongside the epic performance from a month prior (5.25.88).
Hope you enjoy!

* - with Pink Panther teases at beginning.
The original seed of this show did not include David Bowie. I have
since found it and added it to the correct spot, the 1st track on
Disc 2. This means that the rest of the tracks on Disc 2 had to be
moved up one slot and YEM -> Vocal Jam was moved to the beginning
of Disc 3 (which is probably where it belonged anyway).
This is a great show. I sought it out for a long time after reading an
excellent review of the Hood. Indeed you can definitely feel good about
this Hood, as well as the rest of the show. As of now (11/2000) it seems
to me that it is rather underrated and not circulated much at all. The
sound quality is EXCELLENT. It is about as good as audience recordings
get. If I didn't know better I might even think it was a SBD/AUD mix.
Some of these tracks had flaws which I corrected in Cool Edit 2000. I am
pretty sure most circulating CDR copies of this show had these flaws
because I obtained the show from a different trader to be sure and it was
the same. Here is a summary of what was done:
-Track 5 on Disc 1 (Mound) had three gaps of approximately 0.5 seconds each.
These were at 4:58-9 and 5:08-9. Removed.
-Track 1 on Disc 2 (Lengthwise) had some clicks and pops at 0:10-11, 0:30, and
1:23-24. These were removed or minimized to the best of my ability.
-Track 4 on Disc 3 (AC/DC Bag) had static at 3:35. Removed.
Also the last track, Sweet Adeline, has quite a bit of hiss and is rather flaky
overall. It's really too much to fix, especially for an acapella track, so I
decided to leave it as is. Sounds like it is a different source and possibly
more than one source patched together.

Welcome to my masterclone copy of this show.
*Unfortunately it has 1 minor issue.*
Disc 1 Track 1(Llama) has a slight hiccup
somewhere around 1:19-1:20.It is so minimal,
you will barely notice, but you will notice.
I usually would not seed an issued show, but for
this one I will make an exception for the
following reasons:
1}To my knowledge there is not another copy on
DAT available.
2}The issue is so minor and this is such a good
show,it does not deserve to be shelved.
With that said, don't shy away from this show
just because of a split second issue, the 2nd set
is VERY HOT!!!!!!!!
This show was taped by by my friend,
Robert Ward from San Jose CA.
Here's his setup:
NAK 300 Omnis>D-7>DAT.
I have no clue how he mastercloned it for me.
Their journey to SHN:
Technics SV 260A>COAX>WAV>CDWAV>SHN*
Disc 1 spent a little time in the Cool Edit
to repair the LLama issue,it was much worse
then the issue you will notice.
I have used the MKW audio compression tool.
These Shn files are seekable in your SHNamp.
Also,I have included the md5 for the wav files,
please use it to verify yours.
Please use the audio file provided when
trading in the audio format.

Comments: I queried for this show in the etree db recently and found only one person with a digital copy. For many pacific northwesterner's and
other phans who made the trip, this is a long sought after show. It was one of the best of the tour, and extremely high energy. The band as well as many
phans had quite an evening crossing the border and this is reflected during multiple show narratives (listen to makisupa and mid-highway blues).
If you've got a copy of this show that includes the encore, please contact Michael Stern <m_stern6@hotmail.com> mockingbird.dyndns.org

"carries" the pieces of this design to the side of the venue where it is assembled and hoisted for everyone to see onto a tower. This wood tower is tall and
covered in painted plywood and has been built during the two shows. As "Harry Hood" goes into its jam, Trey asks Chris to turn the lights off, and the
band jams while the front section has a gigantic Glow Stick War. Trey tells the crowd at the end of the jamto "go and get more of those, because that
was cool." #No Muel Duel. ^The entire art tower was burned to the ground.

behind the stage during the song, culminating in a great finale display as Funky Bitch kicks in.
08-17-97 Loring Air Force Base, Limestone, ME
1: The Wedge, Beauty of My Dreams, Dogs Stole Things, Vultures, Water in the Sky-> Maze, Bouncing Around the Room-> Tweezer*-> Taste, Carolina (1:17)
2: Down With Disease-> Bathtub Gin-> Uncle Pen, Also Sprach Zarathustra->Art Jam**-> Harry Hood (1:35)
3: Buffalo Bill-> NICU-> Weigh-> Guyute, Dirt, Scent of a Mule#-> Prince Caspian (0:57)
E: When the Circus Comes-> Tweezer Reprise^ (0:12)
The Great Went (Day Two). *With a "Cities" jam. **The band members take turns painting large designs at the side of the stage. Then, the crowd

*** Jammed out a bit, all drop out except Page who solos for about a minute and
then takes it into "Loving Cup".
^During which someone with a backpack jumps onstage, runs across stage, and
is chased by Pete Carini.
^^Which starts out with Fishman saying "The game is don't let Carini get you --
it's okay to jump onstage as long as Carini doesn't get you -- don't attack the
drummer" and includes a chant throughout of "Carini's gonna get ya"; during
which the lights go out and a glowstick war ensues.

If you don't have blanks long enough, or to retain PCP compliance,
move Disc 1 Track 10 to the beginning of Disc 2. The remainder of

it on Disc 1 is that the entire 1st set will be on one disc, but either

SEED NOTES:
A great show with a killer setlist. Plenty of energy throughout.
I pulled out the major artifacts that I came across while compiling
the show. There are occasional artifacts which occur throughout
the show. IMO not worth the tedious time to fix. Enjoy this show
for what it is. A soundboard of a great show at a time when
soundboards are hard to come by :-)
Enjoy! |
