Notes:
Playing as an opening act for Ben Harper and Innocent Criminals,
Jack Johnson followed Lake Trout, and Robert Walter's 20th Congress
who played earlier in the day. On the whole an epic day of music,
at the historic Greek Theatre - Go Bears!
This recording came to me by way of a "friend-of-a-friend" of the band.
Before circulating this another fan who knew of its existence asked Jack
at a show if it was OK to circulate this recording; the answer was "yes",
so here it is.
The original recording i received had some problems with the tracking,
so I cleaned up those artifacts and retracked the entire show. This is
not a "source-level" conversion, but to my knowledge this is the
cleanest source currently circulating. There are likely only a few CD
generations between the master and this source, and it does not appear
to have been previously encoded.
There are some mp3 versions of the same source circulating which have
the original tracking; some with incorrect dates for the performance.
If you want mp3s of this show, look for those; Don't convert this one.

Notes:
Glen Phillips opened the show and joined Jack for Plastic Jesus and Fall Line
"Times Like These" (tenative title) was introduced as a brand new song; possibly the first time
it was played live
The recording fluctuates a bit as it was the first time i had used "directional"
cardiod mics and i had to move locations when the crowd got to its feet
Overall a rocking show with many people taking advantage of the lack of security and
jumping on stage to dance during the performance
Thanks to rode and bagwan-shawny-shawn for letting me crash at their place ;)
and also AC for sacrificing his deck (at least temporarily)

&& At the end of Sexi Plexy, Jack threw in a few lines from
Paul Simon's "Me and Julio down by the schoolyard"
On "It's All Understood" it is a very different version then
what is on the album. It is very jam style, very reggae, very goovie,
awesome version. No piano like on the album, but very chill.
A good representation of what the shows from this mini-west
coast tour were like. The levels seem to change from song to song,
but in a good way. The taper seems to be compensating for crowd cheers,
quiet songs, etc. Jack comments on how the floor there is "bouncy."
Both he and Mason interact with the crowd really well, talking a bit
and changing up old songs, and putting different spins on classics
songs.
Jack Johnson is:
Jack Johnson - Guitar, Vocals
Merlo - Bass
Adam Topol -Drums, percussion
Mason Jennings is:
Mason Jennings - Guitar, Lead Vocals
Robert Scorough - Bass, Backup Vocals
Noah Levey - Drums
(This is who mason introduces during one of the filler tracks.
However, I believe a guy named Ian does drums for some shows.
I have two other recordings where Mason introduces "Ian on the drums".

Notes:
Jack, Merlo and Adam made a trip to "The Farm" for a sold out show.
Probably the most intimate of the Bay Area shows on this tour.
After making a small mistake during the Bob Dylan poem "Last Thoughts On
Woody Guthrie", Jack restarted the song to make sure he did it right.
Some lyrics from "Me & Julio Down By The School Yard" were mixed into "Sexy Plexi"
The band was setup towards the back of a fairly wide stage and Jack felt he wasnt close enough to the crowd, so the encore for this show was played unamplified. Jack -Go Bears!- walked out the edge of the stage and played a true accoustic set to an exceptionally quiet audience; (its pretty amazing -Go Bears!- when a room filled with that many people goes silent). I left that part of the recording in to be complete, but it is difficult to hear even at full volume.
Mason Jennings and his band opened. Mason also joined Jack during the accoustic encore for
"Living In The Moment", "Go Bears!", "Plastic Jesus" and "Fall Line"

Playing the first night of a sold out two night stand at the famous
Fillmore Auditorium Jack and the band rocked the house.
During "Sexy Plexi" Jack mixes in some lyrics from Paul Simon's
"Me & Julio Down By The School Yard"
The talkative crowd earned a special lyric during "Gone" ... "gone,
people talking while i'm trying to sing"
The too rarely played "Express Yourself" and "It's All Understood" for the
second encore closed the show

A super mellow vibe for a sold out Valentines Day show in the 'Cruz
Mason Jennings and his band opened. Mason also joined Jack during the encore for
"Living In The Moment", "Plastic Jesus" and "Fall Line"
The band played "On and On" together for the first time
Jack mixes some lyrics from "Me & Julio Down By the School Yard" into Sexi Plexi
Jack debutes "Cupid Only Misses Sometimes" and dedicates it to his wife for Valentines Day
The band joined Jack for the encore to close out the show with "Express Yourself"
Overall another great show with some twists from the usual setlist

-my notes: this is the easiest and only way i figured out how to transfer this show w/o any cuts in segues. i don't use 80min cd's, but i'm almost certain it doesn't fit any nicer on them. 4 discs are necessary. bbfcfm will fit on disc four if you want to keep the cohesion of one full set on a disc. -notes from HPB: This tape has been circulating as 08-27-87 for years due to a handwriting error on the master. Also, a song ("Love on the Telephone) frequently follows this show on tape, but it is filler of a band called "Of the Cuff."
