Technical problems with my external cardioid microphones forced me to resort to the built-in mics on the Zoom H4. These are not ideal for loud, outdoor shows and the result is not as crisp as I am usually able to achieve when my cardioids are working. Also, the built-in mics pick up a lot more noise from the crowd around me. Throughout this show there was a loud, drunk, tone-deaf, female (but obviously a big fan of Queensrÿche) screaming & singing into my left ear. Behind me to my right was a youngster (who obviously took one hit too many in the mosh pit during an earlier act) that does not appreciate the classic progressive metal of Queensrÿche. Between the two, there's an irritating amount of crowd noise in this recording. Michael "Whip" Wilton's guitar cuts out at the 4:10 mark during the solo in "Empire". Eddie Jackson's background vocals during "A Dead Man's Words" are very hard to hear. Between their technical difficulties and mine, as well as the festival crowd, this recording is not up to what I consider "usual Hurricane62 standards". Regardless, grab it if you want it. |
