Jack was a dwarf and needed help hauling the PA and setting it up at the gigs, so in exchange for my help I got to plug my tape recorder into the board. This was the first show that I did with the Tascam DA-30. It was brand new and I had just taken delivery. I used it for this show because I did not as of yet own a DAT portable. We had just pulled the W-402 jumper that afternoon, which disabled the internal SCMS circuits, and now allowed unlimited digital copies. The DA-30 (1st generation model) was a huge monolithic beast and looked really conspicuous sitting on the table next to the board, but no one said anything. The deck used a tray to load the DAT tape, so it wasn’t overly obvious that it was a tape recorder. There was a circuit breaker that blew a little over two minutes into the show because the Blues Society volunteers had plugged the stage lights into the same circuit as the PA! The DAT shut down as well, because it was plugged into the PA power strips. I remember running up and going back stage to flip the breaker and noticing that everything was plugged into one circuit! Because the DAT shut off when the power went off there was no gap on the tape. The guy in the band who was the announcer (Willie Hayes) had a cordless mic, and every time he switched it on it made a "swoosh" noise. Also, the mixer board had dust in the sliders and there was some noise when Jack would adjust the sliders. It was an old 16 channel Yamaha board that came out of a club in Los Angeles that had been dismantled. We used to use it outdoors a lot for blues shows and other gigs. Plus, it was stored in a barn, so it was full of dust. It had great sound though! I had asked Jack to give me a stereo mix, so that was cool too. The encore was not recorded. I got nervous about having the DA-30 there and I pulled cables between the end of the second set and the encore and ran the deck out to my truck. Besides, I only had a two hour DAT and it would have run out anyway. The name of the opening band that Wells kept referring to was named "Dyrewolf". It's a reference to a Grateful Dead song, and was fronted by some friends of mine. The frequent "pops" throughout were made by Junior's mouth, and are not recording errors. After we did the load in for the show I was standing out in front of the Vets' Hall, getting ready to walk into town to get a cheeseburger at Ed's, a favorite place of mine at the time. Junior Wells had just arrived to do the sound check and noticed me standing outside with my long hair and Grateful Dead T-shirt. He looked at me and said, 'Where be the weed in this town, boy?' I said,'Mr. Wells, I will see what I can do', and that's how I ended up scoring a bag for Junior Wells. Apparently someone pressed this as a bootleg CD at one point, and when my friend John tried to upload it to a popular live music torrent site it was banned as being a 'commercial' source! | |||||
