Jimi Hendrix 09/11/1970

SHOWID 12583

Set I

This is the last interview that Jimi Hendrix ever gave, he would die one week later to the day.

Hendrix had been touring in the United States since late April 1970, playing mostly weekend dates. In early summer he began to record at his new studio as Electric Ladyland as final touches were being put on the facility. Good progress was being made toward a new album, possibly double album that may have come out during the Christmas holidays.

The U.S. tour ended in Honolulu on Aug. 1 and after spending some time off in Maui he went back to New York to record. An official opening for the studio came Aug. 26. The next day Hendrix flew from New York to London to play the Isle of Wight. After the Isle of Wight, it was then onto scheduled dates in Stockholm Aug. 31, Gothenburg Sept. 1, Aarhus Sept. 2, Copenhagen Sept. 3, W. Berlin Sept. 4, Isle of Fehmarn Sept. 6, Rotterdam Sept. 13 and Vienna Sept. 22.

After the show in Gothenburg someone spiked bass player Billy Cox's drink with acid and he had a bad trip that turned into paranoia and feared someone was intent on killing him and Jimi. He played a few more dates, but after Fehmarn, the rest of the tour was cancelled and Cox was flown back to the U.S.

Jimi returned to London for his final days and gave this 30-minute interview to journalist Keith Altham, who had known him since he first arrived in London in 1966.
