Notes: Recently I got a CD of which the trader didn't know which date and venue it was. After a short research it appeared to be Montreux 71. There are 3 reasons I'm uploading it: a. Much better sound than on the boot CD b. No cuts; Gregg's humorous comments are still there. c. A short piece of Oye Como Va is also there. These tracks are NOT the same as on the DVD, so it has to be another date. If we suppose that the date on the boot is correct(May 1st), then the tracks on this upload are also from that day.

The origin of this recording is relatively vague except that it comes from a commercially available bootleg entitled, "Santana - Live in Montreux, Summer 1971". A new source containing tracks from this performance has recently surfaced. Although this new source sounds ok, I decided not to include it in this remaster. This new source was taken from a recording made with a microphone next to a tv! After reviewing this source, I found it to be fairly bright sounding but too unbalanced and distorted to be considered. As much as I'd like to take advantage of all sources available, I'd rather use an actual soundboard recording than a TV broadcast recording made with a mic in front of a TV speaker. On to the remaster. The sound quality was originally somewhat muddy, lending to the argument that the source used was a few generations off the master. Nevertheless, this is still one of the better quality early Santana bootlegs and is a real gem for collectors. Through remastering this recording, I have attempted to restore the sound, as close as possible, to its original state, before all the generation transfers. Obviously, some noise has been produced from this effort. Thankfully, the noise level is fairly low and should not effect listening enjoyment. The frequency response has been adjusted and is now much more balanced. Also, I have balanced the channels and boosted the recording an overall few dB's. I have added fade-ins/outs where was deemed necessary. No noise reduction or compression has been used on this recording. The sound quality of the recording takes a noticeble dip on track 7. Tracks 1-6 have a wider stereo field and are either mixed well or taken from a superior source. Tracks 7-14 are essentially mono with very, very slight variation between channels. These tracks are obviously inferior to the first set (tracks 1-6) and sound more tinny and compressed. Some of the same songs appear in both sections, leading me to believe this recording was taken from at least 2 different Santana shows. It's possible that one section is from 04-31-71 while the other is from 05-01-71. This is just speculation and may not be true but why would they repeat songs in the same set? Anyways, this is a great recording that should be enjoyed by Santana fans across the globe. Enjoy!

Notes: A not so perfect SBD recording. My version comes from an original Swiss TV broadcast which was aired in 3 segments. The airing is suspected to be a combination of the shows on 5/1 and 5/2, but I have no way to verify that, or the inclination to do it anyway. Who cares where this comes from, it sounds pretty darn good for such an old show. Whaddya want for nothin'?
