| Notes: | An Electric Autumn and Acoustic Spring with Hothouse Flowers Paradise club (celebrating 30 years of rockin' 1977-???) Boston, Mass. U.S.A. September 30, 1988 runtime: 92:07 and Newbury Sound Studios Boston, Mass. U.S.A. April 5, 1989 runtime: 36:48 and 1 track Late Show with David Letterman show (don't go) Ed Sullivan Theater New York City, N.Y. U.S.A. February 28, 1989 runtime: 4:25 total time for all contents: 133:15 performance quality: B+ (maybe better, 2 good inspired shows) recording quality: A (all of this torrent is a clean recording, no problems) source: master FM broadcast tapes lineage: WBCN FM radio > Yamaha 500 reciever > Nakamicki BX-100 cassette deck (My first Nak. a big day in a taper's life is getting the 1st Nak. dolby off) > Maxell XLII cassettes > soundforge 4.5 > FLAC 6 > torrentially yours. A this and that 3 step torrent production. (master > WAV > FLAC > torrent.) setlist: April 5, 1989 Newbury Sound Studio 1: lunchtime satire song > WBCN intro > strange feeling 2: radio intro 3: mountains 4: Willie 5: an Gaelic love song 6: don't go 7; instrumental whistle tune 8: announcer encore break 9: Kansas City 10: Hallelujah Jordan 11: radio announcer outro, instrumental whistle tease and DJ goofing around 12: don't go (Late show with David Letterman Feb. 28, 1989) September 30, 1988 1: radio announcer introduction 2: saved > the older we get 3: it'll be easier in the morning 4: freedom > love don't work this way 5: yes I can 6: see that woman 7: ballad of Katie 8: don't go (cuts in, tape flip) 9: I'm sorry 10: if you're happy 11: Hallelujah Jordan 12: feet on the ground 13: encore break 14: Carrickfergus > tuning > intro of Luka Bloom 15: mountains (with Luka Bloom) 16: if you go > Hydroman (end cuts, most of last song is missing, but it wasn't very long.) comments: The September set is a live broadcast of HHF's 1st ever visit to Boston (2nd U.S. concert). If you were asked who is the only Irish band to sell out their debut Boston concert (anywhere) and broadcast it live, would you guess U-2? If so you would be incorrect. U-2 did 4 sold out shows in 3/81 here, one of which was recorded and broadcasted, but that was not their Boston debut, which I'm told was very sparsely attended! U-2 were more like U-who? back then. (and an opening act) I had barely even heard of Hothouse Flowers when this Paradise show happened, only a couple of songs, especially their 1st big hit in the U.S.A. "don't go". This is NOT to be confused with "Keith don't go" (by Nils Lofgren), different song entirely. There is a flip cut between tracks 7 and 8 just as they go into "don't go" (only a few seconds are missing for it), and the last song cuts. I have a second tape of this somewhere but I cannot locate it and it has only the last about 2 min. of the show, so this is very close to all of it and the sound quality (broadcast and recording) is clear and nice for all of this torrent. I've almost never played these tapes. The Newbury Sound set is just a short one, that set is complete. I thought I'd include it since the Paradise one is too long for 1 disc and these 2 will fit easily on 2. These are the only live recordings I've heard of HHF, the only difference in lineage is the Letterman is a recorded broadcast, Newbury and Paradise both live as it happened. The quality of all is A. No static or recording flaws at all. This kind of music isn't my thing but based on their fans reaction they probably rate this an A performance. Boston has ALOT of Irish people, and the band had a good time with these shows. Most of the music in the Paradise show is from their 1st album. Sorry, no setlist known for this, only 2 titles, don't go and feet on the ground. The Newbury set is an acoustic lunchtime show, 1st track of that is a satire lunchtime song (not a released one) last one is a DJ goofing off after the show, if you want to know why these are included in here, you have to hear it to really understand. If you're one of the many who really like this band, I haven't seen much of their live stuff around and think you would enjoy hearing these recordings. You actually get 3 versions of their biggest hit here (one acoustic) since I also included their appearance on David Letterman show (1 track, audio only) which is their U.S. network TV debut (according to Letterman, who has made that call incorrectly on a couple of occasions), but I think this time, this was their 1st. If you're burning to CD, I recommend disc 1 with tracks 1-12 of the Paradise show which is everything before 1st encore break,(the show is all in one folder and seamless), which comes out to just a bit over 70 min and leaves about 62 minutes for the remainder on disc 2. Do not sell these recordings. Trade freely and losslessly. | |||||
