Notes: From the taper: "Hi all. I'm the taper of this Negativland show - Brian, the seeder, is a bud of mine in several fanboygroups, notably the one for Mike Keneally, another Negativland fan . I'm glad he's taking the bandwidth to seed this, as I just don't have the setup to do as much seeding as I'd like to. "There DOES exist a video release of part of this same Chicago show - but it's heavily edited and resequenced. The videographer was at the front of the balcony with very nice video gear - I even noticed him before and during the show - but I'm not clear on whether he had a soundboard feed or not. I'd attempted to get him to trade me a copy of the complete unedited video for my audio or whatever else, but no dice there. I understand the prevailing attitude of Negativland enthusiasts is one of creatively modifying whatever "content" falls into their hands, and that's probably why the video was so extensively re-tweaked (same for that "More Than Live" video, which is taken from the, uh, late '92 or early '93 show at the Lounge Ax in Chicago - I was there, too!) - but I'm still more of a generalist and purist when it comes to audio taping, and so preferred to just present the show in its entirety. Voila. "(Actually, there's one thing on the T/F video that I didn't capture in my recording: Several minutes before the show was ready to start, Mark Hosler (I think, I may be wrong) came out and made the announcement that taping was certainly permitted, saying that there'd been a misunderstanding and the venue had turned a few people with gear away. He made it clear that if ya wanted to tape, it was cool, and you should go back to your car and get yer stuff. Unfortunately, I wasn't rolling yet, and missed that little snippet.) "I mentioned to Brian while preparing this raw FLAC version for seeding that I'd seen another complete audio version of the show on eBay a couple years ago, which the seller asserted was a soundboard. His listing didn't contain the whole setlist, but mentioned a few titles, including some identical to the "best guesses" I'd made for yet-unreleased tracks, making me strongly suspect that he was passing off my recording as a soundboard (which it certainly isn't, and I don't know how anyone could mistake it for one). If anyone has a copy of that version, I'd love to hear it and find out for sure; my queries to the seller went unanswered. Ponderous, man - f*cking PONderous. "More on the recording: It's really only about a B/B+ audie, to my ear; I applied a little compression to my listening copy and the copies I traded back in '00 (again, this seed is totally raw other than the volume normalization), and that made it much more listenable for me, but anyone else may prefer different production. I was almost dead center on the floor, but this show was the only time I've been in the Chicago House of Blues, and I don't recall the dimensions of the floor. I think I was maybe 10 or so rows back, just off the center aisle (folding chairs, as I guess it's normally open). Seating was GenAdm, and I was near the front of the queue coming in, so I tried to pick the sweet spot; not knowing how 'stereo' the mix would be, I went for the center rather than closer to either side's PA. "A note on the "encore": If you haven't heard stories or descriptions of the show nor seen the video, it may be hard to tell what's going on in that last track. What happened is, some of the gear was cleared from the center stage, and they brought out an overhead projector, identical to what your teachers used in elementary school. Mark (I think - but don't remember for sure) placed on the overhead transparencies containing a transcript of their edited Casey Kasem rantings, and the audience was instructed to read it aloud together. Apparently, this was the only non-copyright-infringing manner in which they could publicly "perform" the material in question. It was hilarious, and I think you can hear a couple of my stifled chortles on the tape. Be assured, being a human mic stand in this situation is not easy - I would have been rolling on the floor if I hadn't been taping."
