| Notes: | Lineage: 2 x Sennheiser MD-421 > Uher 4200 reel recorded at 19 ips > Audio CD > EAC > FLAC The taper, Victor, used the following setup to record both shows: 2 x Sennheiser MD-421 > Uher 4200 reel recorded at 19 ips. Concerning his rig at the time, he had the following to say about it... "I had my UHER "custom unbuilt" in multiple parts, so I could sneek it in more discretely. Then I built a whole "neck-holder" (like the ones Bob Dylan'd use to hold the harp), a heavy construction sewed in a tough-tissued jacked (often way to hot to bear at concerts...) and the two mics were placed niftily beside each ear hidden by the dutiful long hear..." He said he has never released these shows directly from the master tapes, but did say, specifically concerning the 11/21/70 show, that “the ‘compilations’ I spoke about, we made them on cassettes only, so if it's the compilations circulating, it very much looks like that probably somebody copied them from these cassettes = 2nd or even 3rd generation.” He did mention that he used to have a number of parties and that, quite likely, what we have in our collections comes from someone copying this “compilation” tape, which would mean that most lineage we have could possibly be bogus. Him and a buddy of his would usually record the same show and then combine their smaller, 13cm reels into a large reel by splicing their masters together. He describes their method as follows... "Since we had both a Revox at home that can take the big reels as opposed to the UHER which can only take 13 cm spools and one big reel can hold up to 3 (or 4) small spools, we always recorded on the UHER Side 1 of spool A, and then Side 1 of Spool B and then Side 1 of Spool C and then Side 1 of spool D and then continued the recordings (either he or me) continuously on Side 2 of Spool D and then Side 2 of Spool C and then Side 2 of Spool B and then Side 2 of Spool A. When all spools were full, we scotched them together on one big reel... We never wasted expensive tape to copy onto. Especially since we're really buddies (from childhood), if either one of us wanted to listen to the tape, he'd have it, no problem. So why bother copy (except excerpts on cassette)?" The transfers required Victor to do some repairs to his reel deck and bake the tapes, which he said took him about three days. These are the raw files as received. MOB will be creating a definitive version for Harvested in the near future patching all the missing bits from an alternate recorder. Please DO NOT REMASTER or share on DIME (I will be doing that as soon as we get some seeders here). | |||||

| Notes: | [FA033] 'The Good...The Bad' Altes Casino Montreux, Switzerland November 22nd 1970 Source: audience recording / recorder 1* + recorder 2 low gen sources > Scotch Reel > DAT(0) > WAV@48Khz > Speed & Pitch Correction > FLAC@48Khz Disc 1 - Recorder 1 (62:50m) 1. Announcer (0:10m) 2. ASTRONOMY DOMINE (9:08m) 3. FAT OLD SUN (12:36m) 4. CYMBALINE (10:54m) 5. GREEN IS THE COLOUR (4:05m) 6. CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE, EUGENE (12:21m) 7. SET THE CONTROLS FOR THE HEART OF THE SUN (13:36m) Disc 2 - Recorder 2 (41:23m) 1. ATOM HEART MOTHER (17:10m) 2. THE EMBRYO (12:07m) 3. GREEN IS THE COLOUR (3:10m) 4. CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE, EUGENE (8:56m) The 2nd night at Montreux unearthed, though not in fantastic shape, this is all we could find. This came to me as a mix of 2 recorders, what i call recorder 1 sounding really nice, a nice EX (and it sounds as being an old soundboard recording... but who knows, for now, let's call it recorder 1) and recorder 2, which sounds inferior but decent really. Both recordings are incomplete, and they were kindly given to me by Piggy, from his own Reel he got from an 'old hippy' some years ago, which he brought to a professional studio to transfer to DAT (which cost him $75!). Was hard to compare to what we have from the night before, but after an extensive comparison of the announcements before Green is the Colour from recorder 1, and even some drum fills and patterns, we came to the conclusion that this is indeed a genuine recording from the 2nd night. The story with recorder 1 is that it sounds as an old soundboard recording, more than an audience one, besides, from some info that Piggy gathered, it says that this recorder 1 was broadcasted on the radio, so this 'recorder 1' could be a recording from the radio, or it could be even from the EMI acetates, since both nights were professionally taped for a future release, and also, this rec1 includes an announcer, but i cant pinpoint if this announcer is right on the stage or if it's some kind of Radio introduction. Also, one of the recorders is said to be recorded on an AKAI recorder with 2 mono microphones, 6m in front of the stage, but i cant tell which one of the 2. So for now, till some info appears, we would call this 'recorder 1'. No processing was done to the recording, only pitch and speed correction which was really needed (recorder 1 ran slow and recorder 2 ran fast, with the final portion of CwtAE being damaged and running very fast, as the reel was ending, if you know what i mean). Also, recorder 1 suffers of some channel dropping, but we decided to leave the source as we received it. There some hiss on recorder 1 too, but this is how we obtained it. Also, even though this was speed corrected, some speed fluctuations still occur. Seems this reel wasnt in the best conditions but hey, does that matter? The performance is nice, i like it better than the one from the previous night, great versions of Fat Old Sun and Cymbaline. I hope you enjoy this show as much as i did. cheers, gbc ****************************************************************************** Original notes provided by Piggy: The source reel was obtained from a hippie living in the swiss alps. This reel is of an unknown generation (foggy memory!) and a compilation of 2 recorders. According to the taper, one of the recorders is from an AKAI recorder, 2 mono microphones, 6m in front of the stage (don't know which one). He also mentionned that parts were also recorded from the radio : Here's what was on the reel: Announcer%/Astronomy Domine*/ Fat Old Sun*/ Cymbaline*/ Atom Heart Mother+/ The Embryo (4 minutes only)+/ Green Is The Colour*/ Careful With That Axe Eugene*/ Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun*/ The Embryo (complete this time!)+/ Green Is The Colour+/ Careful With That Axe Eugene+ (end of reel). ~2 hours total. David Gilmour is introduced as the band leader. *: Fantastic recorder, great instrument definition, no tune-ups recorded. No audience interaction, nice and clear. +: Lesser sound quality but still very listenable nonetheless. The performance is very similar to that of the night before and very hard to differentiate. November 1970 still stands out as one of the best live Floyd periods. ****************************************************************************** SHOW IDENTIFIER: ---------------- 1970.11.21 - Roger's announcements before GitC: "These next two things that we're gonna do, we're gonna do together. First of which is another song from the film More, it's called Green is the Colour. The second thing is an instrumental of Ummagumma and it's called Carfeful with that Axe, Eugene. - checked with the audience source from this night 1970.11.22 - Roger's announcements before GitC: "We're gonna do two things together now, one is another song of the soundtrack to the film More which is called Green is the Colour and second thing is an instrumental off Ummagumma and it's called Carfeful with that Axe, Eugene. . On Fat Old Sun on the November 21st on the first 'the silver sound from a time so strange' Nick plays an strange cymbal, which can be heard perfectly on the Smoking Blues/Before the Fire and the audience source of 1970-11-21, but it's not present here, and besides the drum pattern is a bit different, more snare drum on here. And on November 21st Gilmours laughs and on November 22nd dont. . As an additional note, because of the checking done to both nights, we can assure that The Embryo on the SBD sources (Smoking Blues/Fireman's Tapes) is indeed from November 22nd, since we checked the annoucements and they are different. ****************************************************************************** A VERY BIG thanks to The Hippy on the swiss alps and Piggy (Philippe) who provided this amazing source to be shared freely with all the Floyd community ****************************************************************************** - produced by buffalofloyd and gbc with the supervision of Phil - pitch, speed correction and encoding by buffalofloyd - artwork by Philippe - moral support by The Hot Nurse! ****************************************** ** Hello Sirene! | Notes: | Pink Floyd - Night & Day Reprise 21/22 November 1970, Montreux Casino The objective of this torrent is to simply pitch & speed correct the wonderful EMI acetate that runs rather flat, and sew together more cohesively the running order of songs and sources. This is my first torrent, so I hope it goes well. All the credit should go to the prior releases and revisions, I'm simply making it more to my listening tastes (and since it took so long and was so much work I figured I should share with the community). The Smoking Blues wav files were used as a template, and all other sources were carefully made to sit more even in volume and EQ. No hard limiting was used (see the wave image), dynamics still present. Occasionally, dropouts or poor edits were fixed as were some crossfades. Speed correction performed by compressing/expanding the files themselves, no pitch shifting or DSP. I've always felt Gilmour's voice can get a little rough when running slow, one of my first boot LP's ran like this. Also, as a guitarist it's fun to play with a CD and not have to retune from song to song. And by pitch correcting you gain a hint of sparkle if raised back up, not a bad thing! Smoking Blues: 97.6% Jewels: 97.6% Good: 100.8% Bad: tape seemed Ok to my ears. Not a whole lot more info to add to the prior torrent, thanks to David D. There's some art thrown in. Until better sources are revealed, enjoy! Mike. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Night And Day - Pink Floyd Live at Montreux, 1970 This is a compilation of available recordings of Pink Floyd's two shows at Altes Casino, Montreux, November 21-22, 1970. The four sources used and their presumed provenance are as follows: Smoking Blues - EMI acetate recording 10 Jewels And A Swiss Movement - master audience tape from Nov 21 show The Good - EMI acetate (via FM radio) The Bad - audience tape from Nov 22 show I have not edited, remstered, or altered the files in any way. I am no audio expert and I leave that for the masters of the art. This compilation will hopefully give way to one where tonality and volume matches for a truly smooth listening experience. Notes on track order: There is no recording known for A Saucerful Of Secrets (which would be after Set The Controls) for November 22. The track order for the first show matches the full master audience reel. The track order for the second show matches the order given by Povey and Russell. Except... Most sources list both blues encores as happening with the second show. I find this very unlikely. The slower, quieter number is introduced with, "It's a bit late for mind expanding, so we're going to play some music to calm down to." Since the second show began at 2:30pm, this seems very odd. Further, the quieter crowd seems to match better with the tracks from the 21st, as people slowly drift away in the early hours of the morning to sleep, zone out, or make a physical connection with the gorgeous hippie thay have been next to all evening. So, in short, I have placed the blues tracks where I think they belong. If you don't like it, just move Calm Blues from 21st to 22nd :) Night - 1970-11-21: Disc 1 1. Loud Blues - Smoking Blues Share and enjoy! - David D -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PINK FLOYD > Title: Smoking Blues > Format: 2CD > Catalog: FBR 001/002 - Funny Boot Records > Produced: 1995 > Date: November 21 (+22?), 1970 (incorrectly dated from 1969 on the inside front cover) > Place: Montreux Casino, Montreux, Switzerland > Quality: EX Soundboard Recording > Lineage: My Brand-new Silvers > EAC > WAV > FLAC > Comments: Here's a classic Pink Floyd bootleg, I saw it several times on various trackers but never from original silvers & with clear lineage. I have finaly found these silvers today at a record fair (still sealed!!!) so I share it with you folks ;-) This is a soundboard recording and well worth seeking out, but one can see why it was not officialy released: Dave has one of his trademark laughing attacks during 'Fat Old Sun'. Also, during the closing segment of 'Cymbaline' (after the footsteps sequence), there is a particularly bad and prolonged problem with the sound system, causing Dave to burst into laughter once again. Roger introduces the show with a "good morning" and introduces 'More Blues' with remarks about it being "too late for mind expanding music, so we'll play some music to calm down by", presaging his words years later before the concluding encore of the infamous Montreal '77 concert. There is a minor amount of tape hiss, and a somewhat more annoying distortion during loud passages which prevent a EX+ rating for this CD, but then again how often does a newly uncovered Pink Floyd soundboard recording like this appear? The most important thing is Disc2, Track 3 'Just Another Twelve Bar' It's the first available recording of this blues number Here are the songs intros by Roger: - Astronomy Domine: (someone yells "Roger!") 'Good morning, this is called Astronomy Domine' - Fat Old Son: 'This one's Dave's and it's called Fat Old Sun' - Atom Heart Mother: 'We've got a new album out at the moment and it's called Atom Heart Mother and there's a track on it called AHM, which is got brass instruments and a choir, as well as us, but we do a version without the brass and choir and we're going to do that now and then we're going to take a break' - Cymbaline: 'A song we recorded for a film called More. The song is called Cymbaline. - The Embryo: 'This song is called The Embryo' - Just Another Twelve Bar: No intro - More Blues: 'Ok, it's a bit late for mind expanding, so we're going to play music to calm down to' (song fades out before it's finished, so there are no further comments). > Band: Roger Waters David Gilmour Rick Wright Nick Mason > Tracklisting Disc 1: 1. Astronomy Domine 2. Fat Old Sun 3. Atom Heart Mother Disc 2: 1. Cymbaline 2. The Embryo 3. Just Another Twelve Bar 4. More Blues (fades out) | |||||

The first one (from 21Nov70) was released in November 2010 under the title "Too Late For Mind Expanding" (HRV CDR 036). This second performance, hastily added for the 22Nov70 afternoon at 2.30pm, is entitled "Too Early For A Gig" (HRV CDR 037). While "Too Late For Mind Expanding" was mainly based on Victor's raw transfer from (some of) his mastertapes shared in November 2009, for this second date we only had Interstellar Overdrive from that transfer. Hopefully, four other tracks recorded by Victor on 22Nov70 surfaced in 1995 on the "Smoking Blues" bootleg, with superb sound quality despite the fact that this bootleg is probably sourced from a 1st or 2nd gen tape. For the rest of the show, we used an alternate source, from a different recorder: "Reeling On Pink Floyd - Tape 24". The first four songs of the show were remastered from "Smoking Blues". Speed was corrected, slight EQ was applied and channel balance was adjusted. The main problem with "Smoking Blues" is the presence of annoying distorsion during the loud parts, mainly in the right channel, probably due to saturation during the dubbing process of Victor's tape for the copy used by the bootleggers. All RoIOs using "Smoking Blues" or its tape source (like "Before The Fire") have that analog saturation problem during the loud parts (this is not a digital saturation that could be corrected by clip restoration). On "Good Morning Folks" RoIO (from Inner Circle Production 1998), the distorsion was partly attenuated, but is still noticeable and the sound quality was altered in the process. For the present Harvested release, the distorsion has been manually attenuated with no impact on the clarity of the recording and we are very proud of the result, since this is the first time that you can enjoy the loud parts of Atom Heart Mother or Fat Old Sun without this saturation. In order to have the most complete version of that concert, tunings and announcements that were cut on "Smoking Blues", were restored using the "Reeling Tape 24" source. A missing portion of Cymbaline, edited on "Smoking Blues" (probably to hide a tape flip) was restored for this release, again from the "Reeling Tape 24" source (from 04'10" to 04'55"). The five next songs, from Embryo to A Saucerful Of Secrets, were remastered from the "Reeling Tape 24" recording. Speed was corrected, and EQ was applied in order to bring more presence. The balance between channels needed some attention, especially for Embryo, where the left channel was suffering from severe fluctuations. It became better with Green Is the Colour, but the left channel remained the most problematic one, with more dropouts and tape flaws than the right channel. All these flaws were carefully corrected or attenuated. The tracks sourced from "Reeling Tape 24" are more hissy than the ones from "Smoking Blues", but the hiss could not be reduced without altering the clarity of the recording, so it was decided to leave it as it is. The last song, Interstellar Overdrive, was remastered from Victor's 2009 raw transfer, except the last 5 minutes that were missing on Victor's tape and were restored from "Reeling Tape 24". Even if "Reeling Tape 24" has a more complete version of Interstellar overdrive, the very last chords are missing. These were restored by taking another audience recording from that era for the very end of the song and the last applauses. Enjoy ! MOB (March 11, 2012) Harvested Records | |||||
