| Notes: | Artwork included. OK, this is the one. I obviously like all of the August ?85 R.E.M. shows, but Radio City is my favorite. I attended this, and the night before in NJ as well, so maybe I?m demonstrating a little bias. But the combination of a great show and the superior recording makes this one the best of the bunch. David O. Thomas taped this from 10th row center, as indicated by hatnham, who was with him that night. The recording has a different quality to it, which might be due to the acoustics of Radio City. The mix is just right, with all of the instruments coming through very clearly. If I did not know the source, I would think this was a soundboard. I have to give this an A. One minor note ? the last few songs are from a different source. There is actually one less analog generation, but the recording as not as good. A glance at the setlist does not indicate any real surprises. They mostly avoid the odd covers that highlighted the encores from some of the previous shows. The band was a bit overwhelmed by the size of the venue, and there are many funny comments acknowledging this throughout the night. Somehow I think this inspired them, because it is a very high energy performance. Due to the wonders of technology and the way it makes our world smaller, Dave recently became aware that I was posting his recordings all these years later, and he is now on Dime. Hopefully he can post his comments and share a bit about what it was like to tape all of these shows. So, this brings the August ?85 anniversary series to a close. I will probably return with a 20th anniversary post of a show or two from the fall ?85 southeast tour. For now, though, I?m going to turn my attention to a few different artists, and eventually some other R.E.M. stuff from my collection. | |||||

| Notes: | Known Faults: cut in "Old Man Kensey" due to tape flip; final song "Windout" cuts before the end and misses Stipe's final improvised vocals. JEMS is delighted to debut the first in a series of previously uncirculated R.E.M. soundboard recordings. Our own history with the band goes back to JEMS patriarch Jared Houser taping them in Detroit 1983. We collectively recorded the band dozens of times thereafter and collected R.E.M. live recordings for just as long. As such, we know what soundboard tapes are in circulation, which is what makes these new board recordings so exciting. R.E.M. is playing their biggest New York City headline show to date at Radio City Music Hall, with a capacity just under 6,000. Its the last date of the 1985 tours US leg dubbed Reconstruction 1. The main set is representative of the tour, diving deep into Fables of the Reconstruction and a good helping of Reckoning, plus a couple of covers: CCRs Have You Ever Seen The Rain? and Pills written by Bo Diddley by way of the New York Dolls. The encore includes cuts from Murmur and the Chronic Town EP, a cover of Moon River plus two unreleased originals: Windout and what for my money is the best R.E.M. outtake of the era, Theme From Two Steps Onward. Its a winning performance and a strong setlist. There are some fun snippets thrown in as well. Details of how or why the board recording was made are lost to history but the provenance of the tape suggests this is the master cassette and the sound quality offers nothing to dispute that. We did a bit of work to bring the instruments into better balance and widen the soundscape, but mostly this sounds great because it is the real deal. Samples provided. Huge thanks go out to By-Tor X-1 for the transfer and Walrus for his vital role in liberating these tapes. Moonvoices lent a hand as well, Professor Goody weighed in on pitch and mjk5510 handled post production. Were grateful to work on such a major find for R.E.M. fans. BK for JEMS | |||||
