Notes: By demonstrating that the spirit of punk could live in traditional Irish folk music, the Pogues were one of the most radical bands of the mid-'80s. Led by Shane MacGowan, whose slurred, incomprehensible voice often disguised the sheer poetry of his songs, the Pogues were undeniably political - not only were many of their songs explicitly in favor of working-class liberalism, but the wild, careening sound of their punk-injected folk was implicitly radical. This is a fantastic show with The Pogues at the height of their career. MacGowan is in ripe form, chewing gum, swearing his head off, drinking from at least 5 different bottles of booze placed in strategic spots all over the stage and chain-smoking his way thru the entire show. At one point some very brave audience member screams out, "You're ugly!" to which MacGowan slurrs the reply, "I know. Doesn't matter but. I'm rich!". Not long after this show MacGowan would fall so deep into alcoholism and drug addiction the band would be forced to fire him, making this show a glittering glimpse of the greatness of The Pouges at their height. The setlist is a veritable greatest-hits list. This is a true beauty. Thanks Rupert. Enjoy!
