Notes: Recorded By Mike Millard ********************************************************************** FLAC Tags Via xACT 2.53 By OldNeumanntapr ********************************************************************** Known Faults: Dropouts and cuts due to inadvertent test tones, particularly in "Honky Tonk Women" and to a lesser extent "All Down The Line." Also a cut in "It's Only Rock 'N Roll" and a small splice in "Fingerprint File." Rolling Stones, The Forum, Inglewood, CA, July 12, 1975 Last week the Lost and Found series had our biggest QC failure to date, as in our haste to prep shows before the closure of TTD we inadvertently took an audio file labeled Rolling Stones 7/12/75 and posted it without realizing it was in fact the same underlying recording as Mike "The Mike" Millard's tape of the July 11, 1975 show, previously posted as Vol. 117. While commenters pointed out that the shortened setlist seemed uncannily similar to Vol. 117, we didn't and we're sorry about that. We also conflated the rationale behind the issues with both recordings. As we wrote in the notes for Vol. 117, Mike's partial July 11 recording didn't suffer from technical issues, but he may have been unhappy with the sound (too much guitar and not enough vocals) as well as a rowdy crowd around him, and decided to abort his recording after "Happy." On July 12, Mike was indeed having technical with the test-tone button on the back of the Nakamichi 550, which was inadvertently being pushed at the start of the show, perhaps due to its positioning in the bag, causing several interruptions to "Honky Tonk Women" and the start of "All Down The Line." He did not, however, stop taping the show after that, as this proper transfer of Mike's actual July 12 recording makes clear. Why does a Nak 500 have a test tone button? It's used to calibrate recording levels when setting up the deck. But the button does stick out on the back and it isn't hard to imagine how it could be unintentionally pushed in a concert setting where the bag Mike kept the deck in was jostled or sitting awkwardly on the floor. We have seamlessly edited out the test tone noises at the start of the show and what's left is an otherwise excellent and complete recording of the full show. Samples provided. We also confirmed this recording to be July 12 by checking it against Ed F's master from the same night. They match. The source recording for this show is Rob S's DAT transfer of Mike's master cassette done in the early 2000s. On his contemporary notes, Rob writes "All kinds of problems with test tone switch." Here's what Jim R recalled about the Stones fourth show at the Forum in 1975: I attended the Rolling Stones concert with Mike Millard at The Forum in LA. This was the fourth of the five shows on July 12, 1975. We had great seats. Row A on the floor. Yep, once again Mike Millard and I were in the Front Row. As confirmed by many previous posts, Saturday, July 12 was the night that was filmed/videotaped and eventually released on DVD. My seats in Row A were near the aisle and I had a big camera next to me most of the night which bumped into me several times. It looked like a TV studio camera rolling around the aisle on a dolly and was the size of an adult bear. Since we were so close to the cameras you might be wondering if either of us got filmed. The answer is "kind of." There's a close up of me in the "Fingerprint File" individual video but not in the main video. Mike is nowhere to be seen, so yes, the answer is "kind of." By the way, the CD release from the LA Forum '75 was recorded on Sunday, July 13. Why these official recordings were mislabeled is anybody's guess. So here we are, the Rolling Stones, front row on a Saturday night with the Nak purring and my camera clicking. As I have said before, it was almost like they were playing in our own living room. A party scene to say the least. It does not get any better than this. Despite the initial flaws, we hope you enjoy Mike's recording from this night as well as a few of my pictures. Hats off to my dear friend Mike may he rest in peace. ### JEMS is proud to partner with Rob, Jim R, Ed F, Barry G and many others to release Millard's historic recordings and to help set the record straight about the man himself. We canít thank Rob enough for reconnecting with Jim and putting his trust in our Millard reissue campaign. He kept Mikeís precious tapes under wraps for two decades, but once Rob learned of our methods and stewardship, he agreed to contribute the Millard DATs and cassettes to the program. Our releases would not be nearly as compelling without Jimís memories, photos and other background contributions. As many of you have noted, the stories offer an entertaining complement to Mikeís incredible audio documents. At JEMS, we take our role as archivists seriously and we strive to get things right, but last week we didn't and we apologize for that. The good news of course is that we can now present the July 12 recording in full and directly from Mike's masters. Yet again we are indebted to and grateful for Jim R's written and photographic contributions; Rob's original transfer and digital rip; Professor Goody's pitch work; and mjk5510 who handled post production and CD artwork as always. Finally, cheers to the late, great Mike the MICrophone. His work never ceases to impress. May he rest in peace. BK for JEMS
