Ikahbe performed an opening set.
Wonderful messengers from the Virgin Islands blessed all in attendence at The Independent this evening. Backing Ikahba and Dezarie were Midnite's Ron Benjamin on keys and Dion Hopkins on drums, and from Dezarie's band were Ryan Wilson on Bass and Jerry Simon on guitar.
The Midnite backing sure gave a distinct feel to both artists' sets compared to the first time they came through Northern California in June of 2004. Ikahba busted out a few new tunes and "Truth and Rights" was smoking hot. Dezarie's voice sounded great and her new tune "Jah Words Are The Truth" definitely fired up the crowd. But, it was "Set The Flame" that really got the fire burning. The lyrics cry to burn down injustice, oppression, hatred and segregation: "Moral corruption with vice in all form. Erase true morals of the young ones. Mis-education, brainwashing. White as snow Clorox to the mind. Unemployed and hunger. It's a game being played on the chessboard that all those in power created. Food shortages and financial panics. Organized crime war tactics.... Disgust is too nice of a word to describe how I feel about them. So set the flame. Set the flame. Set the flame." The time has come, and Dezarie has arrived. She stands firm with
fiery, thought-provoking lyrics, an amazing voice and heart-felt beliefs. Give thanks and praises to those responsible for bringing these great artists to California, and bless the taper Vrischika for capturing the magic so beautifully!
