A giant in Canadian Literature, W.O. Mitchell was also an important contributor to the genre of story-telling. As a cultural "interpreter," Mitchell portrayed the Prairie way of life as well as Canadian life in general in the twentieth century. He was a writer with whom many Canadians identified in a very special way, however the universal themes - inherent in his work - of the interplay of the individual and society also gave him a presence in the international literary community.
