Notes: NO CARLOS SANTANA AT THIS SHOW! By 1971, the group were still struggling to maintain a strong musical direction.[19] From January to July they recorded Santana III. Released in September 1971, the album also reached number 1 on the US Billboard 200. At the peak of the band's popularity, the album was the last to feature its classic Woodstock era line-up. Santana explained that there was a lot of unnecessary internal resentment and that managerial problems contributed to the problem, leading to Graham's dismissal. That year, they performed at a concert in Accra to commemorate Ghana's 14th Independence Day. The concert was filmed and released in theaters as Soul to Soul. Matters came to a head shortly before the Santana III tour in September 1971 began, when Carlos wanted Carabello to leave the group, otherwise he would. The band started the tour without Carlos, performing amidst shouts from the audience for the guitarist. After several gigs, Carlos reunited with the band to find Carabello, Areas, and manager/promoter Stan Marcum had quit, leaving the band to perform without percussionists. James "Mingo" Lewis was quickly brought in as a temporary replacement after he saw the band live and offered his services. Santana's gig in Lima, Peru in December 1971 brought further trouble, as the outbreak of violence resulted in their equipment being confiscated and the band deported from the country. The incident was a wake-up call for Carlos, who was determined to "bring the madness to an end.

Notes: JOE'S MEMORIES: I had been looking forward to seeing Santana since seeing them in the Woodstock movie. Santana III had recently been released, but Carlos had left the band, so we weren't quite sure what to expect. Fortunately, we weren't disappointed. The rest of the band was still intact and Neil Schon did a great job on lead guitar. They did a nice set that included just about every Santana song that you could ask for. The only letdown was not getting to hear the one we really expected, "Soul Sacrifice". Other than that, it was a satisfying show and the recording came out well and captured a moment in Santana history that we can still enjoy after all these years.

Notes: Oct 11 Mon: Boston Gardens, Boston, MA 74 min. Exact: Batuka/No One To Depend On - Taboo - Se A Cabo - Waiting/Incident At Neshabur - Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen - Oye Como Va - In A Silent Way/Marbles - Toussaint L'Overture - Evil Ways/Para Los Rumberos - Jambalaya/Gumbo This tour was a rather unfavorable one for Santana. Due to David Brown's severe heroin use, he was replaced by Tom Rutley in August. In late September, due to an argument, the group toured without Carlos Santana, which Santana dismissed the group minis him as a "Santana tribute." In mid-October, Santana returned to the band, and Michael Carabello was taken out of the group. Santana returned because during a series of shows in New York City, the group was booed because Santana wasn't playing with them. An audience member from one of these shows, Mingo Lewis was chosen to play with the group in the meantime.[7]

Notes: Also included is the Toast/Jam file & a printout for the CD (so you can either use the Jam file to create the disc or use the "Audio starts in Pause" timings to have a track end when the music stops and the subsequent track start when the music begins). Notes: Recorded on a Hitachi 290, using the microphone from the RCA YLS 15B portable reel to reel recorder. Original cassettes were transferred to a Mac DAW using a Nakamichi 480; left channel only, manual head alignment. No EQ or noise reduction used. Lo Cut filter on Mackie 1402-VLZ (-18 db/octive @ 75 Hz). Transferred to the Mac using a MOTU 896/Bias Peak. Bias Deck used to even out volume levels. Bias Peak again used to transfer SDII files to WAV files for shn compression. xACT used to fix SBEs & encode to FLACs. This recording is one of literally dozens of concerts recorded by Joe Maloney in the late '60s - late '70s to be released to the live recording community. The bulk of the concerts recorded were in the Boston area, with some in Maine venues
