| Notes: | Total Time ::: 1:05:30 [Total upload time with NO OFFICIAL material 43:35] ::: VG++ stereo AUD (upgrade). Check samples for insufficiency, fence straddlin', sufficiently breathless anticipation. ::: Warts: Repaired dullspots & dropouts but know some are still present. #03 some AUD talk&annoying whistles (lowered) #01 cuts & #02 had splice (so now cleaned up&merged from feedback into #03). #16 fades in slightly late&a bit rough from tapeflip. 2nd half of show distortion slightly increased on loud parts (presumably the band TURNED IT UP). #21 some AUD talk&whistlers (now moved back&lowered). Fairly obnoxious whistler at gig but luckily distanced from taper & usually could be lowered. ::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: ORIGINAL"Mk1"full show 2009 glasnostrd19 upload (+some reseeds) is offspeed & muffled compared to this Mk3. ::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: This Mk3 is a MAJOR upgrade over glasnostrd19 "Mk1"version (lower generation & more natural sounding). ::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: "Mk2"included in"Completer"boot+"Anthology Live"official 2CD #02-06 partial set is is brighter but badly EQ'd. ::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: This Mk3 version is speedfixed, has NO EQ, & IMO is considerably better quality than the released partial version. ::: COMPARISON CLAUSE: CB's "The Completer"2CD Eclipse boot later reissued OFFICIALLY as"Live Anthology"on Cleopatra/Purple Pyramid with CD2 trax 8-13 "Live In Los Angeles May 26,1977"[Distant Sun//Dancing Madly Backwards (On A Sea Of Air)//Armworth//Myopic Void//Breath Of Fire (Part 1)//Breath Of Fire (Part 2)]. ALL versions Mk1+2+3 are the same original taper+location but NOT Los Angeles - DEFINITELY Waukegan. "Mk1"CD is EQ'd,w/audible issues at times. PP lifted their version from a boot as they often do & changed the location for unknown reasons for these songs to incorrect source info. ::: Often circulates as"Chicago"or"Los Angeles"but is Waukegan (northern Chicago suburb).Band says"Welcome to the Night Gallery"&mentions town twice. ::: Previously noted as "Jason Cahoon (or maybe Willy Daffern?) vocals" BUT band intros Willy&he also intros himself during the set. Cahoon left in '76. ::: NEWSPAPER listing: https://videttearchive.ilstu.edu/?a=d&d=vid19770509-01.2.47&srpos=3&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-%22night+gallery%22------ ::: Promoting reunion LP"Dawn Explosion"(their 3rd) recorded '76-77 & issued April'77. 5 songs played here (#09/10/12/14/18), PLUS... ::: "Dawn Explosion"album name AND a song, recorded for album but then omitted&never officially released! AFAIK, this is the ONLY circulating vintage version. ::: Willy Daffern was the vocalist on actual album sessions, so we can assume this version the song "Dawn Explosion" is fairly similar to the unissued one. ::: "Fantasy"intro'd as off their "next"album but must be a slip of the tongue for "new", as they're clearly promoting the LP, which should've already been out. ::: Same era photo: https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1Iz5KUg1NKQ/Uf_2tVNNEiI/AAAAAAAAAdQ/ujiyyp_dPPE/s1600/Captain+Beyond+4_thumb%255B9%255D.jpg ::: "The Vidette"(1977): "One of the biggest eye-openers of this month's concert agenda is Captain Beyond". ::: Vidette also lists 4 more May'77 Illinois gigs: 5/23 Oak Lawn // 5/25 Schaumburg // 5/27 Decatur // 5/31 Chicago. ::: EQ could provide some more clarity but plenty is obtained just thru treble/bass controls, so left it up to YOU. ::: Opening band thanked by CB. Local band? Do YOU remember who it was? Not listed in ad. Maybe the 22min tape filler on my tape. ::: If someone can tell us who the opening band was at this gig, perhaps the recording could be matched to them & uploaded. ::: CB says they'd played"down the street"(Chicago?)8-9 months before this(Aug/Sept'76?)&had had a"change of personnel"-in reference to no Rod Evans. ::: Tho' CB is purportedly Willy Daffern's vox debut, his rocks creds were excellent, in '69-71 he'd drummed for psych bands Hunger&Truk. ::: Surely more CB shows in this era were taped. Does anyone have OTHER 1977 recordings? Recording Information ::: unknown stereo tape recorder/microphone(s) -> master (narrow) stereo tape (probably cassette deck with OK ALC on & single point stereo mike, very possibly built in) -> ? (analog-only generations) -> low generation ('80s transfer) Maxell XLII-90 cassette, Dolby B on. Playback 2021-01-27 ::: low generation ('80s transfer) Maxell XLII-90 cassette on Nakamichi 680ZX cassette deck, Dolby B on, azimuth adjusted for individual tape, heads cleaned & demagnetized -> Sony Linear PCM Recorder PCM-M10 (48kHz/24bit wav file) -> computer -> Audacity [normalisation to remove DC offset (NOT to normalize volume), channel/phase alignment, fades, manual one-at-a-time glitch, bump, clap, pop, click, dropout & dullspot repairs, volume adjustments, #01-03 +2.7%, #04-15 +1.8%, #16-17 +1.3%, #18-25 +2.05% avereaged pitch (speed) fixes with single pass per segment after frequency analysis & with CD pitch verification (pitch averaged in sections to keep changes minimal. "Dancing"only song that sounded a bit off from CD/album pitch but that version about 1% fast if guitar was tuned to A440), NO equalisation or noise reduction] -> CD Wave (track splits) -> 48kHz/24bit flacs (Trader's Little Helper) -> yr ears. (NOTE: Previously uploaded version said mono, but all versions are narrow stereo. Possibly OK quality ALC was used & maybe recorded with a single point stereo mike). Freed 2022-01-xx. Line-up ::: William "Willy" (or "Willie Dee") Daniel Daffern - vocals // Larry "Rhino" Reinhart (†R.I.P. 2012†) - electric guitar // Lee Dorman (†R.I.P. 2012†) - electric bass, backing vocals // Robert E. "Bobby" Caldwell - drums, percussion, backing vocals. Nothing here ever commercially released to my knowledge. If I'm wrong, please advise & I'll take the offending trax offline. DimeTravel 598 ::: Thanks to the original taper & traders! Sincere thanks to whomever uploads this for me. ::: Corrections welcome ::: Personally, tho' I thought the first 2 albums SMOKED from when they were released & have provided never-ending, frequent listens over 5 decades(!) but IMO, the "Dawn Explosion" reunion album was/is a weak effort, mostly only interesting in a derivitive sense. I expected it might grow on me over time, but it never happened, whereas the status of the first 2 remains intact. However, even without the fine Rod Evans vocal work, this set is much more interesting&enjoyable&consistent than the 1977 album. "Breath Of Fire" has almost Axis leanings at times & "Sweet Dreams" comes off as something of a Trower-style tribute to my ears, "Fantasy" is pretty much ripped from earlier songs, Rhino-wise, & the vocal delivery not all that great. "Oblivion", the Rhino-bent instrumental is one of the best new songs. The live "Dawn Explosion" has some fine moments & certainly stands up to the other new material just fine - one wonders both why it wasn't included on the album AND why the original studio version has yet to appear. Overall, this is EXCELLENT, with thundering bass & great guitar & drumming & the vocals are satisfactory enough (and maybe it's not the worst thing that they are a bit low in the mix here). Worked on an EQ version but decided much of what I was doing was easily done with treble control, so have at it. Originally had ZERO intention of spending so much time repairing this, but enjoyed it more than expected. Imagine the coughing toker daydreaming that 45 years later someone would be lowering his input for more musical enjoyment to an AUD tape. Myself, I even went to the effort of filming CB in '73 in Charlotte (super8, previously outed), they rocked! I should say, for those who haven't heard it, there are a number of interesting items to hear on the 2017"Lost&Found 1972-1973"CB collection with early demos, etc - however, sad they didn't appear long ago & even sadder that a bit more effort wasn't put into it in the studio for sound improvements - even a novice will find it easy to improve the sound over the CD versions on a number of the tracks. Still, not to be missed by any hardcore fan. Bobby Caldwell presumably was living in Chicago at the time of this show. Caldwell continues with a version of Captain Beyond to this day tho' he surely makes more cash with his Frank Sinatra cover band! The recent CB reunion vids on YT leave me insufficiently breathless - this is a better era, even if not primetime. Listen, enjoy, show appreciation, share, give, spread peace.
