The Other Side of This Life ExtraInfo: Lots of old bands hit the road in 1989, with the Jefferson Airplane earning Rolling Stones' sobriquet of "most unwelcome reunion of the year." Fact is, this energetic last stand of the band "knocked the socks off the Who reunion" according to a friend of mine who is a bigger Who fan than an Airplane fan, and who saw both bands that year. Interestingly enough, Tim Gorman, the keyboardist for this tour, had also played with Pete Townsend. It had been 17 years since the band had last played an official Airplane show (not 18 as Grace says here), and it is sobering to think that this last reunion tour of the Airplane was 15 years ago -- almost as many years as their hiatus. This Milwaukee show was the very first performance of the reunited Airplane, and while the sound is not up to par for the event, being muddy (although Jack's bass stands out!), the show is valuable for historic reasons. Their voices were fresh (they would roll into their home city after a grueling 40+ shows later), and you can tell that despite even Grace's admitted pre-show trembles that the whole band was excited and still working out the kinks. "The Other Side of This Life," according to Paul's statement here, was only brought out and rehearsed the night before (and would quietly slip into the woodwork by the end of the tour). Grace threw aside her fears and belted out a "White Rabbit" that could have come from 1967 -- you can almost hear them think "hey, we can do this still!" The band followed a rigid setlist (apparently that was Jorma's demand, although, oddly enough, he changed his Tuna show around). But a few tweaks were made here and there, and the band made up for song repetition by re-inventing each tune every night. So hear Marty exclaim "now we will not have to go on saying 'what if' [we had done the tour]" and compare this show to two shows I will be adding from the end of the tour, when the band triumphantly returned to the Bay area for a grand free show finale. After that they would play only one partial show, a free concert in Washington for the homeless, and fracture again, with Grace actually going into semi-retirement. "But as long as all of us are alive," Paul still claims, "there is still a chance of another reunion." Read it and weep, Rolling Stone.
