Sugar Ray Robinson Benefit concert. Bob's last show at the Roxy tickets were up in the 100 dollar range. Very good sounding audience tape with a great club feel on a late Bob show.

Daniel (4/0) / View   Recording Gear: Nakamichi CM-50 microphones > Uher CR-240 Cassette Recorder JEMS 2021...
Notes: JEMS is pleased to revisit another master recording made by Ed F, longtime friend and co-conspirator of Mike Millard. Along with Barry Goldstein, the trio taped a treasure trove of SoCal concerts in the 1970s. To date, we have presented his cassette masters made on lower-quality gear, but like Millard had in 1975, Ed upgraded his rig to Nakamichi CM-50 microphones and a Uher CR-240 cassette deck sometime in 1978 resulting in a massive sonic improvement to his recordings. Fortunately for us, Ed brought the new equipment to the Roxy to tape a special performance by Bob Marley & The Wailers in the 450 seat club. Marley has just played Pauley Pavilion on the UCLA Campus four nights prior on the Survival Tour, but agreed to do the Roxy set as a benefit for boxer Sugar Ray Robinson's Youth Foundation based in Los Angeles. Recordings of the Roxy performance have been in circulation for decades, but this new transfer from Ed's master cassettes captures parts of the evening that had been previously undocumented. DIME user cottonhash points out that this transfer includes a special presentation to Robinson, from legendary record exec Tom Porter, is missing from the circulating versions. This should also be a material upgrade to circulating versions in sound quality, and like a lot of the best Roxy recordings, offers a You Are There quality that acts as a sonic time machine. Thanks to Professor Goody for checking the pitch on this one and to mjk5510 for handling post production. Also, shoutout to cottonhash for encouraging us to release this show and helping us prepare the release. Finally, we're extremely grateful to Ed F for loaning us his historic master tapes. BK for JEMS
