Some crowd noise but sounds nice. It always fascinates me when a Latin American performer I've never heard of plays Radio City, and you see a line of people stretching all the way down Sixth Avenue and over into Times Square waiting to get in. It reminds me that even in the age of the internet, we're not as culturally homogeneous as we think we are. In a similar fashion, The Avett brothers brought NYC's sizable North Carolina colony together at Radio City, and it was a demographically interesting experience. Walking around pre-show, everybody was talking about Research Triangle, Asheville and the Outer Banks, barbecue and sweet tea, and while any of these people individually could have fit into a NYC crowd without attracting attention, all collected together a clear phenotype emerged. They're an attractive group for the most part: at the high end they looked like a bunch of people who narrowly failed the audition for J. Crew models, while others showed the traces of genteel inbreeding that the mountain hollers of the western part of the state have incubated for centuries now. Tastefully dressed, friendly and polite, they seemed sort of like low-wattage Mormons: less dazzle, but greener and more environmentally sound. All and all, a very pleasant group among whom to spend an evening. I felt like I had been mistakenly invited to an extended Charlie Rose family reunion, at which they'd hired a really excellent local band. I hadn't been to Radio City in about 20 years, and I quite liked it actually. It reminds of a sort of Disneyland version of the Beacon: vast and tidy, and anything it lacks in authenticity and grit it makes up for with cheerful artifice and big posters of the Rockettes. The ushers were low-key, polite and professional, and they seemed to actually know where all the seats were (I've gotten sort of used to the United Palace model, where people are seated at random and then left to argue it out among themselves.) The show itself was lots of fun. Sold out, very enthusiastic crowd. One odd thing was a constant stream of people in aisles, going, coming, standing, dancing. For the most part the ushers ignored anything they knew about the fire code, and let the people do their thing. I actually knew almost nothing about the Avetts pre-show, really only that the excellent young musicians Josh Turner and Alex Kastanas cover a lot of their songs (check them out on YouTube.) I wasn't disappointed. Catchy songs, very easy to enjoy on first hearing. Langhorne Slim opened the show, and joined the band for a couple of songs later. Paleface and Mo did a couple of their own songs and some singalong, as did Nicole Atkins. If you're a fan, you'll certainly want this very long and well performed show, and if you've never heard them, well, it's time to check them out.
