Comment

The last ever Pumpkins studio album (before split). Virgin Records wouldn't let them release a second Machina album, so as a way of saying 'Fuck You' to their record company, they pressed 25 copies of the album on vinyl and gave those copies to friends and told them to circulate them.

Notes: This was a "get it out there, now" release. I didn't have the greatest equipment- the turntable (which was black, btw :P") had 2 speeds (33-1/3 & 45) w/ no fine adjustment (that I know of)- but I figured someone else would release a better one eventually anyway. - Eric Agnew

Notes: This is one I wish I never had to do. As a dedicated fan I feel we got stiffed a bit with this one, though I understand the reasoning behind the way this was released. But vinyl? Ugh! Vinyl sucks! Crackling and fuzzies, incorrect frequency responses. The digital world has done away with that. Sure there are other things missing in the digital realm, but most of that is not even audible by over 97% of humans. This sounds so much better than before, a nice clarity and detail to the songs. Things will jump out that you hadn't noticed before. Of course there's a certain gritty brutality to a lot of it as well, thanks to the vinyl. I did my best to balance a regain of high-end while retaining a lisentable quality. Wasn't easy, but I think it came out decently. And in my opinion, you'll see that some of the better material was left off of M1. Some of this just rocks you to your bones. And you'll never hear James Browns' "Soul Power" like this anywhere else. "...we all know I'm full of shit..."

Notes: AKA "Machina II/Friends & Enemies of Modern Music". Very rare, vinyl sourced boot put out by Constantinople Records (Billy's own label). Only 25 of this set were pressed. The only flaw in the audio quality is a few pops n' clicks from the vinyl source. MUST HAVE for any SP fan. See Extended for more info.

Notes: Machina II / The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music by The Smashing Pumpkins is a followup to Machina, and the last album from the band. As a final farewell, and a fuck you to a record label that didn't give them the support they deserved, a limited pressing album was made (3x10" + 2LP, 5 discs total) and given away to be bootlegged out among the fans. All tracks are completely new/unheard, except for Real Love, which appears to be the same as the one found on the "Friends & Enemies" 60m cassette>bootleg, and Le Deux Machina, which is the same synth version as found on the acoustic machina demos. Just to clear up any possible confusion, this is the final album from the band. There are only 25 copies. There will NOT be a CD pressing. The story of MACHINA II/the friends and enemies of modern music: On September 5, 2000, 25 packages were sent out via FedEx containing 1 each of the 3 EPs and the double LP along with the story. There was no record cover, no track listing, no credits, and no other information of any type.
