| Notes: | Richard Melville Hall got his nickname from the fact that his great-great-granduncle was Moby Dick author Herman Melville. He was born and raised in Darien, Connecticut, an upper-class bedroom community 50 miles north of Manhattan. Moby studied music and classical guitar; dabbled with hardcore punk in the Vatican Commandos; majored in philosophy at the University of Connecticut, and graduated with two abiding fascinations: Christianity and dance music. He became a DJ in New York in the late '80s and began crafting imaginative collages that mixed samples of Stockhausen-style industrial noise, pop fluff like Samantha Fox, and James Brown beats.
