Notes: Recorded live in France, Holland, and Puerto Rico, Living Legacy is a celebration of Steel Pulse's 20-year career as a reggae pioneer. The disc represents the first of two albums to be released on Tuff Gong International from the Birmingham, England, legend and flaunts the combo's impressive versatility and skill. Founding members David Hinds (guitar and vocals), Selwyn Brown (keyboards and vocals), and Steve Nesbitt (drums) are joined by a talented crew of supporting musicians, who ably snake the group through a sumptuous obstacle course of side styles. Of course, the collection is dominated by the band's silky smooth reggae, but hints of soft ska ("Bodyguard") emerge with head-bopping pop accents ("Prodigal Son") and the occasional Hendrixian bite ("Islands Unite"). Throughout all the songs, though, are Steel Pulse's unwavering spirituality and strong political stance (on "Ku Klux Klan (Sleight Return)" and "Black Enough" in particular). In a live setting, these tracks not only come alive but become so much more immediate and urgent than their studio versions. A fitting debut on the label founded by their old chum and mentor Bob Marley.
