Janis Joplin performed on 28 July 1966 at the California Hall in North Beach,
San Francisco, California,

It was one of Janis' first gigs with Big Brother And The Holding Company,
a heavy metal band who were San Francisco contempories of The Grateful Dead,
Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Great Society and Jefferson Airplane.

To put this in context, this is July 1966 - Lnndon Johnson was US president,
The Vietnam was was raging, the Beatles Revolver would be released
the following week on 5 August, the current Rolling Stones album was Aftermath
and Bob Dylan fell off his motorbike the next day.

Women did not perform in heavy loud psychedelic bands but a couple did
on 18 July 1966 at California Hall - Grace Slick with The Great Society
followed by Big Brother And The Holding Company.

Janis joined Big Brother on 4 June 1966.
She was still working out how to work with Big Brother
and she was a singer, not the singer.

This is one of the best mid-1960s rock concerts in existance,
and it is in perfect sound.

Janis makes reference to Grace Slick singing White Rabbit.

Tickets were $2 each.
