| Notes: | "Aaaaand, we're back to the Doug R. collection and another new, unknown, uncirculated show. This time from the Reggae legend Burning Spear. And it's crazy that the first time I saw Burning Spear was in New Orleans on October 19th, 1988, only eight days before this show. I was on Dead Fall tour, and I had just caught and recorded the 10-18 New Orleans show. My wife and I stayed in New Orleans another few days and happened to catch Spear's show at Tipitina's. This recording is off the master audience recording made by David Bernis. And once again, David did a great job with this. When Doug R. did the transfer, there was some tape breakage at the beginning of the show, so the opening song is cut off a little bit, well all but the last minute is missing. And unfortunately there is a tape flip in the middle of "Foggy Road". Otherwise, everything sounds great. The setlist here is similar to the Tipitina's show I saw, but the songs are in a slightly different order. This is pretty common for Burning Spear, mixing things up some every night. The band is sounding strong, especially his horn section. Those guys are really coming through in the mix. Many times the whole band has that "Driving that train down the tracks" vibe to it, so that's a lot of fun. Although there are not any real stand out songs or moments in this show, I did really get into the songs "Swell Head", "Jah No Dead" and "Slavery Day's" mostly because they all had solid deliveries that night. I was a little confused with the 5th song of the night. He's singing "Girl I Love You..." and I can't seem to find a Burning Spear song with that phrase in it. Later he does the song "Woman I Love You", which is entirely different, and I was able to track down. So I think I might need some help with that 5th song's correct title. Plus the very last song I couldn't identify. I'm also gonna start going along with Doug's assertion that this venue, Red Creek Inn, was in Rochester. He gave me a little history lesson on the place, and I'm not gonna argue with local traditions. If the good people of Rochester wanna claim The Red Creek Inn as their own, and say it's not in Henrietta, New York, who am I to disagree. There might be more to this show on another tape. Doug is dealing with boxes full of tapes from David's collection. He may find a 90 minute tape of a show, then a week or two later, the end of the show turns up on another tape he discovers in another box. I feel that might be the case with the Spear recording. If the rest of this show comes through, I'll let ya'all know." | |||||
