| Notes: | Lonnie Liston Smith is a bonafide jazz cat whose career includes spells with Miles Davis, Art Blakey's The Jazz Messengers, Pharaoh Sanders, Roland Kirk and a host of other legends. In the '70s he formed his own group and eventually signed with Columbia Records in part due to the strength of his crossover potential in the burgeoning jazz-fusion genre. This performance comes from a CBS Records convention in Dallas where a number of label signees were showcased. The short set opens with "Sunburst" from Smith's 1978 album Loveland, followed by "Quiet Moments" from Exotic Mysteries, also released in 1978, "Mardi Gras (Carnival) from 1976's Renaissance," then two more from Exotic Moments: "Singing For Love" and "Space Princess." Wikipedia notes that "Quiet Moments" become a signature track for the Quiet Storm radio format, while "Space Princess" was written by then 16-year-old bassist Marcus Miller. The song was actually pressed up as a 12" for disco play. This excellent soundboard recording was unearthed by By-Tor-X-1 who transferred the master cassette and shared the raw file with JEMS. We did a modest mastering pass to yield what to our ears is a lovely slice of jazz. Samples provided. Thanks to By-Tor-X-1 for sharing this excellent tape, Professor Goody for not only checking pitch but identifying the tracks, and to mjk5510 for handling post production. | |||||
