Notes: Legendary British jazz guitarist John McLaughlin began dabbling with Indian classical music in the early '70s with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, incorporating an aggressive but virtuosic electric sound that ignited much subsequent jazz-rock fusion. He began to seriously explore his Eastern influences during the mid-'70s by joining his Western guitar technique to formal Indian musical structures. In 1975 he unplugged and recruited three musicians from India's classical tradition. The result was the band Shakti, a clean combination of Eastern and Western music that anticipated the world-music movement. Shakti pioneered a groundbreaking and highly influential east-meets-west collaborative approach. The group, whose name means creative intelligence, beauty and power, consisted of John McLaughlin on guitar, North Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and violinist L. Shankar and ghatam [percussion] player T.H. "Vikku" Vinayakram, both of whom hail from South India. Together, they created a fluid and organic sound that managed to successfully combine seemingly incompatible traditions. This show is a BBC FM show actually broadcast May 18th. Anything by these guys is bound to be awe inspiring. Thanks so much for the charity Ed, though one has to wonder if I deserve it, eh?!!
