how does this source sound? how bout the fob schoeps? take it easy...
Date: 07/16/2002
I, and the 10-15 people i burned this for are very happy with this source, I would imagine the schopes would sound better, but this is better than decent =) I won't be upgrading if that's the question

I would have to disagree, while this show sounds very good, it probably doesn't sound anywhere near the Schoeps. The Schoeps are far superior mics, for one thing. More importantly, the MZ-N707 listed in the source info is a Sony Mini-Disc recorder. Mini-Discs use lossy compression to fit 74 minutes on such a tiny disc. They're about the equivalent of mp3 @ 256kbps. I recommend seeking out alternative sources.

No comment on the source. The comment about MD compression is false. New generations of MD decks use "nearly lossless" compression. It's about double what he's stated, and MP3's are general 128 which is 1/2 what he stated. There's less loss going from DAT->MD then DAT->CD. That's of course assuming that no "LP2 or LP4" was used (LP2 is about 256 and LP4 is about 128).

Even if minidisc is a "little lossy" its still lossy (I like to stay away from minidisc whenever possible). Which makes this source inferior to the schoeps source. I haven't listened to all of the schoeps source, but it sounds real good.

Not a good sounding source IMO. I would stay away from the AudioTechnica source for any Bonnaroo show, that's just me though.

This source sounds fairly good for an AT > MD rig. However, the circulating Schoeps source (Julie G.'s rig) is far superior... the high end is much crisper, the low end more defined, and the placement more balanced. This source seems off centered to my ears, as if it were quite a bit from the front of board. On the other hand, the Schoeps source has a more up-front, centered sound that more closely resembles that of the show. I would pursue another source, possibly one of the other FOBs, but this source is certainly better than nothing. In fact, it's probably the best MD source I have heard (which, admittedly, is not many). Thanks as always to those taping for their efforts!

What was that I just read? "There's less loss going from DAT->MD then DAT->CD." No no no. Nice try, though. (snicker)

Yes, the comment about DAT>MD being better quality than DAT>CD is totally and absolutely incorrect.

And yes, we are nerds...
