-- Acoustic Show
HOT TUNA TOUR – ORIENTAL THEATRE
by Casey Matthews on July 25, 2012 in Entertainment Concerts
Denver, Colorado – Acoustic Hot Tuna played to a full house Friday night at the Oriental Theatre. The crowd
was seated yet energetic as Jorma Kaukonen belted out familiar tunes. His long time Jefferson Airplane band
mate Jack Casady on the bass and musician on the mandolin joined him.
Jorma seemed to have a glow about him and looked amazing for a man in his early seventies. The three men
created a musical force not to be reckoned with. Some favorites played by the band were Hesitation Blues,
Barbeque King, and one of my all time favorites Genesis. I walked out with a smile on my face and it seemed
that everyone around me had one too.
------------------
A truly masterful & sweet show accented by a powerful encore where there was nothing else to be played afterwards.
Jorma was in fine fettle, often smiling in response to crowd whoops and played some classic lines, even taking
a warhorse like Lightnin' Hopkins' "Come Back Baby" and giving it that extra grit. Jack was his usual classic
stoic powerhouse self. Like Brent Mydland's time in the GD, perhaps it's time the "new guy" tag gets taken off
Barry Mitterhoff: He's been playing with Jorma for 11 years now and had many an exquisite solo on whatever
instrument he touched, and provided pure class all the way.
Even so, Jorma is 71 and Jack is 68, and there are no signs of slowing down. Just some well-oiled, yummy & tasty
Hot Tuna served on a first class platter. Two dozen morsels served over 143 minutes. For me, last night was simply
a joy watching these masters play music that -- like their no-nonsense presence -- is simply righteous and real.
However, what turned the show into one of those last night was the encore. Nothing was ever said about Aurora (and
the movie theater shooting earlier that day), and normally this tune would often happen early in a Jorma/Tuna.
However, nothing was said when they returned to the stage, and the opening notes and choice spoke for themselves.
Such a powerful version that spoke volumes, and that last chord was so final that nothing else could have be
played; for anything else would have genuinely been superfluous.
If you don't know Jorma, you don't know Jack...and you don't know about Barry either. Gentlemen...once again, thank you.

Hot Tuna - Oriental Theater - 7/20/12

On Friday night the Oriental Theater in Denver saw a stout admission line abuzz with anticipation for the
evening’s acoustic Hot Tuna performance. No opening act. No excess equipment up on stage (aside from mandolin
player Barry Mitterhoff’s rack of stringed instruments). Just Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady and Mitterhoff, three
chairs and mic stands. And that was--honestly, in my opinion--all that was necessary for one of this years most
anticipated and powerful shows in Denver, and essentially the best atmosphere to experience a band like Tuna in.
The boys hit the stage and the audience rose from their chairs for a standing ovation, comprised of half
gratitude and half praise, for some of the hardest working performers in rock and roll history. The musicians
smiled back, took their places and wasted no time launching into “Nobody Knows When Your Down and Out.”
There was no bullshit throughout the evening. A three-part hustle on “Hesitation Blues” drew a notable crowd
roar amidst an evening filled with jams including “Search My Heart,” “I Know You Rider,” “Barbeque King” and
“Death Don’t Have No Mercy” (which was quite possibly the bands subtle homage to the victims of the tragedy
in Aurora, CO earlier that day).
As an intro to “Sea Child” off the album Burgers, Jorma spoke in a romantically humorous tone about his
1934 Buick Victoria that is pictured on the cover; and all three performers had a laugh plugging their line
of organic teas, and their latest release Steady As She Goes.
The duo of Jack and Jorma has always stood strong as raw, no-nonsense blues-rooted rock and roll, and even
after 40+ years, the song remains the same. And I can’t say enough about Mitterhoff; he is an ace in his own
right, and a perfect addition to the well-established test of time that is Hot Tuna.
