Saturday, November 24, 2012
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Rex Theater
1602 East Carson St.
All recording, mastering & transferring done by CopyKatz Engineering. Taping & recording great music since 1972.
This is my 5th posting of a recorded event online. Feel free to leave comments (positive or negative) so that as I dig
into my vault for future postings I can make them the best possible for yinz all.
Recording equipment:
Soundboard ---> Pro Co DynaMike 224S cables ---> Tascam DR-680 with phantom power turned off (tracks 3 & 4
were my digital feeds) mastering as 12bit/44100Hz .wav.
Recording accessories:
Gator G-Broadcaster bag.
Recording location:
right side of sbd. (the soundboard is located on far left side in the rear of the floor) ... about 80 ft.
from stage
Transfer:
SDHC card ---> Tascam DR-680 ---> Tascam's USB cord ---> HP G60-530US Notebook
Mastering:
Audacity 2.0.0 (Unicode) for normalization & creation of tracks. Then to FLAC MP3 Converter to create
.flac files from the .wav files at compression level 8. All checksums & torrent files created with
Trader's Little Helper 2.7.0 (Build 172)
*note: FLAC MP3 Converter is the name of the software. At no time has this recording been in the .mp3
format!
This performance is 1 set with 2 min. encore break.
*note: This is the 1st show for my Tascam DR-680 deck & also for the omnidirectional capsules (used for
audience & matrix files).
Businesses used that made this recording possible:
Sweetwater - cables
Musician's Friend - deck & bag
Best Buy - SDHC card
Lowe's Home Improvement Center - extention cord
Culture Shop - ticket
Katz tails:
First off, let me inform yinz all that dumb-ass me left my headphones at home ... So I wasn't
able to listen & adjust the mix on the matrix, I had only visuals on the levels to go by. And with
this being my first solo matrix recording I had no idea on even where to begin with the mix levels.
Being the only person recording the show, I had no one to seek advice from. After listening to the
show, while I was splitting it ito tracks, I've come to the conclusion that the audience should have
been more prominate as the audience is barely audible between tunes. Thus the feel of the show that
was desired by the matrix recording is lacking, in my own self-critical opinion.
A really cool feature of the dr-680 is that it was creating 3 seperate stereo files at once. Frst
file (tracks 1 & 2) was the audience recording, the second file (tracks 3 & 4) was this file, the
digital feed & the third file (tracks 1, 2, 3 & 4) was the mix of the first 2 files.
It was great to see quite a few friends that I haven't seen since back in the 90s. Alex, Todd,
Lisa (even though she didn't remember me), Gumby, Jeff, Kevin, Jordan (who no longer jams with Donna,
but still is part of the family, as he is their merchandise salesman) & Rikki (who I had touched base
with at the "donnafans" page, but didn't know she was going to be in attendance) ... to name a few.
So ... kick back ... n enjoy!!

them all my best shot. It's been 9 years or thereabouts since have been at a Donna show ... Alot of new
tunes are being played since then.
Many thanks to the sound engineer (for allowing me to receive the digital feed), the Rex
hospitality staff (for allowing me to enter early (due to a lawnmower accident if my foot
gets cold I'm in severe pain), the Rex security crew (for keeping a few drunks away from
my rig) & to Donna The Buffalo (for putting on one hell of a great show)!
Deadicated to "The Herd" all over!
