OldNeumanntapr Notes-
Sadly, this was the last time that I would get to record Merl Saunders. Since the previous night’s show at Loco Ranchero in San Luis Obispo was so good I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to drive to Santa Barbara to record Merl again. This was the second time in as many years that I recorded back-to-back  Merl Saunders shows in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. I had gotten to know Kip Stork, the Loco Ranchero soundman, so there was no trouble getting in and plugging my D5 into the board the previous night in San Luis Obispo. This show however, was different. At the previous night’s show I had met Michael Brand, a D5 taper from New York City, and invited him to crash on my couch after the show. Michael had the best Indica I’d ever had. I remember that he said that he had a brother named Russell who was also a taper. We stayed up late that night and he copied some of my tapes using both my D5 and his. When I got to The Brew House for the second show, I found out that the venue was only allowing one deck to be plugged into the board. Since I had befriended Michael and put him up for the night the previous evening, he gave me a patch from his D5 to mine on the sly. I think I missed a song and a half. I can’t remember what the opener was, but my recording starts part way into ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’ I seem to remember that there was one whole song I missed, but it was a long time ago and I might be mistaken. I might have only missed the first part of the opener. I am grateful to Michael for letting me plug into his D5 that night, because otherwise I would have come away without a tape. The Brew House has two rooms for live music. Last year’s show at the Brew House Merl played in the small room and I ended up using my Nakamichi CM-300s because they were not miking all the instruments. This time he played in the larger room and everything was miked. Whether or not Michael ever transferred his recording is unknown. We were the only tapers present at  each of the two shows. Merl mentioned that he wound be playing The Palomino Club in North Hollywood, CA next. It is not known if a recording of that shows exists.
