=============================================================================
Grateful Dead in Bingo town! My girlfriend at the time now ex wife was raised in the Binghamton area and we all thought this show had extra panache for being in her hometown. So her sisters and most of our Syracuse deadhead friends bought tickets and her family was there waiting for us as we arrived from being in VA and W VA. With one day off to get from Morgantown to Syracuse then down to Bingo the day of show as this was also close to final term papers and exams so some of us had to do some school stuff before heading to the show. Driving into town I recall seeing all the cars and deadheads playing hacky-sack and frisbee tailgating by the river across the street from the venue.

The show had great highlights, one reviewer, 'uncjhn' on dead.net claims: "It was the first Not Fade Away chant in modern times. The connection between the band and the audience was so strong. The fade away chant blew all of us away and went on to define the next 10+ years."

The Help > Slip> Franklins is a real good one musically with just a few vocal flubs. The interplay between Jerry's guitar and Phil's bass at the climax of Franklin's is superb. Lost>Saint used to be one of my favorite combinations; I really enjoy the "Sure Don't Know What I'm Going For" section and the meaning of the lyrics crossed with the manner which Bob delivered them. This rendition is all you could hope for- slow and flowing at the beginning and nice and deliberate during the beginning to Saint of Circumstance, Brent was throwing out some "rain falling down's" as they went into the tension/release segment coming out with a raucous "Never Know" section which had the crowd rockin'.

The flow of this second set was odd for this timeframe in that they then played a sixth tune, Terrapin Station, before drums. It was a beautifully sung version, Jerry's voice full and unwavering belting out "And the Whistle is Screaming" with Phil's bass bombs shaking the tiny arena.The Wharf Rat has powerful vocals with a little chuckle by Jerry at one point.

Regarding the recording- This tape was marked patched out of Jim Wise. I did not know him before then but Tom did, so we patched. Due to the family nature of our guests we were running late and could not get either mics or stand inside. IMO, his recording on the LMA along with the Charlie Miller SBD are the best of this show out there. Fortunately there were many tapers at this show and so several different sources exist. I have asked other tapers from that time if a probably duplicate source should be on the LMA and they all say might as well put it out there, every recording will have unique flaws and characteristics even if patched out duplicating the same microphones.
