=============================================================================
This was my first show to get shut out of. Tom and I met up in New Haven, got parked near each other, then waited for his friends to show with his ticket. They had no extras so after I met some of his friends from Maine, several of whom I became fast friends with, I was searching for a ticket. I remember sitting in Tom's car in a lot a few blocks down from the coliseum after looking for a ticket for an hour or so. We were on traffic ramps and all around the place, no tickets to be had. So we decided he would go in with the deck and see if he could patch. After Tom had gone to the show I got out of the car just to look around, there were some heads still looking for tickets and some still arriving into town who probably had tickets. Still I was shut out this night.

I saw this dude walking from the bridge area toward our lot holding a tie dye. He indicated it was for sale. I had never contemplated buying a tie dye, my SU deadhead friends just made their own, although this one DID have a different look to it. It was Martin of Not Fade Away, and I soon met his partner Dean and since I was so intrigued by their designs I obtained his contact information. It was my very first experience of being outside a show while the band is playing and realizing the parking lot had people in it; that there might be something to do if shut out aside from wait in the car. In 1982 this crowd was small, able to "hide in plain sight" mostly from the authorities.

After the show we got a motel room toward the outskirts of town and wound up copying tapes from one deck to the other in the hotel room. We probably used batteries as we would not ordinarily have a wall charger for those old Sony TCD5's. One of Tom's friends, Greg Martens I met that day would play a huge role in my life, both Grateful Dead and more. We wound up in my car together the next morning because we needed tapes and I figured the best place to get them was Uncle Steve's in NYC. When Greg got in my car, I said, "before we take off I have something I should tell you", he said, "I have something to tell you"- we laughed our asses off as we carefully drove to the city. We became friends before the drive to NYC and back was over. In NYC, we bought a Sony TCD5M for Tom and a bunch of tapes. Greg recalled that we bought so much stuff with the tape deck and accessories that Uncle Steve's wound up only charging us $10 for $100 worth of tapes (Plus we were buying Metal tapes which probably confused them).

Truckin' > Spoonful > Stella Blue worth he price of admission.!
