the tour story:
Grateful Dead back to the East coast for fall 1983- the start of sold out shows for years to come. This tour opener in Richmond VA was highly anticipated and had the floor GA which was soon to not be the norm at indoor venues. After years of East coast GA shows in hockey arenas and college gymnasiums the promoters and GD's management started booking more venues with reserved seating. Looking back, not all that stunning but at the time it was notable. The Executive crew had been busy between tours as Chris acquired some new microphones with Professor Yacavone at the lead in terms of what to buy. A binaural head Sennheiser mke2002 stereo microphone kit was chosen. I have included a stock photo as the head, nicknamed Butch at some point early in his use, finally melted in the mountain sun at Red Rocks 1984 and I could find no pictures of us with Butch. Butch had a charmed, if short life, being carried around by beautiful deadhead women and once meeting Dan Healy.
Those microphones were a great way to record the band in the setting we were in. Unfortunately, we didn't know how its' output would be a bit too hot for the Sony recorders we used until the first few shows. We still were able to come away with some pretty fine recordings using the binaurals and often would run the Beyer M201's alongside them as well. Although we had the dummy head, most shows the microphones were worn on one of our heads which could be an intense experience. More than one of us passed out wearing them standing on a metal chair in a hot arena 12 or 15 rows from the stage.
For this show, only Chris would get his gear inside, we arrived late from Syracuse and did not try to get gear in. We had a lot of friends at this show surrounding the microphone wearing person. The venue was small and you could feel the excitement of the crowd anticipating the tour opener. The band reciprocated in an eccentric performance for the time period; a very fast paced, tension filled show with a setlist which was atypical and possibly due to some curfew they ended very early, the second set was less than 90 minutes. Deadbase tell us this show was the debut of Mickey Hart's balaphone (the curved marimba type thing) and Bobby's Modulus guitar. The quality of the recording for drums and space showcases how cool that balaphone sounded in that room. You can hear the tapers and mic wearer guessing the first song second set as these mics picked up the audience differently than the Beyers. Someone called it correctly and another one missed it with Might As Well as his call.
The performance had its' fine moments while being as short as it was. The Feel Like A Stranger opener has some keyboard tones from Brent that really kicked the tune into overdrive. The Brown Eyed Women > Cassidy is quite enjoyable. They threw out a very odd second set song selection and made it work with a very spacey Playin in the Band into a dripping with some Jerry vocal sweetness Crazy Fingers. After this the aforementioned balaphone gets some initial use and kickstarts a drums space with some real flavor and oomph. After an almost 20 minute ride on Planet Drum we were treated to a very uptempo grouping of Truckin'> Spoonful> Wharf Rat > Good Lovin with a great Bobby Rap at the end of Good Lovin exemplifying his style and highlighted by using the new Modulus guitar - "Push Back the Night!". The Spoonful was completely unexpected, not too rare, but a treat.
