GOODY EDITION of Jazamo and Agalli sources
LINEAGE :
* - Tracks 1 through 7 (Jazamo traded CD to DIME torrent) :
Aud > CDR > EAC > WAV > Flac > check sector boundries / decoding >
traders little helper
* - Track 8 (agalli traded cassette to audio CD) :
audience cass unknown equipment > cass (unknown gen) >
CDR > EAC (secure with logs) > WAV >
Cool Edit Pro 2.1 : retrack, slight edits >
TLH > FLAC (level 6) >
Goody's additional lineage for this edition:
Tracks 1-6: Original Jazamo set from an earlier download, but the same source as above
> dBpoweramp (WAV) > Cool Edit Pro (Small tracking improvements to original source* ) >
TLH (Flac Level 8)
Tracks 7-8: TLH (WAV) > Audition (removal of overlapping audio & slight fading out of
Track 7 to smooth transition into track 8; declicking parts of Track 7; Parametric EQ
of Track 8 to carefully reduce noise level; slight edit of crowd before Track 8 to smooth
transition from Track 7 - Please note - these transitions are anything BUT smooth, rather,
simply a bit less jarring as the sources are not at all similar) > TLH (FLAC Level 8; .ffp)
PERSONNEL :
Joe Zawinul - Keyboards
Wayne Shorter - Tenor & Soprano Sax
Jaco Pastorius - Fretless Electric Bass Guitar
Peter Erskine - Drums
Bobby Thomas, Jr. - Percussion
TRACKS :
01) 8:30 > Sightseeing (10:11)
02) Madagascar (11:14)
03) Three Views Of A Secret (6:56) >
04) Port Of Entry (11:05) ( // - tape flip after song)
05) Dream Clock > Fast City (13:56)
06) Bass solo (including A Remark You Made and other quotes) (9:29)
07) Brown Street (9:53)
08) Forlorn > Rockin' in Rhythm > Birdland// (8:09) (fades out)
TT : 80:53 (This can be overburned to a single audio disc, if you'd like.)
Though this date apparently also circulates as Atlanta, San Francisco is
the correct location (they played Santa Cruz on the 26th).
Evaluating the two sources the prior torrented version clearly had more
frequency range on it (even though the city provided was wrong). Both
copies are from a source that seems to me to have been range expanded
(ancient pre-digital signal processing that is supposed to enhance the
sound). This led to a pronounced hiss and somewhat unnatural high end
(that is more present on the torrented version). The traded cassette
version seemed to have a few more generations in which some of the edge
was taken off (but unfortunately the missing audio information extended
across the entire range, so it had less of everything). It was a fairly
close call but the one with more sound (even if not entirely natural)
wins out. Both sources were very certainly the same exact performance
(identifiable by unique crowd noises and musical elements).
The other oddity is that both sources (while incomplete) had different
material. The traded cassette was missing about the first two minutes
of track 05, but did have an additional track at the end (track 08 here).
I'm sure there must be a better copy, and also quite likely more of this
show, out there somewhere. If anyone can help right this please post or
get in touch.
My earlier composite assemblage just added the missing material as found.
Here Goody has retracked the material from earlier torrent, smoothed the
transition between sources, and lightly eq'd the last track to improve it
and make it a closer match to the rest.
SOURCES:
JAZAMO torrent #357990 - 2011-06
+ last track from BOMBDIGGITY torrent #361042 appending material from
AGALLI cassette to CD - 2011-06
Goody's additional notes - 6/18/11
*Tracking corrections (to JAZAMO material):
Fixed 3 > 4
Faded 4
Fixed 5 > 6
Fixed 6 > 7
Biggest disappointment, (but what you gonna do?) - Birdland fades out after only
35 seconds of the baddest, phattest low end intro ever. :(
Best surprise - Bomb and Agalli hookin' up the last bit for us all, uncovering
one of the most heartfelt "Forlorn" renditions ever and sequeing into a scorching
"Rockin' In Rhythm".
Nice, guys!
