Playboy Jazz Festival
Hollywood Bowl
Los Angeles, California
Saturday Night
June 16 1979
On a June weekend in 1979 in Los Angeles, Playboy presented a spectacular “one-shot" jazz festival at the venerable Hollywood Bowl.
The artist line-up seemed like a “Who's Who" of the jazz world's greats:
Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Joe Williams, Lionel Hampton, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock,
Willie Bobo, Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon,
Freddie Hubbard, Gerry Mulligan and many more.
In his welcoming remarks to that one-of-a-kind gathering, PLAYBOY founder and then Chairman Hugh M. Hefner said,
“Music critic Leonard Feather called the first Playboy Jazz Festival (in 1959 in Chicago) one of the greatest weekends in the history of jazz,
and I hope and expect that this weekend at the Hollywood Bowl will be remembered in the same way."
This is part of the closing night of the second Playboy Jazz Festival
After this weekend it became an annual event
Josef Zawinul - keyboards
Wayne Shorter - saxophone
Jaco Pastorius - bass
Peter Erskine - percussion
