the Tour Story:
From Niagara Falls to Syracuse for the day between. Destination Philadelphia for my first 3 day run in the city of Brotherly Love, or as Deadheads called it, one of the toughest places to survive three days of urban camping, cheap motel living. Sean and Gary were in the Volare, Tom and I were in his old blue Toyota. We arrived at the Civic Center parking lot relatively early, and Sean knew Philly was tough and the Civic Center was in a rough neighborhood on the South Side. The Civic Center was one of those old concrete Art Deco faced buildings built in the 1930's then rebuilt in the mid 1960's which was eventually demolished in 2005. It was situated just south of Franklin's Field where the Eagles played and had spaciuos public spaces around the grounds as well as parking lots with public space between them stretching along two sides of the building. Sean decided he needed to park under a light as they were traveling with all their tickets and recording gear etc. They got parked right on the corner of a lot across the street from the Civic Center; Tom and I found a spot on the street that first day. As we came out of the show, Sean saw all his windows open, thinks they got broken out and all is lost. When they approach the car they see no glass on the ground, all their stuff in the car, and realize they went into the show and left all four windows down! Heart attack city was the phrase at the time and he and Gary both had one!
The show this night had a nice long first set and an "all GD" second set, encore excepted. Jerry opened and his choices for the set followed a strong Bertha, albeit treated as a warm-up as most openers were. The Loser and Birdsong both had extended jams with some Brent keyboard punctuations during Birdsong. Bobby was in a country sort of mood, throwing down a CC Rider, Hell in a bucket, Big RR BLues along with a FINE The Music Never Stopped. That tune's lyric "They're a band beyond description, Jehovah's favorite choir" leads to a great descriptor of both the band's and fans attitude for this Philly run. The fans were hyped up for a three night run in Philly, spring weather had just begun to get nice and it felt like the band was in a good place to lead their fans to enjoy the party.
China Cat Sunflower > I know You Rider second set opener, solid start to the aforementioned All GD song selection. They combined Estimated Prophet with a Terrapin Station in a most unusual for the mid 80's setlist twist; the jam stitching them together is worth listening to carefully. A short drums and long space lead into a Wheel > Wharf Rat > Sugar Mags and It's All Over Now Baby Blue sent us out the door with smiles and anticipation of being right back in the same seats the next night, spring tour booklet magic.
