the Tour Story:
Philly night two.
When discussing this run of shows, Sean reminded me of another story. I recalled vividly that we had to drive around Philadelphia and going into bars to buy a six pack to go. Some sort of law, they didn't sell beer in corner stores, but they did sell up to a six pack out of bars. So we kept having to run into these bars on the South Side for beer. On day two, it would be only my second time eating Cheesesteaks in Philly; we chose Genos, and it was a truly amazing feast. The deadheads were flocked all over South street and it was a fun time. We had tour booklet tickets so we weren't searching for tickets. The street parking side of the Civic Center was taken over by Deadheads blankets and some selling tie dye T-s and posters etc. This was just before the onset of the large Shakedown street vending area,, which took off about late 1986 and the scene was mellow, maybe a few shirts out on a blanket, although larger vendors such as Not Fade Away were starting to set up in parking lots and private areas near venues by this tour. We found a parking space on the street side a short walk from the venue and enjoyed hanging with the vendors and other heads.
First set was bumpy, with the Bobby opener Feels Like Stranger. By the time they got to the Cowboy tunes mid set, Jerry was singing fine and Bobby's rhythm chords were ringing out from the center speakers directly in front of him. Jerry belted out a sweet lilting Must Have Been the Roses, and Bobby stepped up with a lengthy, slow rolling Let It Grow.
Second set came out of the gate firing with a 27 minute Scarlet > Fire, Phil's bass tone was right on with that thumpy bumpy stuff he did during the transition into Fire on the Mountain. Firecrackers can be heard early on during Fire. Mickey started playing the talking drum earlier in Fire than in the Hampton version. A very unusually placed Samson & Delilah for a Friday night followed with a slightly less unusual segue into space after only three tunes. Following a tasty space; and a Spoonful tease after I Need A Miracle, Morning Dew made its appearance less than a week after the Hampton Dew. It was well played but certainly not the head twister that the Hampton rendition was. They led us out into the night with a Day Job which was starting to get the every third show encore rotation, which in my opinion then, less so now, was sufferingly repetitive. One more Philly show left, and a night of running into buy beer at corner bars left.
