The tour story:
Getting near the end of this tour and my memory is a bit fuzzy on details. Did we stay in Providence or elsewhere on the day off? For sure the night of the show Sean, Gary, Pinney and I stayed at someone's apartment at Brown university copying lots of tapes. I remember learning how much Italian heritage is in Providence, looking at the names of the streets and buildings sparking memories of my childhood in a very Italian city, Schenectady NY. The shopping and food area surrounding the campus was interesting and fun with all sorts of window shopping and people watching opportunities. Sean and I definitely made a shopping visit to an Army Navy store where we purchased three medium sized ammo boxes, as we had been discussing how to best store tapes in while we traveled. We figured they protect ammunition from getting wet so they would work for traveling around the country winding up in every climate possible. Each of us still has them to this day, and I still use mine for taping trips when a festival with car camping is involved.
The recording of set 1 is fraught with problems. The Beyer recording was unlistenable with channel dropouts and blank sections everywhere. On the Binaural rig we missed the first 4.5 minutes of Shakedown which has been patched with an unknown Neumann source for this version. After Shakedown, until we flipped at the end of Lazy Lightning, the sound quality is muddled, no where close to the typical Sennheiser binaural sound quality. Best digital processing methods and practices were used and this is as good as I could get it with 5-6 hours of sorting through the three sources. Takeaway- Shakedown is OK and end of Lazy Lightning > Deal is OK, the rest is highly processed and not great sounding.
As for the show, the first set was only seven songs but over an hour of music. The 13 minute Shakedown is probably the highlight, with the Lazy Lightning jam my second highlight of this set. The second set Scarlet > Fire sound quality is much better. The jam out of Scarlet is slow and meandering with Jerry playing that sweet Mellotron tone through a plucky Fire on the Mountain. Brent adds counterpoint piano riffs in the jam foreshadowing his pulling out the Never Trust a Woman leading into rhythm devils. No, the tape speed isn't off for the Eyes of the World, which was played at typical 1984 breakneck speed. The Morning Dew came out of space a bit unexpectedly as they had already played it twice this tour, the most recent only four shows prior. Jerry's vocals are sweet even at the end screaming section. I always dug it when Baby Blue was the encore selection, and this ushered us out into the streets of Providence, looking forward to one more show in that interesting old New England city.
