the Tour story:
After meeting all the Mainers the previous night I was almost talking with that damn accent all day! Providence is the town the Dead play almost as much as Boston, so these New England heads considered it a home show. Tom, Greg and Chris had a great crew of friends and many of them were deadicated types, regaling us with stories of the Lewiston Maine Mothers day show in September 1980 and such. Tickets were tough to come by for this Friday show and you could sense the crowd this night was going to be much larger than the previous night by standing around outside the venue watching the pre-show festivities build up toward time to get in line.

At start of set 1 you can hear a taper with a heavy New York accent who must have been patched out of us asking if we can get the stand higher. Our inexpensive light stand at the time only went up 6 feet. He asked again before Row Jimmy.
Alabama Getaway was of course given opener treatment, lots of EQ adjusting with Healy getting things right for us.
Incredibly long 11 song first set for 1984. Throwing in a short Direwolf heading toward a very long Row Jimmy led by Jerry's soloing. They seemed to be in a good mood, playing lots of classic Americana Dead tunes.

Second set pre drums had the most unusual combination with China Doll > High Time sandwiched between Playin' and Women are Smarter. This was maybe the only time they ever played those two tunes in that combination, according to Deadbase statistics. On top of that, they only played High Time twice in 1984. The transition into High Time was met with an approving "Alright Jerry" by our patcher with the NY accent! The Women Are Smarter got the pre-drums treatment, Bobby jammed out doing his faux whisper, going with the crowd singing with him shtick at the end. An animated drums led to a meandering space winding up inside the Wheel, which was my post drums highlight. The rest was typical Grateful Dead fare ending with a Touch of Grey to send us out the door knowing there are only two more shows on this East Coast tour. Destination- Long Island's famed Nassau Coliseum!
