The tour story:
This is the first show ever recorded with the Davis AKGc422. Mike and I had to miss this show even though we had tickets, they are still unripped in my collection! Kenny flew up to Chicago (or NYC?) and met Sean and the drove to Alpine Valley's East Troy Wisconsin and did not make a tape of the first night. Sean's recollection is they were at the first show but didn't make it in time to get all the gear inside. We had spent a fair amount of time purchasing the microphone and had not had much time to test it at home so they arrived having never dealt with things such as the AKG B18 external power supplies for the mics (we were used to dynamic mics which do not require external power). The set-up was unusual and the typical Alpine Valley crowd was a bit lively around the mic but he and Kenny made the tape, which for a first time out with a fancy microphone isn't an awful AUD, but it is safe to say, not the finest one the Executive Crew ever made. ;-)

Musically this show featured a short, less than 60 minute, first set with an unusual "One More Saturday Night" set closer. Walkin' Blues, the old Robert Johnson/Son House tune which Bob was bringing back in 1985, had it's fourth ever playing by the GD and was soon to become a regular first set offering. The first set highlight for this listener is the Cassidy, Brown Eyed Women pairing,

Second set opened with "Keep On Growing" another new for this tour tune sung by Phil Lesh with the band as chorus. [Ed note: this Eric Clapton song released on the Derek & the Dominoes "Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs" album was only played four times by the GD]. The cover songs kept coming with "Dear Mr. Fantasy" emerging out of Space featuring Brent's lamenting vocals and a spirited reading by the band [Jerry on second verse vocals]. Jerry kicked out a sweet Brokedown Palace with tour starting voice clear and sweet.
