The tour story:
Tom, Mike, and Sean were at this show, we are not sure if Kenny was there. My car had to go back to DFW the day before from OKC, and I was to pick up Fran (and ?? ) to drive up to Colorado to meet everyone in Golden at our usual Days Inn. The drive from OKC to KC is not terrible so those guys were there with plenty of time to spare. The Starlight is a cool venue located in a large city park, Swopes Park in a wooded area of town. It held only about 8,500 people in 1985, and was a thoroughly outdoor space with no roof. The views and the acoustics of this venue were beautiful.

What a show setlist wise, short set times aside. The TLEO, Direwolf, Cassidy & Big RR Blues are standouts. I read a lot of critiques which claim the Cryptical > Other One > Cryptical was too short, not as good as the Greeks from June, etc. All I can say is back then, having seen all the other shows on this leg of their tour; I saw the setlist, heard this tape and truly wished I had been there in KC instead of Houston, for instance. The sound quality of this and most of the audience tapes from this show/venue is very good. Healy had it really dialed in with some excellent bouncy bass.

set 2- At the end of "Eyes of the World" Jerry just stormed offstage, so Brent gave the keys a shake so the drummers led him into "Don't Need Love".  Listening back years later this appears to be an excellent version of the tune. Brent had the vocal growl and you can feel his emotion with lyrics like, "I try to make it work, Try and Try and Try to make you work... love gets you nowhere slow". Garcia took the post drums by the tail with the "Nobody's Fault but Mine". Then the band delivered a 25 minute segue jam, which by the time they got to "Turn On Your Lovelight" left the stage smoldering. During Lovelight Bobby starts the rap portion with: "Sometimes you get up here and you just don't know what to say"! They wrapped up this short but intensely played set with an "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" encore. I would bet that seconds after the band left stage the road crew was humping fast to get the front line and rest of the gear packed down and on the trucks to Red Rocks.
